  • Do Not Worry by Pastor Don

I love it when there is a God Stop – as Beth Moore calls it in my life. Savoring The Observable Presence of God. On Friday driving to church for Bible study a bunch of worries came up in my mind and I was banishing them, telling myself that God had not given me a spirit of fear. I proceeded to hand them over to God, and tell myself that I was not going to be sidetracked by worry. I get to Bible study and Pastor Don, who had already prepared a handout in preparation for teaching us stuff from Revelation, told us that first he was going to deal with something that came up in his spirit, something he had just talked with our church secretary about – WORRY. Well, the whole Bible study was on this. Not only did God help me with my worries, but it pleases me no end to know that my pastor is willing to give up his planned study to go where God leads him to teach. I am so very, very blessed!

Pastor Don pointed out that in this day and age the number of things to be concerned about has multiplied. There is so much turmoil, gang violence (even in our neck of the woods), depression of the dollar, the removal of our power as a nation, the increase in natural disasters, and a general spirit of lawlessness. It is increasingly hard for families to survive on one income, and Middle America does not exist anymore. We can see evidence at the gas pump of how our economy is faring. The devil is waging an onslaught against family and marriage. Commitment does not have the same meaning as it had, for now people are committed as long as it pleases them, it is not for life. What does Jesus say about worry?

Matthew 6:25-34 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble”

Pastor Don told us that Jesus is the one who tells us not to worry- we have to assume that Jesus will not ask us to do something we cannot do. So many give an excuse for worrying like, “I can’t help it.” or “It’s just the way I am.” God, Jesus, the Father of Life will not tell us to do something that we really can’t do. We can assume that if God has told us to do something, it is something that He created us to be able to do. With a mandate from God to not worry, we can assume that it is possible not to worry.

Don’t believe our excuses, obey the command of the Lord.

    How do we not worry?

Pastor Don said something that he said might sound harsh to us. But in reality, so often the things we pick to worry about are insignificant to some of the real concerns of people around us. One of our members is in the hospital facing another brain operation for an aneurism, and has been given 48 hours to see if there is a chance for recovery. When we compare ourselves to a situation like that, are our worries as big? If we look we will find that there are people who have far worse situations than we have, and also people who are worried about things that seem far less troublesome than our concerns. We need to begin to formulate a wider perspective. When we do, we will be better able to deal with our stress.

Verse 25 includes all the things that we can be concerned about with our life, what we will eat, drink, put on. Jesus assured us that the birds of the air did not plant, reap, or sow, but God took care of them. The birds did not have an IRA account. Pastor Don is not saying that we don’t work, plan for the future, or prepare, but we do have to trust that God will take care of us and not get stressed out. God is not wanting us to lose sleep, bite our nails, or make emotionally charged contingency plans for things that worry us.

We are all guilty of worry. That being said, God is not saying to not be concerned or plan, just don’t be worried. Worrying won’t change a thing, the only way change will come is if we do something about what we are worrying about.

Verse 28 does not apply so much to us here in this country, for everyone has access to clothes – even if it is good will or a shelter’s handing out of clothes. But in Jesus’ time people did not have a ton of clothes in their closets, just a few outfits. Pastor Don told us that in third world countries there are people where this is a real concern. He talked about India where people would come to church in their one good outfit.

Pastor Don also told us that if we would just apply a little faith to what we are worried about, we wouldn’t need to worry. We need faith to believe, and faith is applicable when we are struggling with things we don’t believe will happen. Have faith for a good marriage when your marriage is tested. Have faith that God will provide when your income says otherwise.

Notice in Verse 31 it says, “Do not worry SAYING”. The problem is that at times we think of the things we are worrying about, and then end up speaking what we are worried about. The key is to not SAY what you are worrying about, to not SPEAK it into existence. What you say gives life to what you are saying. It makes the worry more real for you. Puts you behind the eight ball. It is ok to be worried, for we do deal in realities, but we have to stop and be constructive in how we speak about our worry. Don’t go on and on and on and on about the problem. Speak the solution.

Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Not only does faith come by hearing, but so does doubt and unbelief. The difference is we excuse the negative. We validate as real only one aspect of reality, what we can see. But we need to realize that there is a reality that is far greater than what we can perceive with our senses. Everything God made was made from the unseen – He caused the unseen to become seen. So what we see is not greater than what we don’t see. If we permit unabated whining we would all be in bad shape. After you state what is going on in your life, if you keep complaining then you are whining. State the reality, but then watch what you speak after that. State the reality but then add, BUT GOD….

We are creatures of habit, we have bad habits. When you say something over and over you multiply your worry. Most people who worry don’t realize that they are worrying. They do not stop and ask themselves what they are feeling and saying. They just do it. They put themselves in torment month after month, not discerning that they are doing so, they are just in automatic worry mode.

Sometimes we just do not discern who we are, we are just in park or neutral. We say to ourselves things that put us into a stressful situation. Eventually we get used to that stressful situation and think it is normal. Sort of like putting a frog into cool water, and turning the heat on – the frog will not discern the gradual increase of temperature until it is too late.

Every decision you make has pressure. It impacts your life in many areas. If you perceive yourself being stuck in circumstances, trust the people close to you to give you input. Ask them, “am I worried?” “am I blowing this out of proportion?” Get out of denial. There is nothing wrong with admitting that you are under worry or stress, just don’t do anything terminal. Do an evaluation, find out what category your worry or stress is. Is it fifth stage cancer or what am I going to wear to a function? Get your problem into perspective.

When King David lost a child, beforehand he mourned, fasted, prayed, cried. After the child died, he knew that he couldn’t bring his child to life, so he left his mourning clothes sure in the knowledge that he would go to the child in the future, but that he had to pick up and deal with other problems.

Sometimes worry is a way of focusing attention to yourself, a prideful thing, or selfishness. If you want attention, you talk about what is worrying you. Pride implies that what you are going through no one else can understand or handle.

We get fearful when life seems to be overpowering us, and we get afraid, thinking that much talk will solve the problems. Sometimes we can get constructive help talking with others, other times the responses serve to dig us deeper into the problem. Pride can also keep us from getting help when we really need help. But if we seek someone to help us, we have to discern who we are asking to help us. Are they at a point where they can help us?

We also need to ask ourselves, how much will this problem matter 100 years from now. Pastor Don calls this REDUCTION – reducing our problems to their proper level. 1 Peter tells us to cast our cares upon the Lord, for He cares about us.

We need to look at our situation through the eyes of the Father. What can faith say about this problem? What are my possibilities? Come up with plans and solutions. Never plan to stay exactly where you are. A bad prayer would be to ask God to help you have the strength to stay where you are. Pray for change, your change, the people around you to change, your circumstances to change. Throw the problem on Jesus and ask Him to help you solve it.

Once you cast your care upon the Lord, don’t reel it back in, throw it over and leave it. If it comes back to you, cast it further away to the Lord. Keep throwing it until it doesn’t come back.

James 4:7-8 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Blessed be the Lord who daily bears our burdens.

    Hoping your day is blessed.

  • Heather,

Thanks for coming by my site but I have to disagree with what you say about the Catholics. My family grew up Catholic and I know first hand one they believe that they must keep the sacraments to be saved, number two they worship Mary as a Co Redeemer, number three the pope now has said anyone outside the Catholic church is not going to heaven. They also believe that they recieve Christ everytime they take the wafer and the wine.  So with all due respect I know first hand what I am talking about.  My grandmother is roasting in Hell because she thought she was good enough and I have a 90 year grandfather been catholic all his life and believe as long as he prays and goes to confession every day that God will let him into heaven.  So please don’t believe what all those people on Tbn say Catholics do not believe Jesus is the way to heaven. I would have never left a message but when you say I am wrong I would to say I know first hand that most catholics belong to a cult, can they be saved sure but most never turn from the Catholic church. God bless you.

