  • Pride by Pastor Jerry Moore

Pastor Jerry, here from California, taught an incredible Bible study today. He began the study by having us stand and say the Lord’s Prayer. He mentioned that in some churches, people have decided that the Lord’s Prayer is just a model prayer, and sort of look down on another person who might pray the Lord’s Prayer. One member said it is like the comfort food of prayers, and another member mentioned that the Lord’s Prayer is in the Bible, so it is as biblical to pray it, as to pray any other prayer in the Bible.

Pastor Jerry mentioned that we can at times be very prideful about our prayers. He mentioned that a little knowledge can very easily turn into pride.

I love Pastor Jerry’s Bible studies because he gives a lot of Bible references, and handouts!!!!

Luke 12:16-21 Then He spoke a parable to them saying, “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, “What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops? So he said, “I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years, take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” But God said to him, “Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided? So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

Deuteronomy 8:17  “then you say in your heart, “My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.

1 Corinthians 1:31 “that, as it is written, “He who glories let him glory in the LORD.”

So many “I’s” in the above passages. The man was foolish to lay up treasures and not give God the credit.  The farmer did not give credit where credit is due. He did not cause the seeds to grow into crops, he got prideful and felt that the abundance of crops was his doing, when really it was the grace of God. The source of his riches was God and his words are not giving a witness to the glory of God.

Don’t get swallowed up in pride to where we cease giving credit to God. We like approval, a pat on the back, recognition in public. Sometimes in public people might be ashamed to give the credit to God, but God is the one who deserves the credit.

Be careful about what you say. Pride can sneak up on you, out of the abundance of the mouth the heart speaks. We have to diligently depend on God, but not bury our talent in the sand. We need to use our talent within the guidelines God has given us. We are not to seek after things of the world, but lean on the Lord, trust God for the victory. Sometimes we will have obstacles along the way, but sometimes the obstacles are really victories that God has prepared for us.

Matthew 18:1-14 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me. But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes! If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire. Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven. For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost. What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.”

Who is the greatest? The humble little child. God values humility.

Daniel 4:28-33 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of the twelve months he was walking about the royal palace of Babylon. The king spoke, saying, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?” While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven: “King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you! And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.” That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.

Everybody in our Bible study groaned when we read the passage where King Nebuchadnezzar stated that “I have built….by my mighty power…for the honor of my majesty.”

Oh, how prideful he was, and how he fell, until he came to his senses, then he honored God and gave God the glory.

Matthew 23:12 (Jesus speaking) And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

God hates a proud look. Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him. A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among the brethren.

Sometimes a person looks outwardly humble, but inwardly they are proud. Pride can sneak into a believer’s life very easily.

Pastor Jerry asked us to brainstorm ways that pride could sneak up on us, here is a partial list: complements that are not kept in check, self satisfaction, losing the focus on God, speaking humble words, but in our heart feeling prideful.

Another point was brought up about someone who claims to believe God in faith, but their faith level does not match up with what they are stating. Pastor Jerry pointed out that we can pray, “Lord I believe, help my unbelief.” But that we have to be honest where our level of faith is so that we can agree in faith with the people who are praying for us. That God knows where our faith is. We are not to make a false confession out of pride, not wanting to look like we don’t need help with our faith.

We are to esteem others as higher than ourselves, but at the same time that is not much esteem if we are viewing ourselves as part of the dregs of society. We also have to honestly realize who we are in Christ.

Sometimes self-abasement, which seems like humility, is really a prideful action. Sometimes it is motivated by a person not wanting to really change a behavior.

Some people, who are torn down by life, have low self-esteem, and lack self-confidence. By by the grace of God, He restores us, and one day these will not be problems we face. We are all on equal footing as God’s children.

We also have to realize that when we act in a servant role, when we put others ahead of us that does not diminish our standing, for example – Jesus washed the feet of the disciples.

Pastor Jerry surfed the web and came up with a quote from a person named Becker “If I could not experience the feeling of pride, then I would have no measure or motivation to move to the next higher level. It is not a sin, but rather a desirable condition if God is given His due.” “I am confident that if I let the Holy Spirit lead me, everything works out perfectly.” “…if you don’t experience an immense pride from being chosen by Him.”

We discussed this for awhile, and feelings were mixed about the idea of pride being  motivation to move. We decided that it was a motivator, but not the only one. But the true line is that we need to let the Holy Spirit lead us, that what we do, we do for the glory of God.

GIVING CREDIT TO GOD IS THE WHOLE KEY.

God raises up the lowly things (and we are lowly things before God comes into our lives) so we need to stay focused on who is doing what – namely God.

Pride can keep us down too. When we operate under pride about what WE can do, we limit what God does. For we do not step out in faith, and God does not then have the option to do incredible things through us. We are limited by the scope of our human imagination when we act in pride.

When we operate from pride, a love of ourself instead of giving glory to God we focus on the circumstance, the exterior accomplishment. We get a lot of help in doing this from the world which teaches us to depend on ourselves. TV shows, school, ads, books, magazines, all preach about the SELF. Satan uses the world system to try and convince us that we are god, and to replace God in our minds. This is the whole message of the new age philosophies, that we are god. That we need to work on our self-esteem. The media tells us what to desire and who to imitate, satan is using the media to undermine our value system. Then we are faced with peer pressure, peer approval, and there is a pride in having the esteem of one’s peers.

