  • Gideon, Judges 8 by Pastor Don

Pastor Don began the Bible study by pointing out that the fruit produced will depend on the seed planted. Negative seed produces negative fruit. We can’t get a positive seed from negative fruit.

My teenagers, because they are off from school were at the Friday afternoon Bible Study and pastor Don started talking to them about strategies for success because he knows my oldest is going off to college.

Pastor Don told us that we minister to the self by our conversation, and if we monitor our self-conversation and thinking we can begin to see that what we plant in our brains is played out in our life. What we say to ourselves will determine how well we do in life. We have to look at our attitudes. To succeed in high school does not mean that you will succeed in college. Without self-drive and self monitoring you will not succeed. Talk will not get the work done and you can fail in college.

The greatest thing we can do is to be teachable, and love is the greatest value we can have. We can’t be anything unless we are being teachable. When you go to college you are not going to learn new subjects, you are going to learn how to learn. Learn how to apply yourself to a difficult subject. With a positive attitude and good application you will do well.

Pastor Don then directed us to Judges 8 so that we could see how things wound up with Gideon.

Gideon was teachable so God could use him. He listened and obeyed the word of God even though the circumstances seemed to imply that such obedience was foolhardy. Gideon did lay out a fleece, and even today the church is still looking for that extra word from God.

The Body of Christ needs a WORD FROM GOD, we don’t need a fleece.

God was patient with Gideon, and he got beyond the fearful stage and won a big battle. When they blew the trumpets the enemy was vanquished.

Politics are important in church at times. Gideon was in a difficult situation. He heard got a God idea to beat the enemy, but vanquishing the enemy caused problems for Gideon.

Pastor Don first took us back to Judges 7:17-20 to get everyone caught up with where we are.

Judges 7:17-20 And he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do: “When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, “The sword of the LORD and of Gideon!” So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers–they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing–and they cried, “The sword of the LORD and of Gideon!”

Remember, God reduced the number of fighting men by a selection process to three hundred, to go against a vast enemy. The rest of Gideon’s fighting men were sent home. In this battle, the winner was the LORD. Pastor Don asked us why these words? And we examined the text and saw in verses 13 & 14 that Gideon sneaked into the enemy camp to overhear what the enemy was saying, and he heard one of the enemy soldiers talking about a dream that he had which he interpreted to be ….verse 14 “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.” God led Gideon to overhear this to give him courage, so that Gideon could take that step of faith insanity. To do what seems illogical, but was a God idea.

Gideon heard a Word of the LORD from the enemy, sometimes we too hear a Word of the Lord from our enemies. Gideon needed to know the mental set of the enemy, then he could line up his faith with God’s plan, and could conquer the enemy God’s way.

To often we judge the vessel who delivers the message, and do not judge the message. Words of wisdom from God can come out of the mouth of a child, an idiot, the enemy, a donkey, your spouse, whoever. On the other hand, a church member can give you a message from the pit of Hell. We have to discern the truth of the message and how it lines up with the Word of God.

In Judges 7:9-11 God tells Gideon to go to the camp so that he can hear what they say. Gideon needed to hear a word from the Lord. Sometimes God speaks to you out of unusual sources. You have to believe that God will speak to you and you will hear a Word from the Lord whether it is an answer to a need, or for God to bring something to our rembrance.

Pastor Don said that the more I humble myself before the LORD the more he reduces the message so that I get it. If I act puffed up and think that I am so smart, God sometimes serves up a word that is so complicated that I have trouble interpreting it. God wants us to approach him with a teachable spirit and in humility, and then we can hear more clearly.

We have to examine our foundations and make sure that they are in line with God’s Word.

Judges 7:21-25 And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled. When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the LORD set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. And the men of Israel gathered together from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites. Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the mountains of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and seized the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan. And they captured two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued Midian and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.

Gideon sent soldiers from the other tribes to rout out the remaining enemy. He won the battle and the enemy scattered. Gideon knew where the enemy was going, they would go to where the water was. He know that an army needs water and Israel is a desert country, so he positioned the other men by the wells so when the enemy scattered because of the 300, there were soldiers at the wells to take care of the stragglers. Then Gideon was able to win against the 120,000 that had come against Israel.

Pastor Don pointed out that there is a spiritual message there, at our watering holes, where we hear and learn about the Word of God, is where we need to meet the enemy. The Word of God is the water. Remember how Moses met the enemy at the water. That is the blessing of Bible Study, as we learn the Word, we learn how to beat the enemy. At the same time, where we are being fed the Word of God, the enemy is going to try and come in and poison the water, so we have to be discerning and beat back the enemy. We need to stand on good, solid Bible doctrine, not stand on visions and dreams that are not supported by the Word of God.

When the enemy tries to sneak back to the watering hole and plant poison, we have to say, “That is not what the Bible says.” You can tell them, “That is heady stuff, but it is not really in the Word.” Not all dreams and visions are from God. Unless they are backed up by God’s Word, they are not accurate. The devil is slick in the way he establishes his lies. He puts in little drops of poison, not flagrant lies.

Here are some of the lies going around the church these days:

    1. The Church has replaced Israel; The Nation of Israel will not be saved; God only causes Jews who are part of the Church to be saved.

We need to know the Word of God, to know the truth, to know what THUS SAYS THE LORD.

The devil tries to cause havoc, lying and telling us that our political view of a situation supersedes scripture. For example, see the poor suffering Palestinians, why can’t the Arabs and the Jews get along together? When we know that the Arabs have no intention of keeping a peace treaty.

    2. Theologically, Israel will be forced into a peace agreement by lies, but the enemy will not keep it, and this agreement will lead to the temporary destruction of Israel. Biblically the outcome will be death in the streets of Israel.

    3. Tolerance – Everyone is pushing for tolerance, which supersedes morality. They are tearing apart parts of the Bible to make us peaceably accept a morality that God does not condone. God does not condone sexual immorality of any sort, from homosexuality to premarital sex to adultery to pornography. If you like the wrong, fine, but do not try to convince the world that wrong is right.

Gideon won the battle, but his victory would be short lived if he did not have a sense of good politics. Remember that only 300 fought with Gideon and won the battle – this was at God’s instructions. Now the men who were sent home were upset. Gideon handled them very politically.

Judges 8:1 Now the men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you done this to us by not calling us when you went to fight with the Midianites?” And they reprimanded him sharply.  They thought Gideon was grandstanding, and were upset.

Judges 8:2 So he said to them, “What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? A very political answer telling them how important their battle was in comparison with Gideon?

Judges 8:3 God has delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. And what was I able to do in comparison with you?” Then their anger toward him subsided when he said that.

The Lord told Gideon what to do. They did not see or accept God’s plan, so they labeled Gideon from their perspective. The Church does this too, not everyone gets the vision for the church. We think truth and integrity will win the day, but if there is a flesh problem in the church, truth and integrity may not win the day. It is an “US” problem, “WE” do not get the whole victory. Gideon did what he did to obey the Word of the LORD. Gideon saw the big picture, but US did not look at the big picture or hear from God. The US part was hurt, thought they were entitled to something that God did not give them. They wanted glory, but the Glory belonged to God. Gideon was able to give an answer that satisfied their egos, and still God got the glory. Church leaders also have to be careful how they share the vision God gives them, and there is politics even in the church.

