Hearing the spirits and  the Spirit

God’s ideas are spelled out in the Bible and are revealed in our spirits. Nothing can replace prayer time and times of meditation. Learning to quietly sit and just think on the Lord helps us to differentiate between us speaking in our minds and the Spirit of God speaking to our spirit, which speaks to our minds. The disciple must know the voice of his Commanding Officer.

    1) Our spirit’s voice (inward voice or inside witness) is not loud or even commanding in nature. Our spirit’s voice has authority and comes as completed thought, not usually a string of words. Often, as my mind is reeling through details, my spirit waits for a pause and eases in a message. Sometimes it’s a different subject or an answer to a prayer that was days old. Sometimes it registers an idea from God that is bigger than my own thoughts.

There are ideas, revelations, truths that register on our spirits at selective times. These are often called “Rhema words” – living, spoken words that burst forth onto our minds from our spirits. These happen in prayer, praise, worship, and reading the Bible, or in sermons or songs. They get our attention from the inside of our hearts. Sometimes it is just a “knowing.”

**There are no premonitions, intuitions or psychic events
but only spiritual episodes that are birthed in our spirits or by God and you know who else (demons).

Throughout this next section, please note: lower case “s” in spirit denotes the human spirit, while capital “S” in Spirit identifies the Spirit of God.

“We are spirits that live in a body and have living souls,” as Brother Hagin so aptly puts it. Our inner man (spirit) speaks to us, so we need to develop our listening skills. The soul is our will, personality, intellectual mind and our emotions. The soul is earthy, carnal, and opposes both the human spirit and the Holy Spirit. The soul can only be spiritual when it is dominated by a spirit that is ‘in tune’ with God’s Word and His Voice. From God’s Word and God’s voice there come messages.

Becoming a renewed mind and a Spirit-filled believer is to become an inward spirit listener. The message may be new, old, profound, or truly simple. Our spirits know way more than our souls. This is the part of man that is most easily in touch with the ‘spirit realm’. In error we have called it the subconscious, the super-conscious, psychic, deeper self, Christ consciousness, etc. It is the inner-man, the hidden man of the heart, the spirit, true self and man’s message center.

Though the message is not loud, it has authority, a ring of truth that demands focus and gives comfort if we listen to our spirit. This is the human spirit acting upon the mind.

(Notes from Friday’s class in relation to the above passage: It is also called our inner witness. Children of God are led by the Spirit of God. There is no such thing as female intuition, we are brought up with that erroneous conception, but it is really the woman’s spirit speaking to her mind. To truly hear from God we have to be under submission, a relationship with the Lord. And to make sure that you are hearing right, it is also important to check things out with your spiritual advisor (pastor, elder, teacher), to make sure that you are hearing correctly. What the Lord most desires from us is relationship with Him.)

    2. When the Spirit of God (Voice of God) speaks, He can be more dramatic and speak aloud to the whole being. This is rare and a very special event, which we cannot cause to happen: a supernatural God interrupting our natural day or night activities. This may occur by God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit or an agent – an angel of the above. This voice is very audible to the human ear. Others may hear a sound or rumble but only those intended to hear will clearly know what was said.
For example: God speaking on Mt. Sinai and the Mount of Transfiguration.

(My notes from Friday’s class: This is very rare. In the Old Testament there was usually an urgency to the situation, or a person was in error. What God most wants today is to speak through the Holy Spirit within us. Usually when a voice is audible we are really missing the mark.)

    3. The Godhead or agent may speak but the voice is not naturally audible, it is spiritual. This voice registers upon our mind and spirit at the same instant- very dramatic, authoritative, attention grabbing, then inspiring and peaceful. This voice is God speaking to the inner man and mind of man but not the ear of man. “And the voice of the Lord came to me saying…”

(Notes from Friday’s class: this voice registers in you and feels audible, but no one else hears).

    4) God or His agent speaks or has spoken in our spirit, our spirit tells or retells the message to our mind. This is often by dreams, visions, and revelations. The mind is being reminded of what the spirits have exchanged or talked about.  It can be instantaneous or delayed, as during prophecy, Tongues, interpretations, preaching, teaching, healing or during any anointed time of ministry. The Spirit speaks and leads. Our spirit follows and the mind plays catch up.

To summarize: 1) Man’s spirit speaks to man’s mind – this voice is our own spirit speaking to our own mind. If we are born again, filled with God’ Spirit, then our spirit has in it the Words of God and the thoughts of God. Therefore we are regenerated and can trust what our spirit tells us. Also, we can and should allow this voice to dominate and lead us. Not the emotions (flesh) or our minds, but our spirit (the inner man.) 2. God speaks to man audibly, 3) God speaks to man in his spirit and mind, and 4) God speaks to man’s spirit, which speaks to man’s mind.

We must learn how to hear our spirit and yield our will to our reborn spirit. We use words like “feel, instinct, premonition, vibes, voices” – these are all wrong, for it is a present knowing of an inner thought that registers on the person and is interpreted in the mind and translated into a thought or sentence.

Finally, God is God and can speak to us any time and any way He chooses. We can hear from our spirit’s voice any time if we take the time to listen.

**”The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD,
searching all the inward parts of the belly” (Prov. 20:27)

Have you heard from your inner man lately?

Usually when a voice is audible we are really missing the mark.)