With all of this pressure on us, it is easy to cross over the line and degree by degree find ourselves where we didn’t want to be. Only by focusing on God, and God’s values can we free ourselves from this world system viewpoint.

This tactic is not new, satan has been using the same tactic since the beginning of time, starting with Adam and Eve, convincing Eve that if she ate of the fruit she would be as God, knowing good and evil. He played on her pride.

Isaiah 14:13-14 (talking about lucifer) For you have said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.”

Pastor Jerry suggested reading Genesis 3-5 to see satan’s working, how he tells Eve, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Then Pastor Jerry gave us some positive examples of relationship with God.

    From Pastor Jerry’s handout:

“Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:3-5 “I come to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.”

1 Corinthians 1:31Therefore as it is written let him who boast, boast in the LORD.

l Corinthians 10:12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.

Psalm 113:5-6…(5) Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high. (6) Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven and in the earth!

Pastor Jerry wrote on the handout, “We can be tempted to try and become like the people we see – or to act out in ways we think are appealing, that will win us the approval of others. The prideful person resents those who do not bow to him or applaud him. Who do not acknowledge them and pat them on their egos.”

    More from Pastor Jerry’s handout,

“Pride is that attitude of self-worship which causes a man or woman, a boy or a girl to think more highly of him or herself than he or she ought.

Mark 7:21-23 And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”

Luke 1:51 He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

More from the handout: “The mind of a proud man seeks to construct everything in his internal world to offer up continual adoration and praise to the self, to the ego. All a man’s accomplishments and achievements are marshalled before his own internal gaze, he views them with self satisfaction. If others seem to excel more, the proud man can find a way to belittle that person or find fault. Pride has many symptoms and features. The difficult thing about it is that it is so hard to see in yourself! Often the people who hate pride the most in others are those who are the proudest themself…”Pride is a sinful attempt to meet a deep emotional need that we have for significance.” Michael Fackerell on the Christian-faith.com web site www.wcie.net)

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

2 Corinthians 12:7  And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.”

Pastor Jerry pointed out that this time in reading the above he noticed the words ABUNDANCE OF REVELATIONS. Paul was receiving a lot of revelations from God, so God kept him humble by permitting satan to buffet him with a thorn in the flesh. Buffet means a continual pounding of things.

Someone pointed out that sometimes we don’t see the solution in our own minds, so we make a decision based on the ego and pride, a practical decision, thinking we know what has to be done. But it is not God’s plan for the situation. Sometimes the easiest way to do something is not what God is desiring. He knows the correct way to do something.

More from Pastor Jerry’s handout (Heather’s note, I love handouts)

Malachi 4:1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

Pride will become nothing but hay and stubble, and be destroyed.

James 4:6  God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

Psalm 138:6 Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly; but the proud he knoweth far off.

Jesus, although He is God, came to earth in a lowly human body.

    From Pastor Jerry’s handout:

You cannot maintain an attitude of pride and be close to the LORD.

One hardens their heart against God when we have pride.

We sin when we have false pride, it is an act of rebelion, and God says that when we sin we hate Him.

    From Pastor Jerry’s handout:

Matthew 6:1-2 Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men.

One thing that fuels pride is the desire to get the respect and honor of men or when one feels that they are being denied their due respect–they insulate themselves with pride…can people see themselves?

We decided that it is very difficult at times to detect pride in ourselves, for it is often hidden. We need to pray and ask God to let us know where we are out of line, where we have pride, and are not giving Him the glory.

Galatians 5:19-26 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Ephesians 5:3 For a greedy person is an idolater, worshipping the things of this world.

1 Corinthians 6:19  Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

Do we put pride in our temple? That is like the abomination of desolation.

From Pastor Jerry’s handout: “The antichrist sits in the temple convincing himself that he is god. The body is described as the temple of GOD the HOLY SPIRIT…so GOD should be seated on the throne of our hearts-but we often replace HIM and in HIS place put ourselves – we place the desires that have possessed us, the wants that have overtaken us above the commands of GOD-that which was successfully appealed to us we elevate above the Will of GOD  The world flatters us – it tells us to do it our way – it says we deserve the best.

Justification – the saved are saved, not because of their own righteousness, but because they are accepted by God as righteous… Feel good about yourself. Without becoming a victim of “the pride of life.” 1 John 2:15

Positive: 1 Peter 5:5-7 Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.”

This was an excellent Bible study. I put it in its entirety even though it was long because there seemed no good place to break it into two parts. Before we knew it, it was after 3 in the afternoon. Usually our studies do not go that long, but what a meaty topic. I am so blessed to have sat under this teaching, and it is convicting. It always amazes me, as we learn more about God and grow closer to Him, how we find areas in our lives that need working on, and pride is one of those which can sneak in in so many ways.

    I hope this blessed you.

  • My friend, Julie Evans, wrote a poem that she said she got after hearing my teaching last night. It blessed me to know that it reached others. Here is the poem.

There’s A Monster In This House

    by Julie Evans

I was right when I was a kid

I knew there was a monster

    in my house

    I knew it wasn’t safe.

    The people in charge,

    aka my parents,

    couldn’t see the monster

    because he had cleverly

    gotten inside of them.

    I spent more time

    placating that monster

    than I spent

    being a kid

    or than I spent

    growing up.

    I was the peacekeeper.

    It sounds fantastic

    and important

    but it’s crippling

    and horrible.