He could have told the people, “The truth is the LORD spoke to ME, in my integrity. I must tell you the truth, your self-centered focus could have cost us the victory.” That would have hurt the cause of God and Gideon.

Wisdom from God is to be used with truth and integrity. It wasn’t Gideon’s might, it was God’s glory. Gideon gave the credit to God, did not need to take the glory for the victory, so he was able to give an answer that satisfied the egos of those who confronted him. Gideon did not boast in himself. If Gideon had not given this answer the program would have stopped. Love won the day. Love has a higher motive and action than boasting in truth and integrity.

Only when we realize that there is a higher goal than US, can there be a victory of the saints, and the battle can then be fought with truth and integrity.

Politics is in order for the church at times. Telling the people what they need to hear to get the job done, so that they do what God wants them to do. They may not be ready for the whole vision, or what God has shown you for years down the road. God will direct what is to be shared and not shared.

When Moses told the people what to do, he told them what they needed to know. He did not tell them all that God showed him in the mountaintop, just what God told him to tell the people. Pastor Don said that the most frustrating thing for him as a pastor is that God does not give him the whole map. God shows him the next step, and the next step, but not the complete picture.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.

God gives us the next step and we are led by our Spirit to take the next step. When God gives us a step we need to get moving,. God says you follow me, to here, then there. He doesn’t give us the map to show us where the rest stops, the detours, and the troubles are. We just are to follow God.

Pastor Don says that sometimes God has him taking steps, and in the midst, even though Pastor Don isn’t quite sure where God is leading with these steps, he has to put on a face of confidence. He knows that if he truly is a servant of the Lord, God will not give him a map, He will give us a Word to sustain us until the next direction.

People do not always realize what true success is because they do not realize that it is trusting God and taking the next step even when the outcome is uncertain.

    Gideon had administrative skills.

Judges 8:4 When Gideon came to the Jordan, he and the three hundred men who were with him crossed over, exhausted but still in pursuit. They were on their last legs.

Judges 8:5-6 Then he said to the men of Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.” And the leaders of Succoth said, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?”

Oh, Oh, the men of Succoth insulted the Sword of Gideon who was appointed by God.

Judges 8:7 So Gideon said, “For this cause, when the LORD has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers!”  Gideon will keep this promise.

Judges 8:8-9 Then he went up from there to Penuel and spoke to them in the same way. And the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. So he also spoke to the men of Penuel, saying, “When I come back in peace, I will tear down this tower!”

Somebody needs to know, to open their eyes and see where the Hand of God is. To figure that it is not right to mess with these guys, because the Hand of the Lord is upon them.

Judges 8:10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were at Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand, all who were left of all the army of the people of the East; for one hundred and twenty thousand men who drew the sword had fallen.

The three hundred men of Gideon won against 120,000 men. All that were left were the armies of Zebah and Zalmunna.

Judges 8:11 Then Gideon went up by the road of those who dwell in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah; and he attacked the army while the camp felt secure.

Gideon has become the mighty man of God that God prophesied earlier, secure enough to attack a camp that felt secure.

Judges 8: 12-14  When Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and routed the whole army. Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle, from the Ascent of Heres. And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth and interrogated him; and he wrote down for him the leaders of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men.

Even without the help of Succoth and Penuel, Gideon and his men were victorious.

Judges 8:15-16 Then he came to the men of Succoth and said, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you ridiculed me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your weary men?’ ” And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

The people were not plugged into what God was doing. In our lives people won’t understand our faith and our believing God, especially when circumstances seem contrary to our beliefs. Gideon was speaking faith in verse 7 when he said “WHEN THE LORD HAS DELIVERED…” but he was talking faith to people who had no faith, they were trying to get by with their own understanding of the situation.

God can handle our unbelief if we confess it to him, like the man with the demon possessed son who said to Jesus, “Lord I believe, help my unbelief.” God can work with us if we can put our minds into neutral, for nothing is impossible with God.

With a God idea, even when famine and disease is rampant, God can provide.

Judges 8:17-18 Then he tore down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city. And he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?” So they answered, “As you are, so were they; each one resembled the son of a king.”

Now Gideon will deal with the remaining enemy. First he questions them.

Judges 8:19-21 Then he said, “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the LORD lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you.” And he said to Jether his firstborn, “Rise, kill them!” But the youth would not draw his sword; for he was afraid, because he was still a youth. So Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise yourself, and kill us; for as a man is, so is his strength.” So Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.

    Victory.

Once the victory was won, the people wanted Gideon to rule them, and Gideon handled it correctly.

Judges 8:22-23 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you and your son, and your grandson also; for you have delivered us from the hand of Midian.” But Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, nor shall my son rule over you; the LORD shall rule over you.”

He did not want to rule over them, he was a Judge, and he knew that God would rule over them. But then Gideon made a mistake, doing something on his own, not directed by God, and this would cause future problems.

Judges 8:24 Then Gideon said to them, “I would like to make a request of you, that each of you would give me the earrings from his plunder.” For they had gold earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.

Ishmaelites were the enemy of Israel.

Judges 8:25-27 So they answered, “We will gladly give them.” And they spread out a garment, and each man threw into it the earrings from his plunder. Now the weight of the gold earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments, pendants, and purple robes which were on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were around their camels’ necks. Then Gideon made it into an ephod and set it up in his city, Ophrah. And all Israel played the harlot with it there. It became a snare to Gideon and to his house.

An Ephod was a garment the priest wore, and Gideon was not a priest, he had no business creating an ephod. As time will tell, the ephod will be a bone of contention, and a snare to Gideon and his household.

Judges 8:28 Thus Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted their heads no more. And the country was quiet for forty years in the days of Gideon.

Gideon did what God wanted him to do and there was peace in the country. In the next verses we will see some of the problems the ephod caused. But God will call Gideon by his spiritual new name, Jerubbaal.

Judges 8:29-35 Then Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. Gideon had seventy sons who were his own offspring, for he had many wives. And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, whose name he called Abimelech. Now Gideon the son of Joash died at a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. So it was, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel again played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-Berith their god. Thus the children of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side; nor did they show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal (Gideon) in accordance with the good he had done for Israel.

And if you continue to read, you will see that the Ephod becomes a bone of contention and becomes an idol that is much sought after. The ephod takes the people’s attention off of God.

Earrings were used in Deuteronomy too, Deuteronomy 5:8-9 You shall not make for yourself a carved image–any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children in the third and fourth generations of those who hate me.

Pastor Don thinks that if Gideon could, he would have taken back the construction of the Ephod. For he provided the very thing that pulled the people away from God and back to idol worship. And idol worship hurt the nation Israel. This law was put in place to protect us, and to help us keep the focus on God.

There was peace for 40 years, and then they slipped back to the old ways. The good news is that God is a covenant keeping God. In spite of idols and foolishness, God will keep covenant with His people. If He says He will save us, He will save us. If He says He will deliver us, He will deliver us. If He says He will be our God, then He will be our God.

God wants us to be foundational. If we stray from the foundation that God has set for us, we need to get back to that foundation.

It is because God is true to His word that He hasn’t wiped us off the face of the earth. We are given another shot when we miss the mark.

God will save the Jew. The Book of Romans says so. God has a plan for us. Line up with His plan.

Hoping you have a blessed day.

  • Let Go of What’s Killing You by Pastor Don

This is one of the most famous chapters in the Bible and gives a powerful message about who Jesus is.

