  • Mark 8, the feeding of the 4,000 follows after the feeding of the 5,000 (Mark 6)

There are baskets mentioned in each section, but the word for basket is different.

In Mark 6 the word is Strongs 2894 Kophinos which is a small basket, kind of like a picnic basket. And the people Jesus fed were Jewish.

In Mark 8, based on where the feeding took place, there were many gentiles there, and that may have explained the question of Jesus satisfying them, and the basket there is 4711 Spuris – which is a large flexible basket, kind of like a hamper.

And it was suggested in the teaching I heard that these two feedings parallels what happened with Jesus’ ministry. He came to minister to the Jews first. Which is where Jesus spent most of his ministry, but later the gospel would be given to the gentiles. So when Jesus fed a crowd that included gentiles that would have been an illustration of this spread of the bread of life (the Word).

I don’t know if I am saying this clearly, but I do find it interesting the difference in basket sizes. Shows the abundance.

Then, Jesus got into the boat and told the disciples to be wary of the leaven of the scribes and pharisees, and the disciples felt he was stating that they forgot to bring bread (but that was kind of silly given the fact that Jesus had already fed so many with so few offerings.

  • Wow that is really neat.  How beautiful are the hidden little things in the Bible.

I hope your day today has some peace and joy in it.  I am out doing some pre 18th birthday goffing off with Alisha.  :)

  • Hi Heather,

That is interesting how the disciples worried about forgetting bread after experiencing the miracles of the multitudes fed.  Isn’t that just like us to stress on our lives after witnessing miracles.  Thank you for your post’s.  God bless you!!!

    Love Lisa

  • Sometimes I think “those silly, dense disciples!” Then I remember that I am just as silly and dense!

  • as for all those quizes, they are kinda fun, and they do have different perspectives/focuses/viewpoints from which they base their findings on. for an acurate personality quiz, try meyer briggs (spelling) and jung. mine is posted earlier on in another post of mine. went to dallas theoligical seminary where the test was used regularly by minirth-mier.

  • You’re right in your comment on how it would be nice to have a break.  I do believe He gives them to you, in His time of course.  He gave me one that lasted for about 6 months and for a while I thought something was wrong with me.  I was getting really depressed until a friend pointed out that sometimes we’re in growth mode and we grow and grow.  And sometimes we’re in maintenance mode and that’s when we just get our cup filled back up again.  (That made me feel so much better.)  I can see now that I’m going back into the growth mode and I am so ready and loving every minute of it!

Btw, that is really neat about the baskets.  I never realized they were different sizes… hmmm…

  • There’s numerology involved here, too… see this post.  I think you’d be interested in it.

  • Dear Anna, Thanks for that, if anyone is interested in the baskets, this is a great extension.

To all who are praying for me.

I want to thake you for your Bible verses and prayers. This is a tough time but there is one good thing in the midst of it, I am really trying to hold to a confession of faith in the midst of this instead of running. It is hard and I am poised to run, but am trying to stand still at least.

I care for all of you and it is so comforting to know that people are so loving.

    Heather