    The monster that upset

    the peace

    doesn’t get moved

    he gets fed and

    put to bed.

    I would bounce

    from one trauma

    to another

    like a medic,

    but I was only

    four feet tall.

    inspired by Heather’s teaching February 7, 2007

Julie said this poem was a response to Pastor Ted’s Sunday sermon.

    It’s Time To Move

    by Julie Evans

And today the Word of God

    went forth and that Word

    contained instructions.

It said get ready to move,

    leave your nets behind

    and come follow Me.

    It’s time to move

    from a critical spirit

    to a spirit of compassion

    It’s time to move

    from doubt to faith

    from sickness to healing

from the natural to the supernatural.

What you may thought was your occupation

may just have been what occupied your time

    up until now.

You are no longer who you were

so you no longer are to do what you have been doing.

    You’ve been changed

    You’ve been called from something

    and into something new.

    You’ve been given the keys

    to the Kingdom

but do you know where they are

and do you know what they are.

    Let me remind you.

    The keys to Kingdom

    are faith in Christ

    and knowledge of Christ.

It’s time to use the keys

to go set the captives free

to go and heal the sick

    to speak freedom and hope

    to those in need.

It’s time to trust that provision

    will not run out

that weapons do not have authority

    to harm you

    and know deep inside yourself

that God is who He said He is

and will do what He said

    He will do.

    It’s time to move

to get rid of all that junk

that isn’t you and isn’t yours

and doesn’t serve you or Him or me

as we step up, step out and step into power and authority.

    It’s time to move

    Leave your debts

    your customs

    and your rituals

    behind.

    And enter in

    be a partaker

    of His Divine Nature

    which is the Kingdom

    the Power

    and the Glory

    forever and ever.

    amen.

    Bible Study Notes for 2/7/07

Pastor Don often tells us to do a Bible study on some area of our lives that is giving us a challenge. I have been losing my peace too often lately. This study is a culling of notes from many sources, Pastor Don, Pastor Ted, Beth Moore, Jon Courson, and my own studies. Hoping it is helpful. I am open to other suggestions, because I don’t teach this until tomorrow, so let me know what you think!

    Peace

Galatians 5:22-23 (fruit of the Spirit).

Isaiah 9:6-7 Prince of Peace: THE UNCONTESTED PRINCIPLE OF TRUE PEACE IS THE RULE OF CHRIST. Kingdom rule, the Authority of Christ. True peace comes when I bow down to the authority of Christ.

PEACE IS NOT DEPENDENT ON CIRCUMSTANCES.

Our world could be in chaos and turmoil and we can still have peace in the midst of the turmoil. Turmoil is not the problem, but not having God in the right position in our lives is what causes the problem. Haven’t you had times where nothing is really wrong in your life and you still feel disquiet and a lack of peace? When we do not feel peace in our lives it is because we are not living under the authority of Christ. So often Peace and Joy are linked together and satan tries to rob us of both of these. Isaiah 66:12-13-Peace like a river, not a pond. It isn’t a boring peace, but peace in the midst of all that is going on around in our lives.

PEACE IS ALWAYS ASSOCIATED WITH AUTHORITY.

An increase in peace is accompanied by an increase in Christ’s authority.

Isaiah 9:7 – Don’t we all want a little peace with no end?

WE NEED TO REMEMBER WHEN WE BOW DOWN TO CHRIST that He is always FOR us, not AGAINST us. His commandments are for our own good, not to take away all of our fun.

WE ALSO HAVE TO REALIZE THAT IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT CREATING PEACEFUL CIRCUMSTANCES IN OUR LIVES.

It is all about the applied authority of Christ. God shows us so much about this in His Word. Look at the history of the Hebrews, when they were at peace, they were under God’s authority, when they disobeyed God, they lost their peace.

COLOSSIANS 3:15Let the peace of God rule in your hearts…”

When I know Him and submit to His authority, to that extent there will be peace in my heart.

I Thes. 5:23And now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you both completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

John 14:27 We have His peace if we abide in Him.

THE AREAS IN OUR LIVES THAT WE ARE NOT IN PEACE ABOUT is where we are not functioning under God’s authority in that area. Usually it is an issue of control, and we want to be the ones in control.

Isaiah 9:6 – on His shoulders (plural)

THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY SITUATION, isn’t it great that He has two shoulders. He can handle it and reconcile the division. HE DOES NOT COME TO TAKE SIDES, HE COMES TO TAKE OVER.

Prayer of St. Francis – Lord make me an instrument of your peace.

I WANT TO BE A GENUINE INSTRUMENT OF GOD’S PEACE.

In order to do that, I have to possess His peace. I can’t be an instrument of something I don’t possess. Where do we need to be His instruments of peace, in our homes, families, workplace, our church, friendships, marriages, and children?

Haven’t we all said at one time or another, if it wasn’t for ______ my walk with Christ would be perfect. I suspect Christ put that person in our lives to show us where we are still not bowing down to His authority and showing His peace. It is in these trying situations that we grow.

    CONTRAST TO PEACE:

Galatians 5:19-20 Some of these in the list are about idols in our lives but the others are relationship issues. Yet each of these works of the flesh lead to division, and that is satan’s grand plan for our lives, to cause division.

WITHOUT PEACE WE HAVE DISCORD (Think of being an out of tune instrument of God’s peace).