  • Preachers Pulpit my husband is Catholic as are my children, I too attend Mass and had at one time converted - but I also know that while there is error in doctrine that Catholics and my husband and children do believe Jesus is Lord. There are saved Catholics. My heart is with the non-denominational, Charismatic church that I attend as much as possible and I am saved, but I will not put a stumbling block in front of my husband or anyone else by how I speak about Catholics. I think it is presumptuous to think that your grandmother is roasting in Hell – we do not know what her relationship is with God. I dare say that God is the one to judge a person’s heart. I think God may be harsher on the priests than on the congregants, and I know that God is just in His judgments. But I do know that there are many Catholics who have a relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and I doubt that any denominational church that is non-Catholic has all of doctrine correct. There are also many non-Catholic churches that also are into works, although they call it by other names. Perhaps if you want to reach someone who is Catholic a different approach needs to be taken. My sister-in-law used to give my husband tracts like, “If you are Catholic you are going to Hell.” Well he mocked those, and just hardened his heart against that. When I got saved I asked my pastor what should I do. He told me to go to Mass with my husband and let my life be a testimony. To not speak against my husband or his faith, just model Christianity. The fruit of that is that now he sits under the teachings of Pastor Don, is looking at some of the doctrine of the Catholic church and measuring it against the Bible, has said the sinner’s prayer, and is teaching my children as their spiritual head. He respects the Bible knowledge I have, and is seeking more in the Bible. I know it is a matter of time before he is able to step away from false doctrine – but he is doing it because of the infilling of the Word of God, and because I did not put a stumbling block in his path. Not only that, but by my being at church I can also temper what is taught that is in error by loving comments. Perhaps prayer for unsaved ones and a different tone would bear more fruit. God bless you too.

  • Heather,

We will just leave where we are. Thanks for commenting back we will let God judge those in different denominations.  Thanks for coming my way and reading my comments. I pray you continue to get a blessing from them.

  • Heather, I had one of those weeks last week…God’s presence popping up and His voice speaking to me every time I turned around, it seemed. It’s a great feeling to recognize God prompting us — to have our “listening ears” on, and see His guiding hand on us

  • Good Morning Heather. I thought you site was a tranquill, quiet, peaceful place. I am supposed to be the trouble maker. lol I am part of what my Catholic Christian friends call their separated breathern. I have had many Catholics quizz me and they all think I am going to heaven. To keep from getting too much pride ( I do have just a little, tiny tad of it–hardly noticable) I have had 2 people telll me that they won’t visit my Xanga site anymore because of the content. I did delete the content, and I think I did go to far. It seems that the conservative Christians have a little trouble with me, but most who visit are very nice to this old guy hoping to reach 75 in good health. It seems like only yesterday that I was 17 and saw the mosts beautiful girl in the universe. I married her.

RYC  LOL—Wait a mintue—I always need prayer!! Just ask my wife!!!

About Dan’s teaching on worry. That was a good one about our family. We all agree now in our advancing ages (kids included) that our family focuse on FEAR. We see things to fear (same as worry?) all the time. My wife has a phobia. As soon as we back out of the driveway, the questions come. ‘Did you see the garage door go down? Is the bathroom light on? Did you noitice that the stove is off.’ This is one kind of worry, but it is probably a personality disorder.

Then we used to watch the news. That mad us worry.  Then there were personal circumstances. The emphasis was always find something to fear. It is a sin. I am trying to lead our marriage out of fear, but since you visit my site a lot, I cannot lie! lol  I am trying to move away from fear and worry. Dan gave us a really good lesson.

    Blessings

    frank

  • Very important topic!~ NOT to worry. Must be relted to “fear not.” No time…read more in depth later. ANYWAY…i am ok on this, but will use for othrs, for sure.

YES I support you re Catholics, and others. Just to belong to a denomination really isn’t the point. Many people in many groups don’t believe EVERYTHING that the group does. God knows our hearts, and our lives are there so see what we DO…..Who knows? I have so much to take care of with my OWN fallen natures…..becoming purified, to be a worthy “bride of Christ”….. I really don’t have time to worry in that way about others.