Jesus is the Son of God showing what man can do on earth. In this chapter He is not performing as God for at this time He is fully man. If Jesus was God doing the miracle we would have no hope, but because He did this miracle as a man, it shows us that all are capable of doing miracles. If Jesus as God does this, it is the Mercy of God. God is Merciful. But because Jesus did this as man – it is the Grace of God, and Grace comes with power to accomplish what God wants us to do.

If a situation does not go the way we want or plan for, we have to see our part in it. We have to ask the Holy Spirit, “What do I have to do?”

We need to elevate our faith by increasing our trust in God. So often when things go wrong we want to blame God. He did not do what we expected Him to do, when we expected Him to do it and how we expected Him to do it. If we blame God we are acting in unbelief. If we blame God we are confusing the issue. People who have lost loved ones ask why did God do that? When it is satan that is the cause of sickness and death.  Yet we want God to bless us when we are speaking words of disobedience, of doubt and unbelief. When we are hard pressed, great miracles begin by trusting God. He will bring home the bacon, maybe not when, how or the way we want it. The problem is that we don’t own a skillet yet, so God can’t give us the bacon.

We get caught in a vicious cycle.  Something is killing us and we put up with it. We are hurting our selves, but not confessing up about it. America is not doing what is right by God. God has a problem. We have taken In God We Trust off our money, we have kicked God out of the schools, and now that there are problems in the schools people are blaming God and wanting God to fix the schools. When we step out of covenant something bad happens, and then we want God to fix it. That is a bad attitude. People pray, “God get me a job,” and then complain because the job is not speedily forthcoming, but they don’t realize that God is waiting for changes in us to make us employable. We have to do everything we can in the natural, to correct our attitudes and our activities to conform with God’s Word. If we are doing something that is questionable, separate ourselves from it.

Remember when saccharin came out as a sweetener and everyone thought it was great, then we found out that it caused cancer in rats. Then people who ingested it started getting sick, it was not God who did that, it was their choice to take this sweetener. Pastor Don pointed out that you are what you eat, not only applies to physical food but also to spiritual teachings.

The focus of Mark Chapter 8 is to get your faith up. Miracles are a disruption of the natural order by a supernatural power. It takes a higher level of faith to take the natural mind and point it in the direction of supernatural faith. The Spirit man wants to believe, but doubt wants to come into existence and cause you to not believe.

Studying the supernatural miracles in the Bible help us to get beyond natural reason to see that the supernatural is possible. If the foundations of our faith are not clearly based on what is delineated by God we will find that we have faulty faith, and our foundation will not be strong.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Remember that faith comes by hearing the Word of God, not from a revelation or a vision or eating too many cheeseburgers. If the revelation and vision do not line up with the Word of God they will not build faith. The foundation of faith built on anything but the Word of God will crumble. If a person is relying on a vision or a revelation that does not line up with the Word of God they will find themselves hopelessly lost.

Faith is the currency of the Kingdom of God.

Mark 8:1 In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them,

Jesus is concerned about the people. He makes sure they hear the Word of God and yet He also realizes their physical need.  Jesus provided for their needs, both physical and spiritual food.

Mark 8:2 “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat.”

Pastor Don smiled and said that Jesus must have been preaching good to hold the people for three days.  (Heather’s note: On Sundays after services our church serves a meal so that we can fellowship with each other) Pastor Don said that once the smells of food come up the stairs, people in the pews start getting restless to go and eat.

Mark 8:3 “And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.”

Having been in Israel and knowing the harsh conditions of the land, and how hard travel was we can understand why Jesus was concerned about food. Jesus knew that the people would not, after spending three days listening to the Word, be able to travel somewhere to get food on a journey that might take two or more days. He knew that they needed food now.

Mark 8:4 Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?”

Pastor Don told us to watch how they answered Jesus.  It shows that they were looking at things in the natural, at their circumstances. They looked at what they were holding onto, using their intellectual perception. If all we needed to do was respond to a situation in the natural, it won’t push us to believe God in supernatural ways. We need to get our mind to focus on God, not on the natural situation. If people are having problems with finances immediately they think of selling their house, liquidating assets, instead of listening for a God idea. People who are seeking to raise up churches also fall into this, looking at what they can do in the natural to attract members, instead of trusting God ideas.

Pastor Don’s mom, during the depression, had little money and jobs were scarce. So she got a God idea, took the few apples they had and flour and sugar and made apple pies. She sent her sons out to sell pieces of pie to those who still had jobs, and then with that was able to invest in more ingredients and make more pies. And their family lived off the profits of the pies until jobs were again available. God used what was in the natural in a way they hadn’t thought of before.

Pastor Don pointed out that we can get trapped into always acting in the natural. Natural ideas are good and we are to do our due diligence, but when a natural idea doesn’t produce fruit, then we have to evaluate it to see if there is a better God idea. If we can get our natural hooked up to the supernatural then we can turn around a situation.

Mark 8:5-7 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. They also had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said to set them also before them.

From the disciple’s point of view the problem was that they had no way to feed the multitude. But Jesus asked a question of how many loaves do they have and found out that they had seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. But Jesus clarified the real problem. We need the Spirit of God to clarify the real problem. We don’t always have it articulated correctly. Pastor Don pointed out that often when a person comes into his office with a marriage problem, they blame their spouse, not looking at what they might have contributed to the problem. The Holy Ghost looks at the situation, but it is our response to the situation that is the problem. The Holy Spirit restated the disciple’s problem, pointing out what they had – seven loaves and a few small fish.

When you have a problem, so often we go to other sources for help when we need to go to God. God can show us the source of the problem. If we do not have enough money it could be the symptom of a deeper problem that we have. It could be that we are lazy, that we are spending to fill a void inside of us. To fully solve the problem, God will heal the source of the problem.

Pastor Don told us that one time when he was traveling he broke out in hives, and he took this problem to God in prayer. He asked if he was out of order in something in his life, and could not find a reason for the hives. The Holy Spirit brought it to mind that he was taking a new vitamin, and that vitamin in the quantities he was taking it caused the hives. When he stopped the vitamin, then the hives went away. When we have a confusing problem, take it to the Holy Spirit and get His help. Pastor Don told us that had he not gone to the Holy Spirit first the problem would have gotten worse, and he might have searched for a medicine or something else to solve the problem, when the answer was simple.

When the disciples could not solve the problem of feeding the multitude, Jesus began the process with what they had – the loaves and fishes.

So often when we want something from God we start thinking that we lack. What God will ask us is: WHAT DO YOU HAVE? What can you bring to the table to help the situation. When Elijah met the widow who could not pay her debt, he asked her what she had, and initially she said that she had nothing. But upon careful questioning, because she was the wife of a priest, they found out that she had oil in the house. That oil was multiplied supernaturally to pay off the widow’s debt and to support her.

So often we say, we are poor and we don’t have nothing. We walk in self-pity, lack, and feel that we do not have enough to do anything. We look at our talents and say I would be ok if I only had more of this quality, or that talent. If I had more of _______. But God does not look at our lack, he asks us WHAT DO YOU HAVE? He will start out with what we have. When we give it to Him as a pledge, He will produce something. With the widow, the anointing oil was committed to God, and by covenant God provided for the widow.  If we give to God all that we have, He will use it. WHAT DO YOU HAVE? What do you bring to the table? I don’t have much….. God will say, “That’s ok.”