THINGS TO REALIZE ABOUT ATTAINING GOD’S PEACE

    (1) HOW ACTIVELY THE SINFUL NATURE RESISTS PEACE. So often we want to place the blame on satan, but it is not satan. There is no mention of satan in Galatians, it is all our choices to do these actions. We do know that satan will take advantage of the things that cause division. He will tempt us, wanting to make a fire and cause an explosion. But we are the ones to make a choice. For that will discredit Christ, and cause us to have division and discord. Romans 7:15-25. We are new creations in Christ, but it is so easy to slip back into our old sinful nature and habits. Am I going to follow the natural man or the Spiritual man. As Pastor Don says, which dog are you going to feed? IT ALL BEGINS WITH A SEED OF DISCORD, AND SATAN WILL USE THAT TO DIVIDE AND CONQUER.

Galatians 5:15 Bite & devour- When we are doing this it is usually over who has control and power in a situation. When we find our selves in such situations it is usually because God is showing us where we are not submitted to Him.

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacekeepers. But haven’t you noticed when God works on our lives that sometimes those around us aren’t being worked on in the same area. They resist the changes in us and we begin to realize that a particular relationship isn’t working. It is then that we need a loving and strong confrontation, and having to let the person realize that we are no longer playing by the same rules as before. Not always easy for me!!

    (2) THERE IS A VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PEACEMAKER AND A PEACEKEEPER.

A peacekeeper seeks to keep the peace at any cost, to not make waves, not rock the boat. Sometimes the cost of being a peacekeeper is very great. You may not speak the truth in love, you may let a situation keep going on, but what is sad is that this BRAND OF KEEPING THE PEACE IS A FALSE PEACE. Jeremiah 8:11 We are trying to keep a peace that isn’t there, to keep up a false image. Be sweet at church and in the public, but warring goes on behind the doors of our house.

DID YOU KNOW THAT BESIDES PEACE, THE WORD SHALOM ALSO MEANS HEALTH? To be a peacekeeper is an unhealthy way of dealing with a tough situation, and the peacekeeper need to bring this relationship and need to Christ. For peacekeepers seek to keep the monster down that is in contrast to a peacemaker who causes change in accord with God’s will.  Peacekeepers seek to keep peace at all costs, even to the expense of the peacekeeper. Think of some everyday instances of this – you have a boss who is doing something unethical and you are forced to lie for Him – do you lie and keep the job (keep the peace) or bring the facts out in public of find a more compatible job?

If the situation you are trying to peacekeep falls under those categories in Galatians 5, it is not true peace.

    NOW PEACEMAKERS

Being a peacemaker in the midst of chaos is work. Beth Moore taught on the video that the Greek word for peacemaker is EIRENOPOLOS –Eiren means peace opolos means maker, to make, do, expression, action, complete or continue.

Sometimes peace comes with a sword (we know that the Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God). God may have to cut us off from a relationship or an action that is stealing our peace. It may not be comfortable at the time, but later on reflection we will see the value of this.

We will have a peace of mind and a peace of heart, for God will bless us with this to help us overcome what He has cut off from us. It is a peace that passes all understanding.

So often when God is separating us from something in our lives we know it is the right thing to do. So often we know it is something we need separated from, but we do not want to obey him. It isn’t a knowledge problem but an obedience problem.

Peacemakers seek to do God’s will in a situation, even if the initial result is discomfort. But they want to obey God, and bring about God’s peace to the situation. This may be radically different from what the natural man would do in the situation. But we can trust that God has a better plan.

Beth then pointed out that the Greek word that is the opposite of Peacekeeper is PHILONEIKOS – PHILO – means friend and NEIKOS – means lover of contention. The opposite of a Peacekeeper is a lover of contention.

Draw a line in your mind and on one side is PEACEKEEPER, AND ON THE OTHER SIDE LOVER OF CONTENTION (PEACEMAKER WOULD BE IN THE MIDDLE). In your mind, ask God to show you where you are. I am more of a peacekeeper for I tend to shy away from confrontation.

What motivates a peacekeeper? There is usually fear and distrust. When we feel safe, we feel freer to fight and become a lover of contention. But when we are in fear, we try to hide behind a false peace. This is no way to live. So peacekeepers end up living from trial to trial in the midst of chaos and disorder. They are like Saul who Pastor Ted talked about, seeking the approval of man, not the approval of God. Psalm 62:8 Trust means confidence, to be bold, secure, feel safe. Refuge is a shelter, hope, trust, to be kept safe and protected from falsehood.

We need to take to Christ our fears and distrust. He knows what we are feeling. No matter the situation, like David, in the Psalms, we can bring it to God. A peacekeeper has to decide if they believe that God is bigger than their problem? Do we want to be swayed by fear and distrust? Do we want to let others guide our actions when they are in direct contrast to God’s will?

To be honest, there are times when I am a peacemaker and other times when I am a peacekeeper. God is slowly showing me a better way in some situations. Sometimes it takes stepping out in faith to make a harder choice that is outside of my comfort zone. But He is there with us every step of the way.

On the other end of the continuum is the Lover of Contention. What they love is to make another person miserable, to exert their control over a situation.  They want power, power to get you mad, powerful to control their environment. This is unbalanced power, power used for selfish purposes, not God’s purposes. To withhold, not give. To complain and envy others.