How can I encourage? How can I help…that Unique person in front of me? how can I not be like the idols Abraham destroyed? Who had eyes, but did not see? etc? Thank God for GOd and Christ….and all the various saintly ones….

    Including many of you!

    Lots of love

  • How often I need to be reminded to not fear, or worry. In my life those are the tools the enemy uses to destroy my faith and trust in who God is and what He can do. Joel Olsteen is an awesome preacher in reminding me to not worry, but trust God and to speak His blessings over me. Blessings..Vel

  • Well Heather, This entry hits the nail on the head for me.  : )

So glad your pastor is willing to obey the Holy Spirit.

Loved the acronym by Beth Moore too.  I will be emailing this entry to myself.  I am like a yo-yo.  I throw it to God and take it back, throw it to God and take it back!  lol   I was telling my husband it’s as if I can hardly help it sometimes.  I should know better.

    Hugs to you,  ~Amelia  : )

  • Good thoughts. Thanks for sharing!

  • What an interesting collection of responses to your faithful postings.  I’ve been away, but subscribe to your Xanga site. .. .and lo and behold you showed up.  Blessings. . . ! Keep Him in Focus and the rest seems insignificant.  What He says, we know for sure.  What man says, we may test and try.  He will teach us everything necessary for life and godliness — all because we diligently seek Him first above all else. . . and obey every detail of His Word.  Any moment now we may be face to face with our glorious Lord. . . for all eternity. Worry?  Who?  Me?

  • Hey thanks for commenting on my site. I’ve been doing a little better since i wrote that blog. I’m really learning how to be dependent on God because of it. I came to your site because i did a search on xanga for christians in richmond…somehow you came up. I’m looking for friends, mainly female, here because there aren’t many godly young people around here. But i go to an amazing church that has alot of older people that disciple me, and to me that’s more important than having people to hang out with. Anyway, I like your post it seems to be the thing i keep hearing. Hmmm I wonder if God’s trying to tell me something…hehe. Thanks for the comment.

  • WOW! You must live in an area with a lot of problems: “There is so much turmoil, gang violence (even in our neck of the woods), depression of the dollar, the removal of our power as a nation, the increase in natural disasters, and a general spirit of lawlessness. It is increasingly hard for families to survive on one income, and Middle America does not exist anymore. We can see evidence at the gas pump of how our economy is faring. The devil is waging an onslaught against family and marriage. Commitment does not have the same meaning as it had, for now people are committed as long as it pleases them, it is not for life.”

I have heard these kinds of statements before and did a little bit of investigating. What I found out was that actually gang violence is way down compared to the 1880s and even just a few years ago. The dollar is faring well right now, people worldwide still want to come here rather than anywhere else to live (illegally or legally), natural disasters in fact have decreased, we just hear about them faster because of the media. Lawlessness is better than found in other areas of the world and other eras or times of history like early Colonial America, England in the 16th and 17th Centuries, or Paul’s day and age where anyone at anytime could be enslaved, killed, or disappear and there was no one to turn to for help. My wife and I counsel young marrieds to live on one income all the time, and many do without any problems. Usually it is spending habits that make us have to live with two incomes. And while there are problems with marriage vs. living together there are some great strides occurring right now whereby local churches across the USA are banding together to offer marriage counseling and help. In most areas where this has occurred, divorce has dropped 15-20%! In fact, more young people are looking for deeper commitment in marriage than ever before in the past decade! I have come to believe that the problem is not so much with society, the problem is with the church and Christians. If we were truly being the “salt and light” we are supposed to be, many of the “problems” we see, would disappear or be negligible.