After the disciples gathered the loaves and the fishes, Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks, blessing them, and then giving them to the disciples to hand out. He did the same for the fish. So often we look to our lack, forgetting to thank God and bless what He has provided for us. God took those loaves and fishes, and multiplied them miraculously.

Mark 8:8 So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments.

Notice, all the multitude and disciples were filled, and there were seven baskets of leftover fragments. The multitude was 4,000, but that does not include women and children. So these few loaves and fishes fed many, with leftovers!

Mark 8:9-10 Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away, immediately got into the boat with His disciples, and came to the region of Dalmanutha.

Pastor Don continued on with Mark 8:11 Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him.

The Pharisees came out to test Jesus, seeking a sign. They had seen many signs and heard of signs from eyewitnesses, but they kept seeking signs. They wanted to set up circumstances and situations to test Him, and that grieves the Holy Spirit. This is similar to what Pastor Don taught with Gideon, not to lay out fleeces. We need to trust God and trust the Holy Spirit. Because we are born again, fleece are not needed for we have the Holy Spirit within us. Any fleece we set up can be duplicated by satan, who is happy to feed us lies.

To test God is to set yourself up, for since God is God, why should He do what we think He should do, when we start telling God what to do we are putting ourselves in a position over God.

If we trust what is created we will be disappointed, but as a Child of God, He knows our needs, and fills the desires of our hearts far better than we can see with our limited perceptions.

Pastor Don told us that sometimes it seems frustrating that God doesn’t always tell us the whole situation, sometimes He gives us only a bit of information that we need for the moment, then adds more as needed. He doesn’t give us the complete map. We have to realize that God, besides providing for us, is building trust as we lean more and more on Him. Pastor Don gave an example of a child asking for a motorcycle when they are little and being very disappointed when his parents don’t provide it for him. What the child does not realize is that as a child they are not capable of safely handling the motorcycle, and could get hurt. When they get older and the parents provide the motorcycle, then they are capable of handling it and can appreciate why they were not provided the same vehicle when they were a child.

God treats us the same way. In His love for us, sometimes He withholds something from us because we are not ready to receive it, we need to grow more, or it is something that would provide a danger to us at one stage of our development, but when we are ready then God provides what we asked for. God knows the right season and time for us. We need to trust God.

Pastor Don pointed out that when the multitudes came to hear Jesus speak, they had no idea that God was going to also provide unlimited loaves and fishes. Some people could have asked, why didn’t God build a convenience store near where Jesus was going to speak? Why didn’t God provide doughnuts and coffee? Why didn’t God provide a store a mile down? If the people had gotten upset and started complaining, they would have missed the blessing of God. So often our mouths prevent God from blessing us.

Sometimes it is hard to speak the truth of God when our circumstances are tough and we need God NOW.

Jesus told the multitude to SIT DOWN so that they could see what Jesus did. What did Jesus do? He gave thanks to God. The people were not used to that. They were used to begging God, asking for help in times of distress. What Jesus did was to take what they had and give thanks to God. The miracle began when Jesus gave thanks, then he distributed the food.

Detractors often point to the miracles of Jesus and say that they are allegories. If this was an allegory, Mark would have told us that it was a parable, an allegory. But this was a factual occurrence that was witnessed by all who were present. Why do people think that the writers of the Bible are stupid, and that they cannot report facts?

It was not a vision, 4,000 men do not have a vision simultaneously. They saw something that happened supernaturally before their very eyes. The event occurred. When you know that, what does that do for your faith?

Mark 8:12 But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.”

Jesus sighed at their insistence of signs. When people step out beyond scripture, speaking words that are not scripturally sound, it is meeting a need of theirs. God gave the Word to us, to prevent us from error. Unfortunately we often only look at the parts of scripture that we want to hear and believe. It is like the Pharisees who only saw what they wanted to see. What Jesus did was true, the Pharisees did not want to acknowledge it because then it would be a challenge to their power and authority. They needed to question Jesus to meet their need to be in charge. Anything that challenges their authority needs to be kept down. But with that attitude they color the truth of the Gospel.

It is true that their generation would not see a sign – in fact it would fade out in AD 70 when Rome destroyed Jerusalem and the temple.

Mark 8:13 And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side.

Although the scene changes and he gets into the boat, the lesson for the disciples continues, and we see that they still do not get what Jesus is teaching them.

Mark 8:14  Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat.

The disciples were fed well when they handed out the food. They were again getting hungry, and realized that they forget to bring the leftovers with them. It is easy to get confused, and in the natural to make a mistake by not having foresight. They only brought one loaf of bread with them. And their comments show that they are still thinking in the natural, not realizing that the Greatest Miracle of History was in the Boat with them.

Mark 8:15 Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

Because they made the mistake in verse 14, they – still thinking in the natural – thought Jesus was chastising them for that mistake, not realizing that Jesus was not talking about the physical, He was teaching them something spiritual.

Pastor Don said that they were probably thinking to themselves, “Oh man, I forgot food.” They are forgetting that Jesus showed them that a little can feed many. Isn’t it possible that if they needed food that one loaf would be more than enough to feed them and many others?

Mark 8:16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”

This is where we miss it so much, we approach our problems with human reason. They reasoned among themselves – that was their mistake. They needed to bring the problem to Jesus for clarification.  They did not learn the lesson Jesus was teaching them.

Mark 8:17-21 But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?”When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.” “Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.” So He said to them, “How is it you do not understand?”

If the disciples were still thinking in the natural they could have done some fancy numerology.

12 baskets + 7 baskets = 19 baskets, 1 + 9 = 10 which equals the 10 Commandments, so God is disciplining me….7 is a number of perfection, 12 is a number of the apostles, etc. But Jesus was NOT talking about the numbers, but the magnanimous supernatural power of God, the benevolence of the Holy Spirit and the might of God. Jesus pointed out that God provided a need beyond anything that they could have done on their own. So why were they back to thinking about lack of bread? That Jesus was showing them that faith could overcome the natural, that God can multiply, and all it took was giving what they had to God, thanking God and then He takes us to the next level.

A little bit of trust in God, getting your mind off of your lack, and God will blow you away with his abundant love and provision.

Jesus asked them, “Do you not remember?”

Everyone has experienced some miracle in their life, on some level. We need to remember the miracles that God has provided. This puts us in the position of faith. How can God give us more and more when we are not thankful for what He has already given us?

Think about how our children act to us. When they get mad at us how can we give them something and teach them that getting mad gets what they want? Do we keep giving and giving things when they are unthankful? To do that would create spoiled children. God does not want spoiled children in His kingdom, He wants mature believers.

In everything we do we need to learn to trust God. Trust God when we are shopping, cooking, sickness, prosperity. Remember that we are His Child, and trust God.

    Have a blessed night!

  • Exercise your Do-Gooder by Vicki Gabler

Vicki gave a remarkable Bible study, with lots of scriptures that connect with what she was sharing. Hope you enjoy the depth of the study, one thing that blessed me was the brainstorming about other Bible people who displayed doing good. I always love to see how a person approaches their studies, for it teaches me new ways to dig deeper into the teachings of the Bible.

She began with a story of a way God spoke to her when she was in a time of distress. God will speak to us through our circumstances.