God has given us power to affect our environment, but His power is in accord to His will. Acts 1:8, 2 Cor. 4:7 The Power as God wanted it was to further His plans on the earth, not our selfish agendas.  For us to be filled with the Spirit, not filled with ourselves.

What causes a person to be a lover of contention? LACK OF DISCIPLINE. Undisciplined children grow up to be lovers of contention. The discipline has to be loving, godly discipline, not abuse. But in a way today our society is showing signs of this lack of discipline today, in the lawlessness that abounds. People have become lovers of themselves, not God. Idols and lack of obedience to God, are leading so many to places God did not intend.

Hebrews 12:11 When God sends correction in our lives it is his AGAPE love, remember Agape love is love in our own best interest, not necessarily what we want in our lives.

Ephesians 2: 14-16 Jesus is our peace, He can build walls and shatter walls, tear down and give authority. There is no way to have true peace without Christ.

Ephesians 2:18 Access means we are acceptable to God, and the assurance that He is favorable to us.

Philippians 4:6-7 Keep means to control and guard, protect by military guard, and help prevent invasion.

    Romans 15:13

Isaiah 26:3 Stayed, to lean to rest, support, uphold, refresh renew.

We need to pray to let Him take over, for then we will have peace.

  • Woohooo! I lost 4.8 pounds in the first week, so am inspired. Still can use your prayers though. I want to keep my focus. I prayed on the way home and asked for God’s help to remind me that this is an obedience to Him.

I am in the throes of writing a Bible study. Pastor Don asked me to teach Wednesday’s Bible study, so I decided to work on a topic that I struggle with at times, peace. I am pulling from a few Bible studies and my own notes, and I will share. My best resource on this is Beth Moore’s study on the fruit of the Spirit. Can use your prayers for this. I am typing it up and have to finish by today so I can practice.

  • Requesting your prayers and support. Last Tuesday I joined Weight Watchers as God is now dealing with me and weight. I struggle with this issue very much. I am certain a lot of it has to do with my past abuse, but God is showing me that I am a new creation in Christ Jesus, and that my past does not have to have such a pull on me.

Pastor Don and I have been talking about weight issues too, and he has pointed out that for my husband’s sake (Jim is also not good with his weight and health issues) that I have to be an example, to do the right thing, or how else can I speak to him about weight matters.

And, as my body is a temple of God, I need to take better care of this temple, so I am going to report to you every Monday if I stayed on program or not, and so far this week I have done well, not just the amount of points, but writing down all that I ate, and making sure to follow the nutritional guidelines and drinking most of my water.

Please keep me in prayer, in the past I have had success and then fled from that success. My current WW leader pointed out that that was the past and this is now. NOW I need to do something, so any help and encouragement is appreciated.

Thanks and I am happy to encourage you as well if you so desire. Sometimes facing a tough issue with friends is far easier than facing it alone and I count you as my friends. I should also point out that I realize that my highest accountability is to God and I do report to Him as well.

  • Covetousness Part Two by Pastor Ted

    Continued from the previous post.

Pastor Ted said that we think we live in the realm of reality, but when truth (God’s truth) touches reality, reality doesn’t exist. God is outside of our limited perspective of reality.

The anointing gives us power and authority to overcome, but if we don’t keep His covenant, He can choose not to bless us. How can God reward disobedience. (Heather’s note, if we do not set limits on our children’s behavior, and if we reward wrong actions, there is no incentive for our kids to grow into respectful, mature adults. A good example of kids gone wild is to watch a few minutes of the program where the nannies come into a household that is reduced to chaos because of kids that are out of control.)

Romans 11 talks about a remnant of God’s people who are preserved. Even within the Church there is a spiritually minded group of people, and a carnally minded group. Just attending church does not make one spiritual or sanctified or set apart. It also takes the choice to obey God, to be led by the Spirit, and to turn away from the carnal things that we are doing.

After looking at Achan, Pastor Ted directed us to 1 Samuel to study the life of Saul.

1 Samuel 15:1  Samuel also said to Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the LORD.

So often after a mountain top experience, there is the depths. After God speaks usually the next voice we hear is that of satan. Adam heard God speak and offer Him all the Garden for dominion, and then after that satan came and convinced Eve to disobey God. After Jesus was Baptized and the Spirit of the Lord descended like a dove on Him and He heard the words of His father calling Him beloved Son, Jesus was led to the wilderness to fast for 40 days and was tempted by satan.

1 Samuel 15:2-3 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”

This reminded Pastor Ted of the parable of the field where the farmer planted good seed, and satan came and planted tares. The farmer instructed his workers to let the two grow together and at harvest separate the wheat from the tares. God does that in our lives too. Sometimes He allows a wicked king like Amalek to rule for a season. That does not mean that God condones this king or what he is doing, God is just waiting for the right time and the right place to put an end to the evil rule.

Someone asked a question of Pastor Ted and he pointed out that when God gives us some message or teaching to share, we have to share it. To not share it can cause great harm not only to others but also to ourselves for our disobedience. They continued to try and figure out how to decide if a prophesy is true or not. Pastor Ted said that a true prophesy edifies and comforts. That does not mean that the truth of the prophesy doesn’t hurt or cause pain, but the end result will be spiritual growth in the person. If a person tells a false prophesy it will not edify the person and can lead to pain, destruction, hurt.