What is your view of God? Is He omnipotent (all powerful), omnipresence (everywhere), and omniscient (all wise or all knowing) or not? Isn’t He always holy, loving, hates sin, just, in control, eternal, and merciful? If you answered “no” to any of these, your view of God is skewed, but if you answered “yes,” then stop worrying! God is powerful and in control! Believers have no reason to be overly concerned about anything except following God daily. Now, I know we need to be involved in our world to make it a better place until Jesus returns, but we are not to worry about things we have no influence or control over. We are to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” We try to blame Satan for things we are guilty of and forget he is just a created being that is very limited in power and scope, especially where believers are concerned. In fact, the Bible teaches us that he has to ask permission of God to affect the lives of anyone, even the unsaved! Why? He is a limited created being and God is not! When we have Christ, we have the power behind the throne in our lives. This is why Jesus said that His followers did not need to worry. If the grass, birds, and the flowers of the field depend on God easily, we who know better should as well!

Just my meanderings on the subject. God bless and stop worrying!

  • Pastor Blaster, yes God is IN CONTROL. I know that, and I know that worry is something He tells us not to do. But at the same time, He also has commanded us to know the signs of the times – to see which way the winds are blowing. Jesus gave us in Matthew 24 & 25 a picture of what is coming. We are fools if we are not aware of where we are in the prophetic scheme of things. To be aware of what is going on and to make sure that we are fully armed with all that God has given us is the wise choice. I plan to be with the five virgins who have their oil and wicks trimmed, who have brought extra oil. Satan is a created being and is limited in power, but in the end days, realizing his days are numbered he is going to attack the saints – we see pastors being caught up in sins, we see people succumbing to earthly, fleshly things. Not all Christians are keeping God as their first focus – many are vacillating with the Word of God. We are told to wear the WHOLE armor of God – if we leave a piece of it off satan will throw one of those fiery darts at the vulnerable spot – and God just may let him sift us. There are many who did good works in Jesus’ name that, in one of his parables, Jesus says they will say, Lord I healed in your name I did this in your name, and Jesus will tell them I never knew you. God gave us tools, He gave us spiritual gifts, He gave us the full armor, He uses us (same as He used Moses, Joshua, and all who chose to obey Him). His will will prevail but I want to be used by Him. I will not be caught unprepared, and I want to be as fully equipped as possible. I think that there are some churches who are not fully equipping their members, and when times get tough it will be harder on them. I also know that if those birds in the field did not go out after those worms, or look for the seeds – if they just sat on the tree branch waiting for the worms and seeds to come to them they would starve and die.

    Heather

  • You are already one of the five virgins if you have believed in Christ. This was an example of Jesus for people of His day to come to faith in Him as the Messiah. And yes we do need to be watchful, but not senseless. The full amour is put on as we walk in Christ. Take a look again at what Paul wrote about each piece. WE often think that as a believe we have to mentally or “spiritually” put each of these pieces on, yet each piece is already “on” if you are walking with Jesus. The example of those who say, Lord, lord did I not do…” is an example of non-believing people, like the Hebrews of Jesus’ day who thought they knew all about God, but did not believe in Jesus, it has nothing to do with Christians who have placed their faith and trust in Christ. If God is omnipotent (all powerful), omnipresence (everywhere), and omniscient (all wise or all knowing), always holy, loving, hates sin, just, in control, eternal, and merciful — you as a believer have nothing to fear! God is powerful and in control! Believers have no reason to be overly concerned about anything except following and walking with God daily.

Too many Christians in our day and age walk in constant fear of losing something by not confessing this or that or wondering constantly if they are “good” enough for God. Grace either is grace or it isn’t. Sadly, too many are taught that God’s grace is not quite sufficient. They would vocally say “no way! but their insecure actions, weak spiritual attitudes, and what they are taught says otherwise. Paul would sing, “Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12 NIV) If Paul could trust God through Jesus, I can as well. Trying to have special added “power” when Christians already have all they need through the Holy Spirit that lives in them when they first believed, is living a pillar to post kind of faith. This is why Paul would go on to write: “Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you — guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. (v. 14)” You guard it not in fear, but in faith of an all powerful God who keeps His children. (John 14:18; John 1:12-13; John 10:27-30) After all He promised to never leave us nor forsake us! (Hebrews 13:5) Why else could Jesus boldly tell us: “Do not worry!”

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31) There it is! All anyone needs to have a strong faith walk: If you believe in Jesus and live for Him, you have NOTHING to fear! God bless!