Man’s spirit speaks to man’s mind – this voice is our own spirit speaking to our own mind.
i am trying to understand this one because when my mind has a thougth i can hear my voice inside but when GOD is speaking to me or the Holy spirit its not my voice inside its diffrent
GONNA HAVE TO CHEW ON THIS ONE abit
as i feel i know the diffrents between a satan thougth my thought and a GOD thougth.
I know the diffrents between A GOD dream pizza dream and a demonic dream
I know the diffrents with hearing an audible voice of the lord
    every persons experirence is diffrent.

  • Gonna have to come ack and read this when the football fans aren’t screaming in my ears! LOL

    How are you doing?

  • Interesting posts on your site.  I was reading bstoker´s site and saw your comment about liking to see how people study scripture deeply.  I come from a chrismatic, non-denominational church, and am always interested to run across people who don´t think what I believe is beyond the bounds of Biblical truth.  However, one thing our church is blessed with is a pastor who doesn´t let us get so caught up in the gifts and their manifestations that we move off the path laid out by Scripture.  I have found when evaluating what I think I hear from God that checking if it lines up with Scriptural truth and what I have learned to be the heart of God, that is the salvation and restoration of souls for His glory, is a good guide.  However, just because you have seen God´s heart for a person or situation, that doesn´t mean that choices will not be made that will carry the people involved away from that perfect plan.  If you are interested in seeing how I study the word using poetry, come visit my site and look back through my posts.

  • RYC Dear Healing Touches, I am hoping you read the following in the above passage from what Pastor Don wrote:

“Finally, God is God and can speak to us any time and any way He chooses. We can hear from our spirit’s voice any time if we take the time to listen.”

I was sharing what was given to me in Bible study and from the Discipleship textbook, I cannot presume to judge another’s visions, prophesies or hearing from God. What is important is if it is held up to the most important measuring rod of all, God’s Word. If it matches up with the whole of scripture, then it is from God.

Having had a background in the occult (see my testimony of October 7, 2005) I know that I ascribed to many things in the occult that sounded very holy and pure and good. It was only after I started learning more about the Word of God that I began to see that often they were off just a shade. And that shade made it untrue.

satan is a deceiver and can masquerade as an angel of light. There is an awesome book entitled THE BEAUTIFUL SIDE OF EVIL. It is well worth reading.

I never mean my posts to sound condemning to anyone, and I write what stirs my heart.

Myrrhlyz, you are right, sometimes we see something for a person, but it is not the time to tell them, and it is not even for sharing, but perhaps for praying for the person. Each person must come to God on their own. In our discipleship class right now we are learning about signs and wonders, but that is just a small segment of the whole program which includes servanthood, studying the scripture, prayer, obedience, salvation and many other topics. Often on this site I share what I have learned in my Bible study after the class, sharing my notes. Probably if you page through other sections of this blog you will find many other subjects. Ours is a Bible based, Bible believing and Bible obeying church. I am rather newly saved, so am sharing what I learn, but will not pretend that I take perfect notes.

  • hi, i wanted you to know that i updated creaky-knees to include your updates. i started to get around to folks sites this week, but was constantly interrupted by some major events here. being old, i’ve lost track of where i was, a few days have passed again and i’m starting over.  (i really dislike this….i want to remain dedicated to my purpose/god’s purpose in the prayer ring) anyway, when life and duty call, i’m off the puter for a bit.  it’s been an unsettling week for me for many reasons….i hope this week will be calmer….trust that the lord is using you and blessing you and your family…..<3 bette

  • Hey Heather

  • That was very interesting and i am going to read it after my company leaves and meditate on it more. Buy one thing that always helps me to know His voice……He never Drives us and never yells at us, as he is a Gentle, loving , and PEACEFUL Father. and yes Jesus said ,,,,My sheep know my Voice and a Stranger they will not listen to or follow.  The enemy of our souls is the one that tries to ….Drive us, and Our Father  gently  Leads us and Guides us By His  Spirit…………..when God is speaking to us , He  always speaks to us where we can understand, and He don’t ever cause Anxiety or confusion……. He is Awesome and just to think about this is amazing , that He is inside of us, and He listens to our every word and  He really does care more than we could ever imagine………simply me ….Marie

  • a general announcement for all blogring members:

Creaky-Kneed prayer warriors now has it’s own site.  you can reach me at either my ‘regular’ one, or there.  I’ts gotten ‘too big’ on it’s own, so i’m trying to separate the two and see how this goes.  tho i am not ‘mega-minded’ about it, just felt that some of the serious and personal things presented, needed some sincere attention and an environment of comfort away from the normal daily fare.  we’ll see how this goes. hope you’ll join me there as well!  <3 bette (bboop)  i am blessed by your caring and participation for God’s glory!

  • And so I send good thoughts your way — peace & warmth to fill the voids. ((HUGE HUGS))

Know you are worthy & beautiful.

    Believe it.

    xo

  • Hi just wanted to say hello…it seems like its been a while since i commented to you. There is a hard wall around us often times to prevent us from hearing the voice of the Lord. Sometimes just the hectic noise of the day, maintenance of life, can keep us from hearing Gods voice. May we always stay sensative to His still small voice. The Lord bless and keep you strong and safe….yer ol bro..)m(

  • Just stopping by to say hello!!! I really enjoyed reading this post.

    love ya…..

  • Excellent post. I have heard the Godhead voice (it is rare, but has happened more than once to me), although most of the time He speaks to me in the Spirit. I know His voice and I long to hear Him; sometimes when I pray I just listen and listen… there is nothing like it.