Of course our human nature does not always want to hear what God is speaking to us. Sometimes the Pastor speaks from the pulpit and it seems that he is reading a laundry list of our sins, and speaking to something we have to deal with in ourselves. We might get ticked off at what is said. But our heart knows that it is the truth that we need to hear. Sometimes we don’t want, with our minds, to hear the truth. We need to stifle that Babylonian nature in ourselves that wants the fleshly pride, and to focus on the truth of God, to be changed by God.

The natural man wants to be liked by many. So often the prophets of the children of Israel were not treated well by the nation of Israel. They did not want to hear the truth.

Samuel told Saul what God wanted Him to do, but Saul did not listen to God. Saul wanted to do what he wanted to do, and to be liked by the people so we are going to see Saul disobey God’s instructions. (Heather’s note, this disobedience will profoundly affect the nation of Israel in later time periods, and still does now).

Saul was anointed king. Pastor Ted pointed out that we are all kings and priests.

1 Samuel 15: 4-6 So Saul gathered the people together and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.

Samuel gathered his troops to defeat the enemy, but does not do ALL that God told him to do.

1 Samuel 15: 4-9 Then Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. And Saul attacked the Amalekites, from Havilah all the way to Shur, which is east of Egypt. He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.

What did Samuel tell Saul God wanted? To destroy all, women, children, men, the animals. Saul did not do that. He spared the King Agog and the best of the sheep, and other animals, anything that was good. But only destroyed what he despised and thought was worthless. God had real reasons for his instructions. (Heather’s note, so often we second guess God, thinking we know better, only to find out that we created more problems for ourself by our disobedience than we would have done by obedience). Saul will face serious repercussions for this act of disobedience.

1 Samuel 15:10-11 Now the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying, “I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments.” And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the LORD all night.

When we disobey God it grieves Him. So often we go by what looks good, feels good, sounds good, even if it is not God’s best for us. And when we disobey God, there is judgment. (Heather’s note, with my kids, when they do things that I know are not in their best interests, I too am grieved because I see further than they what the effects of such disobedience can have.)

1 Samuel 15: 12 So when Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul went to Carmel, and indeed, he set up a monument for himself; and he has gone on around, passed by, and gone down to Gilgal.”

Remember that Gilgal means wheel, so Saul is going another time around the wheel. And notice, Saul has set up a monument for HIMSELF. This is not giving God he glory.

1 Samuel 15: 13 Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed are you of the LORD! I have performed the commandment of the LORD.

Not only is there disobedience, but now Saul is lying. He didn’t perform the commandment of the LORD. He did some of what God instructed, but not the total. But the truth will come out.

1 Samuel 15: 14-15 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?” And Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, to sacrifice to the LORD your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.”

We are always ready with an excuse when we do not do God’s will. Remember Adam tried to blame God – “The woman YOU gave me….” and Eve blamed the serpent. Well Saul is blaming the people. Saul put the people’s opinion of himself over God’s opinion. So he then tries to fudge by saying He saved the sheep to sacrifice to God (Heather’s note, not true), and God does not want those sheep. He cares more about obedience than sacrifice.

1 Samuel 15:16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be quiet! And I will tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” And he said to him, “Speak on.”

Samuel and God were not taken in by Saul’s lies.

1 Samuel 15:17 So Samuel said, “When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the LORD anoint you king over Israel?

This follows Jesus’ teaching, in order to be great you have to be less. In order to rule you need to serve, to obey God.

1 Samuel 15:18-22 “Now the LORD sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ “Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, and do evil in the sight of the LORD?And Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. “But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.”

Pastor Ted said that we have to be careful in the church. We come and call what we do “worship.” A sacrifice of praise, but is it what our Holy God said He wanted. Is it really praise and worship, or do we still have things of the flesh that we are not giving up? Do we want that high position on the altar, the acclaim, the title? Are we sharing what God is telling us to share, or are we altering the message to please people? God will hold us accountable for our actions.

Malachi 3:8-9 Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘ In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings; you are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation.

The priests of Malachi’s time were offering damaged goods to God, animals who were blind or blemished, not the best. And the intent of the passage was not being cursed, but to “curse with a curse.” We will be judged if we offer up blemished sacrifices.

Pastor Ted pointed out that no two people in Church are at the same place in spiritual development. No two people have the same revelation of everything. God is revealing more and more to His people as they come in line with His will. (Heather’s note, just like we feed our babies milk, then go on to semisolid food, and finally real meat. God will give us what we can comprehend at the point that we are in our spiritual walk.)

We need to seek the face of God. The more Word we get into us, the more God will reveal to us. The Word is eternal. To know Him is what will help us to make proper choices.  Power and Authority are given to those who know Him. We can’t get power and authority by our faith, but it is the faith of Christ, the leading of the Spirit, that gives us power and authority.

1 Samuel 15:23 For rebelion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king.”

God takes our rebelion seriously, calling it as serious as witchcraft and idolatry. When God gives us the truth, the truth sets us free. If we reject the truth, we are not free, and we lose power and authority and position. Rejecting God’s Word is rejecting God.

1 Samuel 15:24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.

God does not want our excuses, we need to fear God, not what others think our say. Our allegiance is to God and God alone, other people’s opinions are not as important as what God thinks. Saul is doing what many of us do when caught in a sin, apologize, but that does not mean that he has repented, as we will see in later verses.

1 Samuel 15:25 “Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD.”

Saul was not concerned with true worship of God, but rather appearances. he wanted Samuel to come with him so that the people thought all was well.