In August 2001, Vicki’s husband died. One day she went out into her backyard and saw a moving band of white in her backyard. She went to see what this was and discovered that it was 1000′s of ants carrying eggs. She remembered a Bible verse that said, go to the ant. While examining the ants carefully her attention was caught by one ant carrying two eggs, and the load was so heavy for the ant that she kept dropping the eggs and stumbling. God told Vicki that that ant represented her and the burden that she was carrying with the death of her husband. That got her attention so she kept her eye on the ant with the two eggs.

She noticed that the other ants seemed oblivious to this ant’s distress. God told Vicki that those were the people who passed her on the street unaware of her struggles. And also other people who were aware of Vicki’s loss of her husband, but they did nothing to help her. For quite some time no friends, family, neighbors, or even her pastor reached out to help her.

A few months later a few stepped up to help her. God put some people into her life but they were not local, they were long distance encouragers. At one point she prayed and a church lady came up to her and told Vicki that she had been praying for her for quite some time. Vicki told her, “I wish you had told me that sooner.” And Vicki then encouraged us to let people know when we pray for them because sometimes knowing that can be a comfort.

Vicki kept watching the ants, and she noticed that one ant walked past the struggling ant with two eggs, this ant stopped, reversed direction and went up to the ant. The ant patted the distressed ant on the back, both ants stood up on hind legs and waved their antennaes and seemed to have a conversation. The ant then left after the “conversation” and the struggling ant still tried to carry the two eggs, but she seemed strengthened by the encounter. This ant represents those who encourage you in life. They help somewhat.

The ant continued on, struggling and dropping the eggs. Finally another ant came and tried to take the eggs, and the little struggling ant got very upset. The helper ant calmed down the struggling ant, and they stood on hind legs and seemed to have a conversation with the ant. Vicki said that it seemed to be saying, “I can help you, please let me help.” The helper ant took the two eggs and continued to walk with them. The little ant followed the helper, but she was tired and struggling. Finally she climbed up on a blade of grass and stood up and stretched to see the ant with the two eggs. She couldn’t completely let go of her burden. She watched the eggs until they disappeared into the mass of white, and them turned, probably to go back to the colony.

The Lord said that the helper ant represented Me (God). God told Vicki that He was going to carry her burden away, for He is the burden bearer.

When the Lord wants to minister to you, he will go to great lengths to put you in the right spot, sometimes a place you do not ordinarily go, just so he can minister to you. Vicki usually did not spend so much time in her back yard, but God gave her that living parable to make His point to her.

We then looked at Galatians 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Vicki asked us who is ALL? All is everybody, not just family, but also strangers and the man in the street with the filthy, long, matted hair. When the Bible says ALL, it means ALL.

1 Peter 2:17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

This also includes people who dislike you.

Luke 6:27-28 (Jesus speaking) “But I say to you who hear. Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.”

Jesus commands us to DO GOOD. Do good to everyone.

Romans 12:17-21 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will prepay,” says the Lord. Therefore, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

    Again, this says ALL MEN.

Proverbs 25:21-22 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink: For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the LORD will reward you.

God rewards us when we do good, even for our enemy. It is difficult to be loving to our enemies, and sometimes even to our friends and spouses. How is it possible to do what seems so impossible? We have the help of the Holy Spirit and God.

Colossians 3:12-15 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

Vicki pointed out that the proper attire for being good to each other is to put on tendermercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering. We are the elect of God, holy and beloved. We want to dress ourselves in tender mercies, bearing with one another.

Matthew 7:12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Luke 6:31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

Believe it or not, the Golden Rule really IS in the Bible. And it also instructs us to do good.

Vicki had us brainstorm ways to do good to others.

Some ideas were if you are going shopping ask your neighbor if they need something, babysit for a single mom with small children, pray for a person. be a listener (2 ears, 1 mouth), withholding a punishment, set an example of being nice.

Someone shared how on the job there was a supervisor who treated them like an enemy. They prayed for the person and treated them with respect, and over time the situation eased.

We need to love our enemies with wisdom and courage, to do God’s will, and pray for them until they have a heart change. God empowers us to do what He tells us to do. When God’s wrath comes against someone who has been causing you trouble, don’t gloat.

One of the best ways to do good for a person is to pray for them, and let them know that you are praying for them. It is very comforting to know that someone is praying for you, and often people pray, but don’t share the fact that they are praying for the person.

The second part of Galatians 6:10 tells us to do good especially to those of the household of faith. We, who are saved, are royal householders.

Hebrews 6:10 is similar to Galatians 6:10. Hebrews 6:10 For God  is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

Romans 12:10-11 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.

When we are kind we are serving the Lord. It does not matter the denomination of the one you are being kind to. We are all one body IN CHRIST.

Philippians 2:1-5 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.

The Mind of Christ is to do good to others. If God puts on your heart to do something for another person, even if it feels strange, do it.

1 Peter 1:22-25 Since you have purified our souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because “All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the LORD endures forever. Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.

We purify our soul by obeying the truth, loving FERVANTLY, with a pure heart, wanting to do good, trying to find creative ways to do good, no matter how crazy the ways seem to our rational mind.

In the Bible are many people who are encouragers: Barnabas, Paul, David & Jonathan, Naomi, Jethro, Jesus, Deborah, Elizabeth, Abagail, Nehemiah and Boaz, Mary & Martha, the Centurion, Joseph, Mary are a few of the names thrown out.

2 Chronicles 28:9-15 But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out before the army that came to Samaria, and said to them: “Look, because the LORD God of your fathers was angry with Judah, He has delivered them into your hand; but you have killed them in a rage that reaches up to heaven. And now you propose to force the children of Judah and Jerusalem to be your male and female slaves; but are you not also guilty before the LORD your God? Now hear me, therefore, and return the captives, whom you have taken captive from your brethren, for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you.” Then some of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who came from the war, and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives here, for we already have offended the LORD. You intend to add to our sins and to our guilt; for our guilt is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.” So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the leaders and all the assembly. Then the men who were designated by name rose up and took the captives, and from the spoil they clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them and gave them sandals, gave them food and drink, and anointed them; and they let all the feeble ones ride on donkeys. So they brought them to their brethren at Jerhico, the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Samaria.

They clothed the captives and gave them shoes, and took care of the feeble ones.

Why must we do good? God is good and we are His children, and we are rewarded for doing good.

Deuteronomy 15:7-11 “If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs. Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, ‘The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,’ and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the LORD against you, and it become sin among you. You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’”

God blesses you and all your works. We can know that we are God’s when we share His love with other men. Put your words into action.

As Vicki says, “EXERCISE YOUR DO-GOODER.”

Hebrews 13:16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

It pleases God when we do good. If God is well pleased, that blesses us.

Philippians 4:18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.

When we do good, it is an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.

When we do good, not only does it please God and we get blessed, but it also is a way to resist the devil. For if we are seeking to do good, there is no place for him to come in. We also do good because God commands it.

Someone pointed out that it also helps us physically, for tests have shown that when you do good things for others, your blood pressure reduces. It also helps with depression, for it gets you out of you, and reaching out to others.

Vicki also pointed out that sometimes, when we do good to another, it may be that we are the ONLY PERSON who has ever done good for that person, and that can profoundly affect a person’s life. It also makes us like Jesus who went around doing good.

Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

If you do good, God is with you.

We closed the Bible study praying for various prayer concerns, and someone remarked, “Any excuse to pray is a good excuse.” We not only love Bible studies, but also prayer.