1 Samuel 15: 26-28 But Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you, for you have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.” And as Samuel turned around to go away, Saul seized the edge of his robe, and it tore. So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.

God read Saul’s heart, and knew that there was not true repentance. The covering God provided for Saul was torn away from him because of disobedience.

1 Samuel 15:30 Then he said, “I have sinned; yet honor me now, please, before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD your God.”

Hear Saul’s pride shows. And notice that Saul is not worshipping “His” God, but now it is “Your God”. This just goes to show how far Saul has stepped from God.

1 Samuel 15:31 So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul worshiped the LORD.

    Was it sincere worship? No.

1 Samuel 15:32-35 Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of the Amalekites here to me.” So Agag came to him cautiously. And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.” But Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house at Gibeah of Saul. And Samuel went no more to see Saul until the day of his death. Nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul, and the LORD regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.

Agag felt that he was safe from God, because his life was spared, but Samuel carried out God’s instructions. And notice that Samuel mourned for Saul. It does sadden us when people turn their backs on God.

Pastor Ted continued the same teaching this past Friday, and I will share that teaching with you tomorrow.

    Have a blessed night!

  • Covetousness by Pastor Ted

This Bible study was given January 26.

What is the definition of Covetousness – envy, desire, jealousy, wanting what is not yours. We do not always realize that it is a sin when we are coveting, but coveting is a sin.
There are good kinds of coveting like wanting a deeper relationship with God.
Bad coveting is wanting the things of the world or things that God did not desire for you.

In the church we can covet another person’s spiritual gift, a title, a position, etc.

Covetousness is also idolatry, for we set before God things that we desire.

Ezekiel 14:4-5 Therefore speak to them and say to them, “Thus says the LORD God: “Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the LORD will answer him who comes according to the multitude of his idols, that I may seize the house of Israel, because they are all estranged from Me by their idols.”

God will give us the desires of our heart, but not all the desires of our heart are God’s desires. Sometimes God will allow our lust, but we will then block blessings from Him into our lives. God looks at the intent of our heart. Like a good parent, sometimes God will let us learn from our mistakes, for when we put idols up in our hearts instead of God, we will stumble and fall. (Heather’s note: Beth Moore one time said that she prays that God will place godly desires into her heart, so that she does not choose desires that are not God’s best for her. She also pointed out that things that are innocuous to some, can be sinful for others. Ravi Zacharias stated in last week’s radio broadcast that God wants us to have fun, but if what we call fun takes us away from our ultimate goal in life than it is not good for us to pursue that even if it is not a sinful pleasure.).

Then Pastor Ted took us to Joshua 7 and we looked at the battle for Ai. (Heather’s note: Ai means “heap of ruins” and when we covet things that are not godly, they are heaps of ruins, and will end up ruining us).

Joshua 7:1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took the accursed things; so that the anger of the LORD burned against the children of Israel.

A bit of history, Joshua went to Jericho and followed God’s instructions regarding the conquering of the city. But one of God’s instructions to Joshua was to (Joshua 6) not take any of the accursed things from Jericho – the vessels of bronze, iron, silver, and gold would be brought into the temple. God told them that if any looting was done, and accursed items were brought into the camp, it would curse and trouble Israel. Well Achan disobeyed the clear instructions from God, for he coveted some of the “treasures” of Jericho.

Remember, God wants our love, and has told us that if we love Him we will keep His commandments. When we covet we do not keep God’s commandments.

Israel (the nation God chose and named) seems to have a cyclical history with God, of obeying His commands, disobeying, repenting, and being returned to favor and obedience of His commandments, then disobeying.. This mirrors the cyclical nature our lives in God too.

The cities Galilee and Gilgal both have the meaning of a wheel or a circle.

Well, Joshua sends spies out to look at Ai, and they come back and report that it should be easy to conquer Ai. (Heather’s note, Joshua did not ask God the method of attack, he picked the method himself – that was the first mistake, for perhaps God would have revealed the sin of Achan to Joshua before any lives were lost). They decided to send only three thousand men down to attack Ai. Thirty six Israelites were killed in this and they retreated. Joshua 7:6-7 Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads. And Joshua said, “Alas, Lord GOD, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all–to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan!

God then reveals to Joshua the reason for the defeat.

Joshua 7:10 So the LORD said to Joshua: “Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face?”

When something goes wrong we want to blame other people, to blame God. But we really should ask God what we should do, what we have done wrong.

Joshua 7:11 Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.

Pastor Ted pointed out that covetousness causes us to lie, steal, murder and hide. (Heather’s note, God wants us set apart from the things of the world, to take the stolen accursed items and mix them with our own possessions brings worldly things into sacred space – and God cannot bless that.)

Joshua 7:12-13 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction.Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you. Get up, sanctify the people, and say, “Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the LORD God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.

We cannot serve God when we have hidden sin. Everything hidden will come to light.

Joshua tells the people to assemble in the morning according to families and the Lord will show who has taken the accursed items. verse 15 Then it shall be that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.

Joshua 7:19 Now Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I beg you, give glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”

We cannot hide our sins from God, and as we continue to sin, others will find out.

Joshua 7:20-21  And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I have done: “When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”

As we learn more about Babylon we realize that it is confusion (remember the tower of Babel). He coveted the items and took them and hid them. This rebelion leads to death, and caused God’s covenant of protection to be removed from the whole nation. We do not sin in a vacuum.