I sometimes wish you could come and visit our Bible studies, we enjoy them so much that it is sad when we have to stop. While I faithfully report my notes, what isn’t always conveyed is the excitement and joy with which we look at scriptures. I laugh because often when someone directs us to read verse 18, they start looking and end up back at verse 3 and read to verse 24. Visiting pastors often comment at how hungry we are for the Word of God. It is true, it is so wonderful to spend the time in Bible study.

Could you imagine a Bible study that went on 24/7? When one person stopped, another stepped forward. I could live there – bring a cot, a blanket and my Bible. Could anything be so wonderful?

    Have a blessed day!

  • Pastor Don started out his sermon on 7/1 by pointing out that a lot of people have faith, but their faith has not been tested. We really do not know where we stand in faith until it has been tested.

We then read Psalm 37:1-8 Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret–it only causes harm.

We repeated three times “Do not fret–it only causes harm.”

Pastor Don pointed out that when our backs are to the walls, if God does not show up and we don’t know what to do, we have to work at not fretting. We have to realize that God is God. We need to get into His Presence, feel, touch, and be assured that He is there. He has the situation under control no matter what circumstances say to the contrary. He has a solution to our situation. His mercies are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness.

So much of what we get from the media, from TV and radio, indoctrinate us for defeat. Bills, our mental situation, greed, other people can deflate us. Lazy faith won’t work. If we have lazy faith we are casting aside our future hope and deciding that God doesn’t intervene in our situation anymore. We have gone wrong and believed a lie, God is still on the throne. We do not want to be trapped in the fragments of our mind. We do not want the natural to dominate our Spirit.

Paul said, 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

God is the God of power. He has sent to us the guarantee of the seal of His Holy Spirit.
We need to listen to the Holy Spirit. There are four things we can get wrong if we are not trusting God.

    1. PARALYSIS OF ANALYSIS: When the situation is tough we can get caught up in analyzing the situation and doing nothing – this can lead to depression and confusion. We can think through the problem, realize the problem, but not have a proper analysis of the problem. We need to spend time with God, and not keep analyzing. Overanalyses can cause us to not be able to move forward or backward. In this life if you stand still it only gets worse.

    2. YOU MUST ADJUST YOUR PERSPECTIVE, the very manner that you look at things. Often the way we look at things is with unrealistic hope and expectations. Our perspective is wrong. God has an answer. Pastor Don gave an example of a person who had spent years getting into financial trouble and prayed about the situation, wanting faith, and a quick answer to his problems. Pastor Don pointed out that he had unrealistic expectations. There was no problem in asking God for help, believing in faith for His intervention, but he was unrealistic in expecting that the answer should come quickly. Sometimes we want a quick answer, but it took us a long time to get to the situation we are in, so why does the answer to our problem have to be quick? After David was anointed, he still was a foolish boy, and needed to grow up. The 17 years that he hid out from Saul matured David. When we face a challenge, we often forget where we came from. God brought us out of a situation and put us where we are, put us here for a reason. We need to look over our shoulder and see where we came from and get the right perspective, then alter our wrong perspective about the situation. We often say, “My problem is too big,” and end up in the paralysis of analysis, coming to the wrong conclusion. We reduce ourselves to being too small in our eyes. Forgetting that we are a child of God. Our God is a BIG GOD. We are a child of a BIG GOD. He is bigger than we think. Our ally is the Creator of the Universe. When we get the right perspective our problem is brought down to the proper proportion. God is in our situation and we walk in divine help. We are more capable and able than we think because God is inside of us. Remember: BIG GOD, little devil.

    3. BEGIN TO DISCERN THE NATURAL AND SUPERNATURAL
Pastor Don pointed out that sometimes we can start out our day “normal” and then go off the wall. Sometimes unimportant events cause strife. When we have an uncharacteristic response or our mood changes abruptly, we have to discern where the mood came from. Sometimes it is a supernatural force that is affecting your mood. When you get a thought you need to discern if it comes from God or from the devil. You need to remind yourself that what you are responding to is a stupid thing, and that you don’t need to get upset about it. Ask yourself why there is strife in the air? Am I being set up? If you have a thought you can’t get out of your mind, where did it come from? Sometimes ideas and thoughts come from the pit of hell and not from you. Sometimes the devil does make you do it.

    4. LAZY APPLICATION OF CARNAL FAITH Carnal faith is when you, by yourself, believe something and you, by your flesh hold onto something to bring it to pass. And often it is very shaky faith. On Monday you believe, Tuesday you doubt, Wednesday you need to believe, Thursday you forget about it, Friday you are reminded, so you say a faith statement about it, Saturday you doubt it and Sunday you are back in faith. Carnality needs to line up with the Spirit and then you can say, “Yes, I believe.” Pastor Don pointed out that you hope you get a good grade, take a test, and then start wondering if I passed the test, hope I get a good grade, then say, “oops, I need to believe by faith.” Sometimes that is the way we approach things when we are on a mission. God told me to…… and then you work it out using carnal faith. Carnal faith will work, but only as long as we hold onto the faith. God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. He is looking for faith. Jesus said, that He hopes that He will find faith on earth.

We need to assess where we are in our faith. The position of carnal faith is challenged in the environment, and know that I believe it right now. Where are we in our faith.

1 Corinthians 3:18-19 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written , “He catches the wise in their own craftiness.”

    5. WE NEED A MOMENT OF INSANE FAITH, CRAZY FAITH. Where it is totally insane for you to believe what God has put on your heart. Faith that can’t be denied. Faith that moves mountains, changes lives, brings miracles. The faith of Jesus. Believing what is unbelievable. Everything believable is foolishness. God wants to give us crazy faith, changing the world, contrary to circumstances.

1 Corinthians 3:20 and again , “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” We need to give the glory to God, even when circumstances do not justify our faith. Some of us need a name change. God changed Abram’s name to Abraham. He was aged, and had no children, but God named him “Abraham, which means The father of many nations.” Every time he had to introduce himself as Abraham, people would ask, how many children do you have? None, but I am Abraham, the father of many nations.

God placed in us the ability to have insane faith, faith that God can do something for us and through us. Real faith is blind. Blind faith is that you believe it, but can’t see it. I can’t see it, but I can believe for it in faith.

Pastor Don then went on to talk about Judges 6 and Gideon, pointing out that Gideon had to get out of his perspective. God called Gideon a mighty man of God, but Gideon was hiding out from the enemy. Without God, Gideon was not a mighty man, but with God, he became mighty. He had to look at the evidence and remember whose he was. God rewarded Gideon’s obedience to His commands. Our situation will not change until we accept that we are in a mess because we have not obeyed God. We can get out of our messes by obedience to God.

Pastor Don then taught what he shared with us on the Friday Bible study about Gideon.

A few extra comments about Gideon. God rewards obedience, any situation cannot be changed until we accept that we failed, that we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in if we had obeyed God. God did not pledge to keep us out of trouble if we are not in obedience to Him, but to deliver us when we turn back to Him and choose to obey Him..

Tell our problems to Jehovah Jireh and He will deliver us.

God gave Gideon a chance to have Insane Faith. Carnal faith fades with circumstances, but God gives us chances to step out in Insane Faith. He says, “Trust Me for something greater than you and your carnal faith can believe for.”

Moses stood before Pharaoh, parted the Red Sea, lead the people through the wilderness in moments of insane faith.

Joshua and Caleb believed with insane faith that God had given them the land, and that God would help them deal with the giants. They saw the giants as small and their God big.

Hannah believed in faith she would have a son, Eli the priest thought she was drunk, she was drunk with insane faith, and gave birth to a great prophet, Samuel.

Gabriel appears to a little virgin girl and tells her she will give birth to the Messiah. She answers with insane faith and says, “Let it be to me according to your word.”

Jesus walked on the sea. A carpenter who was Lord of Lords, King of Kings, all knowing, who went to the Cross in a moment of insane faith, and saved mankind from sin and death.

With crazy faith we realize that God gives us ability, favor, and grace to do things that seem too big for us to accomplish with carnal faith, to help us get beyond the paralysis of analysis.

Everything is ok if we are honest with God about our faith. God will help us to get from Point A to Point B.

Pastor Don had people come forward who needed a blessing from the Holy Spirit for the things that they need insane faith for. The Holy Spirit showed up big, and blessed many people. Those people were instructed to find a person in the congregation to share what they are believing for with insane faith. And then the ones who did not come forward to the altar also were told to share what they are believing for with carnal faith. Pastor Don is looking forward to hearing many testimonies.

Hoping you find moments of insane faith in your lives.

  • Building Faith in the Face of Fear Part 2 by Heather

Here is a link for part one.

Like Joy often tells us, the first rule of holes is to stop digging. David finally took a stand and began his ascent to the next mountaintop. It is here that we will take up his story, looking at the Psalm he wrote that commemorated his time in the Cave of Adullam.

Psalm 34:1 I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. David is in the cave with the 400 undisciplined men. The men must have noticed Goliath’s sword, heard of David’s exploits and David could have basked in the reflected glory of his past. Instead David turned his men’s mind toward the Lord. David did not want to remain hiding in the cave, so he did the most important thing, blessing the Lord. The word “bless” in Hebrew is Barak (Baw-rak) it means to kneel, to bless God as an act of adoration, to praise, salute and thank. David turned his attention from Saul (from what caused him fear and worry) to his only hope of salvation God. When we are hurting, in the midst of our troubles we have two choices. We can turn our attention to the situation which only digs us deeper, or we can focus on God. Tell our problems how big our God is.  Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Pastor Don has told us that often when we are holding fearful thoughts that the best way to banish them is by praising God, by saying His Word, by speaking scripture. Our minds cannot hold two thoughts simultaneously, so if we are filling our minds with His Word, then there is no room for fear.

While the 400 men with David were real men who needed to be brought into order, often when we have our challenges and trials we have 400 or more thoughts coursing through our mind to be brought into order. We cannot let our thoughts run wild or undisciplined. The word tells us to 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.  Just as David had to help discipline his mighty men, we need to discipline our thoughts and fears, making them adhere to the truth of God. We can never let our minds be ruled by our soul (mind, will, emotions), but by the Spirit of God.

We need to realize that GOD IS EXACTLY THE SAME, WHETHER WE ARE IN THE CAVE OR AT THE KING’S TABLE. It is not God’s doing when we fall, it is our choosing to focus on circumstances rather than the truth of God.

Step 2: Psalm 34:2 My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; the humble shall hear of it and be glad. Remember our soul is our mind, will and emotions. We need to take them in hand and one way to do that is to take the focus off of ourselves and boast in the Lord. The word boast in Hebrew is halal (haw-lal) it means to shine, to rave, to cause to celebrate, to commend, to give light and renown.  This is a step towards leadership that David took. He did not just worship for himself, but he wanted the others with him who were insecure and had fears to join with him in worship. David was not going to go into God’s presence alone, but bringing the others with him. David was a musician, and as a musician that is one way to pull others into worship.

Step 3: Psalm 34:3 Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together.  Magnify in Hebrew is gadal (gaw-dal) which means to make large in various senses such as body, mind, estate or honor and pride, to advance, boast, bring up, exceed, excellent, to promote and proudly speak about. God wanted to get his men’s minds off of themselves and their predicament, and to focus their attention on the Lord. Now God does not need to be made bigger. Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. When we are faced with a problem we need to make God bigger in our eyes and in our minds than the problem. Often we magnify the problem instead of realizing how big our God is. Think of a pair of binoculars – when you look through them the foreground is blocked out, you focus on the object you are wanting to see closer, and the background distractions are blurred. So David focused on God, and the distractions of Saul and his circumstances receded.

Step 4: Psalm 34:4 I sought the LORD, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. The Hebrew word for sought is “darash” (Daw rash) means to tread or frequent, to follow, to seek or ask, to worship, diligently inquire, question, require and search.

This would sort of be like a shepherd looking for the lost sheep. If we want to get back into the presence of God, we need to really seek the Lord, not just seek him with our minds tuning in and out.  Matthew 7:7-8 Ask, and it will be given you, seek, and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. James 4:7-8 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.  This is just what David did, as he drew nearer and nearer to God, the fears and anxiety about Saul decreased, and he began to order his life to be more in line with God’s will for him. David was no longer running from Saul, he was running to God.

Step 5 Psalm 34:5 They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed. The Hebrew word for looked is “nabat” (naw bat) to look intently at, to regard with pleasure, favor or care, to behold, to see. One thing that Pastor Don often points out to us is that there is no shame in Christ. When we come to Christ and repent of our sins, repent about what we have missed, He, as the Psalm 103:12-14  As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, so the LORD pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. When we realize how passionately Jesus loves us, how He wants none to be lost, when we feel His love surround us, we too will look to Him and our face will radiate the joy of the Lord. When we realize how close we are to God’s heart, and how He cares for us, there is no shame for our failures. There is just the desire to obey and trust Him, and take the next step.

Step 6 Psalm 34:6 This poor man cried out, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The Hebrew word for cried is “qara” (kaw-raw) This word had an interesting meaning – to call forth, invite, preach, proclaim, pronounce, publish, say. Mark 11:23-26 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, “Be removed and be cast into the sea,” and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses. We have seen David work himself up to believing in faith in God, and now he has cried out to God and God has heard him. If you continue to read the story of David with King Saul you will see that he acted honorably with King Saul. There were many opportunities for David to kill King Saul and David did not touch God’s anointed. He loved King Saul because he was once anointed by God. David is speaking words of faith and claiming that God will save him out of all of His troubles. And God does save him. He does have what he said.

Step 7& 8  Psalm 34:7-8 The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them. Oh taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! So often when we are running hither and thither in panic we do not see the escape that God has for us or the plan that God is carrying out. When we stand in faith, and trust God our eyes, our perception is cleared and we see what God is doing. The Hebrew word for taste is “taam” (Taw am), to perceive to taste. And see is “raah (raw aw) means to see, advise self, appear, approve, behold, to regard, to think, to view, visions. If we are focused on our circumstances we cannot see what is going on in the spiritual. The best example of this is 2 Kings 6:14-18 The king of Syria came to surround Elisha the prophet, Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city, with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. Elisha prays and the enemy was struck with blindness, they brought the enemy to Samaria and instead of punishing the enemy, they fed the enemy and let them return home. The raiders no longer came against Israel.