How did Adam and Eve fall? disobedience. They coveted the tree of Knowledge. Ephesians 2 and 3 point out that we are all fallen, we are children of wrath, and disobedience causes it.

If we don’t overcome the nature of the world, it overcomes us. Nature can’t trust in nature. Nature deceives us, so we must overcome it. If we are desiring things in our natural mind, we need to be careful. Men begin to worship things and the creation, and then covet after them. We are to worship God, not the creation or created things. If we are coveting, we become like Achan (whose name means trouble and troubler), and trouble will follow.

We will see coveting in many places in the Bible. Haman coveted the things of the Jews in Esther for example.

In the battle Achan took things God told the Israelites to leave alone, and because of this act of coveting, the whole camp was judged. People died.

In the Body of Christ, when we take from Babylon the whole camp will be judged. And even today we see coveting. There are more than 450 denominations, people are coveting titles, position, honor, amounts of members, etc. We need to realize that we are One Body, and serve God.

Joshua 7:24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor.

Achor also means trouble. When we disobey God we bring trouble on ourselves and those around us in our camp (church, family, community, etc.). We don’t know the day or the hour, but we know that trouble will happen. Sometimes we do something against God and it seems that there are no immediate repercussions, but that does not mean that God doesn’t notice or that God won’t do something about it. He may wait until the time is right. (Heather’s note: Pastor Don often tells us that God’s lack of response does not mean that He won’t judge at a later date. We see this so often in the Old Testament where the people sin, and then they do not see the repercussions of their sins for a long time span. Sometimes God is waiting, wanting them to repent and change their ways. But sin does have repercussions).

Joshua 7:25-26 And Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day.” So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Anchor to this day.

A lot of concern was raised because not only Achan but his whole family was stoned and people thought that was an extreme punishment. But it was pointed out that the whole family knew about the illicit possessions, so they too were part of the problem. You don’t bury things in the middle of a tent without the rest of the people in the tent knowing about it. Any one of them could have stepped forward and told the truth.

Also there were thirty six other people killed because of this act of rebelion (and Pastor Ted firmly believes that those thirty six people killed in the battle might have harbored similar greed in their hearts). God is just.

But taken on a symbolic level, when we sanctify ourselves in Christ, we kill those parts of us that are not of Christ, those parts that are the flesh. We don’t just gently put them down, we take proactive measures to totally annihilate them. (Heather’s note – on a symbolic level rock and stones are symbols of Christ who is the chief cornerstone – when we throw Christ at our fleshly natures, our fleshly natures die).

Then Pastor Ted went on to talk about King Saul in 1 Samuel. I will write the rest of the study tomorrow.

Hoping you have a blessed day!

  • End Time Date Setting by Pastor Jerry Moore

Pastor Jerry Moore is visiting from California!!!!

A friend gave him a book suggestion Are You Rapture Ready? This book talks about all the possible rapture scenarios that have been taught, from Preterism (the rapture has already occurred) to Pretrib (rapture before the tribulation), midtrib (rapture in the middle of the tribulation) and posttrib (rapture after the tribulation).

He talked a bit about the history of some of the pretrib rapture theories, where the debunkers blame it on a woman named Margaret McDonald (who, when you look at her prophesy said nothing about the rapture) who prophesied and her prophesy was take up and expanded upon by John Darbey.

These are all new names to me, so I would want to read and research more on this.

A man named John Bray (spelling?) who offered money for finding entries about the rapture that predate Margaret McDonald. Twice he found documented evidence that talk about the rapture has happened at earlier and earlier dates.

Jesus talked about the end times events in Matthew 24-25 and many of the prophets such as Daniel, Ezekiel, Hosea, and others also talk about the end times. People look at current history and spend a lot of time setting dates for the end time.

Pastor Jerry shared a site that listed many of these end times predictions – find it funny that the Jehovah Witnesses hold the record for the most end times predictions. Here is a site with the listing of 220 dates of end times predictions.

While some of these entries seem funny, it is very dangerous to be setting these end times dates. (One thing that comes to mind is desensitization, when the real end times comes people will have heard about end times so often that they will brush off the real signs).

    Dangers of setting end times.

    1. Takes believers from believing by faith to believing by sight.
    2. Take hope away from the people.
    3. God’s word will be mocked and not believed by people.
    4. Distracts believers from doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Pastor Jerry pointed out another quote from the above site that end times daters forget.

“An untold number of people have tried to predict the Lord’s return by using elaborate timetables. Most date setters do not realize that mankind has not kept an unwavering record of time. Anyone wanting to chart for example 100BC to 2000AD would have to contend with  the fact that 46BC was 445 days long, there was no year 0BC and in 1582 we switched from Julian Years (360 days) to Gregorian (365 days). Because many prognosticators are not aware of all these errors, their math is immediately off by several years.

Several discussions cropped up regarding the End times events and who will be left on earth, how will they learn the truth, what lies are in place to explain the rapture.

Heather’s note, we can speculate, but I think it far more wise to keep my lamp filled with oil and do what God wants me to do now. He will take care of the end times events. Frankly, I plan to go out with the first group, and I do not think that we are destined to go through the tribulation. What we call tribulation now, is pretribulation, and is sure indicating that the signs of the times are coming true.

I wish you could have been at Bible study, Pastor Jerry played and sang so many old favorites that it was a blessing.

Hoping you have a great day!!!