By honoring God, blessing God’s name, praising and thanking God, and taking his focus off of the enemy and placing it soundly on God, David was able to conquer his fears. He brought his fears under control, trained the 400 men into mighty men of valor, and ultimately used this valley experience to hone the skills he would need to be king of Israel. This experience drew David closer to God, built a strong relationship that would last his lifetime. David was known as a Man after God’s own Heart. Not only did David conquer his situation, but his relationship with God was strengthened.

We too need to remember to turn our focus toward God, and away from the enemy. Remember we have a choice as to where we put our faith. We can put our faith toward satan if we fall into fear and anxiety, or we can put our faith in God, who has already conquered satan, and believe that God is there for us. Where are you going to put your faith?

    Hoping this blesses you!

  • Building Faith in the Face of Fear Part 1 by Heather

On Sunday, July 1, I got to teach the Bible study at church. God has been dealing with me about heros of faith and focusing on God regardless of circumstances, so this Bible study helped me to focus on those topics.

I have lately been spending time looking at people in the Bible who I consider to be great heroes of faith. I’ve been convicted by the integrity of Daniel, impressed by Paul’s staying the course even though he knew that it would lead to death and Jesus, in human form, always doing what God tells Him to do. Recently I have been looking at the life of David. He had a heart for God that I so desire to have in my worship of God. I am encouraged that, despite the major mistakes that he made in his walk with God, God kept reaching out to him and David kept worshipping God. I am so convinced that what makes all the Heroes of Faith heroes is worship. I am not just talking about praise and worship in church, but a heartfelt worship that encompasses all their waking hours. Daniel without ceasing during all the years in captivity (from the age of about 18 until he died at 83) prayed three times a day to God, refused to eat the rich foods of Babylon, and even at the threat of death for petitioning God instead of Darius prayed in front of an open window where all could see. Paul went where God told him to go and preached the good news. Paul continued teaching and preaching even in the face of death.

But David is such an inspiration to me. If you want to learn worship, study his Psalms. I find them so encouraging. He takes all to God. He may start out in a Psalm in great distress complaining about his enemy, but ends up worshipping God. I don’t think David’s Psalms were written in a few moments, I think they are the summation of long periods of trials and tribulation. One of my favorite studies was to link the Psalms to the various experiences that David had.

What touches my heart is how David navigated the highs and lows, the peaks and valleys of his life and stayed focused on God and his love for God. We all know David had a heart for worship, but that does not mean that his life went smoothly. For this reason he is a good person to study. We all have our highs and lows in our walks through life.

I don’t like to admit this, but sometimes it is the valley experiences that draw me closer to God. Sometimes when I am on the mountaintop I can get distracted with the view, and not come to God as much as I do in the valley. I have been improving in this though. God tends to move us from glory to glory, from one mountain top to a higher mountain top. But to do that we have to leave one mountain, go through the valley and then climb the next mountain. We usually do not jump from mountain top to mountain top.

What impresses me the most about David is that no matter where he was, he kept his focus on God.  It is too easy to get caught up in the minute by minute details of circumstances and go off course. Pastor Don keeps teaching us that when we find that we have gone off course, to go back to where we missed it and continue on. To come to God, seek godly counsel and ask the Holy Spirit what our next step is. If we try to find our way on our own we will only get more lost. Psalm 23 tells us that we will go THROUGH the valley of the shadow of death, we are not to camp there. When we face our valley experiences we have to, as Pastor Don said, stand and stay the course. God has a plan and a purpose for our lives and to fulfill those we have to keep moving forward.

Too often, when we hit that valley we panic and face the valley with fear. What we need to realize is that FEAR AND FAITH ARE EXACTLY THE SAME ENERGY RUNNING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS.

    FAITH SAYS, “I BELIEVE GOD.”

FEAR SAYS, “I BELIEVE THE ENEMY, SATAN.”

God produces faith through His Word and His Promises. Satan produces faith through fear and terror and worry.  If satan can get us to have fear and worry about our circumstances that allows him to step into our realm and cause more reasons to have fear and worry.

Let’s see how David went from one mountain top experience to the next.

Initially David had a rapid rise to the top of his mountain.

    1. As a shepherd boy he was brought before Samuel and anointed to be king. He handled that very well, going back in the field to continue shepherding. He did not take the anointing to be king to mean that he had to immediately go and unseat King Saul. He just kept doing what he was doing and God did the promoting.

    2. King Saul lost the anointing of the Holy Spirit because of his disobedience to God. When the Holy Spirit anointing left him, demonic activity rushed in to fill the void. Saul’s servants thought that worshipful music might ease the demonic activity, and David was brought before King Saul to play music. David did not play for King Saul, he played and worshipped directly to God, and the worship towards God causes demons to flee.

    3. Then we find David being a messenger, taking bread and cheese to his brothers in the field. He hears about the giant Goliath, challenges Goliath and with God’s help defeats him with a slingshot.  1 Samuel 18:7 the women sing, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”

    4. David is invited to marry the King’s daughter, Michal. With that David is fully in the palace as a member of the royal family, and he becomes a victorious leader in the army. Saul stirred up trouble and David and Jonathan (Saul’s son) would put the enemy down.

David and Jonathan became good friends, and it would have placed David in the number three position for the kingdom, for if Saul died, Jonathan would have ascended the throne. But that was not God’s plan. God wanted David to be king, David was anointed to be king. God would permit circumstances to change this situation. The plans of man will not unseat God’s plans.

David’s time in the palace was not wasted. Smart as he was, I am certain that David learned leadership by watching King Saul – good and not so good leadership. He built connections and knew what was going on in the kingdom. To his credit, David stayed humble, serving the king and the kingdom. I am certain that he figured God would handle things and he had a healthy respect for those God anointed, even when the anointing passed.

As we will see in a moment, David was not ready for leadership. God had traits that he had to develop in David before he could ascend to the throne, and these traits David would learn in the valley, when he faced his fears. While the valley experiences were not pleasant, when he came out of them, David was ready to be king.

It took only a few steps for David to descend from the heights to the depths of despair.

Saul was stirred by jealousy over David and sought to kill him with a javelin. As a warrior, Saul was skilled with weapons but each time the javelin was thrown at David, God deflected the point and David escaped unscathed. David ran for his life. I have debated this, and am not certain what he should have done. God would not want us to stay in a situation that is dangerous for our lives, but at the same time, the running David did in fear left the way open for satan to cause havoc. We need discernment to know when to stand, when to hide, when to run, and when to act. I suspect David just ran, not consulting God as to the best plan of action. David REACTED instead of ACTED. It took just four steps to bring him from the heights to the depths of despair.

    1) He runs to his home, and his wife urges him to get out of the house. 2) David runs from there and goes to Nob, to the home of the priests and asks for a weapon and food. He leaves with the sword of Goliath and the showbread. But one of Saul’s servants saw this, reported it to Saul and all the priests in Nob were killed for assisting David. That panic reaction of David caused the life of those around him. 3) Next David, in unclear thinking goes to the King of Gath – a Philistine, and comes there with the sword of their slain warrior – Goliath. What was David thinking? In order to get out of that situation, David fakes insanity (although his actions are not all that sane, for when we run we make stupid mistakes).4) He escapes there and ends up hiding in the Cave of Adullam where everyone who was in distress and discontented gathered to him. 1 Samuel 22:2. Four hundred men gathered to David in the cave, but they were undisciplined, and far from being the mighty men they would become.

How did David Get himself out of that pit of depression, I will share tomorrow.

    Have a blessed day!
