  • You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free part 2 by Pastor Don

    Continuing from Friday’s Bible study.

Romans 8:5-6 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

The peace of God that passes all understanding. So many believe that once we accept Jesus into our lives that everything will be chilled out and there will be no more problems, but that is not true. As we grow in Christ, we change, and that change affects our outlook. The world and it’s problems remain, but we are not as affected by it.

Today many pastors are trying to solve peace. Pastor Don marched in the 60′s, and things didn’t get better. We can’t do it. We can’t get the world market together to reach peace. Jesus even told his followers that there will not be peace, people will say, “Peace, peace” but there will be no peace. The church has lost its way, the function and purpose of church is salvation. Jesus told us to go out and make disciples of all the nations – he didn’t say, go out and make world peace. No one can participate in trustful peace until they are right with God. Jesus is our peace. We are to identify disciples and hold them to God’s commandments, then we will have peace.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

THAT is how we identify disciples, that they are led by the Holy Spirit and we see the fruit of the Spirit (love) in their lives.

Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

That’s what we have to rely on and trust, more and more that it is not just ourselves who receive the Spirit of adoption, but other people as well.

The next verse is the key that many do not know.

Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

The problem is that every saint and believer has not yielded themselves to verse 18. Yes, with physical suffering, God wants us to be healed, but He does not promise us a life without pain and suffering. When we yield to this and realize that our time on earth is but a twinkling of an eye, we then die to ourselves, and then the glory of God shines out through us. Others will detect this glory of God when we become yielded to Verse 18.

We need to get to the place as a believer that, when compared to the World, we see that the truth is in Jesus Christ who supplies all our needs. When He comes again, His politics will be the only political system. When we receive the truth about Jesus, obeying His commands we will see that abiding in Him is better than anything that the world can give us.

2 Corinthians 4:16-17 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

The truth is that this is a goal that is achievable, even when we don’t believe it. There is a place of faith that says, I can’t pay the bills, but I can get a job. God does not want us to be stupid. He wants us to walk in His wisdom on the earth.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Because of our relationship with Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we shall know the truth and the truth shall make us free. We are sons and daughters of God by adoption so we have the witness of the Spirit of God. When we are uncertain what step to take, the Spirit Himself will make intercession for us, and will reveal the truth to us in our behalf. There are times when the God of the universe will have someone else intercede for us when we are in need of prayer.

John 16 talks about the Holy Spirit, the Comforter who will reveal the truth to us as we need it. Our behavior will exhibit the truth, and by obeying the directives of the Holy Spirit we gain true liberty. Sometimes the directives do not make sense to our conscious mind.

John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

What a wonderful promise God gives us, that if we come to Jesus, He will not cast us out. That means anybody who comes to Him.

John 6:38-40 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up on the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up on the last day.

What a promise for us! That we stand with Him Spiritually and get to know Him. That He doesn’t cast away, when we call on the name of the Lord, we will be saved. We are not to judge who will or won’t be saved – God decides that, and we are going to be surprised about who is and who isn’t in Heaven.

Not everyone wants to spend eternity with God, and God gives us the desires of our heart. If we curse God, if we refuse the gift of salvation, it will grieve God, but He will honor that request. He gives us the free will to choose.

Someone asked when is the last time that we can make a choice, do some make a choice after death. Pastor Don pointed out that the safest thing we can do is make a choice before we die, that we do not know what happens after death.

Pastor Don’s brother legally died at one point, and then was revived. He came back describing how he was being dragged to the gates of hell, heard a voice saying, “Stop, he’s mine.” and then coming to in the hospital. He then chose a life that served God.

But we cannot count on everyone having such a choice once we die. We need to make our choice now. But God is a just judge, and it is He who will decide where a person spends eternity. If we are not judged by Jesus, if we reject Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins, we will stand before the great white throne of judgment and be judged by God. God will decide if the person goes to Heaven or is cast into the lake of fire based on how they obeyed His commands on earth.

We must encourage people to make their decision for Christ before death.

Hebrews 9:27 And it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment. The finality of death is that death is final. Some people are revived after being labeled “dead” but that is then not the real death, once we die in the physical we are dead.

We need to view this verse in context, so we read Hebrews 9:26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Jesus came 4,000 years after the creation of the earth to put away sin by sacrificing Himself.

Hebrews 9:27-28 And it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him, He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

The sacrifice of Jesus was the replacement for the Temple worship and yearly sacrifice of the Jews for the atonement of sin. When we accept His sacrifice for us, then our sins are covered by His shed blood eternally. We cannot remedy our sin by the determination of man. When we refuse to accept His sacrifice for us we come to spiritual death. We need to realize that there is just one life for us to make our decision. We are not going to be reincarnated, the end of our life – physical death, will lead to spiritual death if we do not accept the sacrifice of Jesus.

Acts 10:36-38 The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ–He is Lord of all–that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Jesus is a just judge, for He came down to earth and lived in an earthly body just like us, but without sinning once. He showed us that it was possible to live a life in the earth that does not have sin, so we have no excuse for the sins that we have committed.

We need to accept God at His word, that there is no other way but through accepting Jesus, we cannot know where God draws the line between salvation and the lake of fire at the great white throne judgment. Where the rubber meets the road here on earth is what choice we make- Do we accept Jesus?

The Bible covers history (former and future) for 7000 years, and we live on earth a mere 60-90 or so years. We are playing for eternity. We don’t know what happens in anyone elses’ eternity, we just know ours and that is determined by what choice we make now. If you haven’t chosen Jesus to be your Lord and savior, do not wait – now is a good time to ask Him to come into your life. I guarantee that if you do that you will not regret your decision and it would be a resolution with eternal consequences.

Romans 10:9-10 That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Hope you have a blessed New Year.

  • You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free by Pastor Don

This Bible study was prompted by a question someone asked Pastor Don over the lasagna we had for our pot luck lunch. I would give anything for you to be able to attend these studies. They are open to anyone who wants to attend, and what is blessed about them is that Pastor Don encourages questions and comments and input, so it is a real sharing of the Word of God.

Pastor Don pointed out that we should never stop growing in the Word, and that our need for the Word is never fulfilled. That is so true, each and every day there are new revelations.

John 8:32 And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.

This well known passage in the Bible does not mean what we have understood it to mean. In order to get the context of the passage we have to look at the previous verse.

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him. “If you abide in My word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”

We have to abide in His Word. How do we know that we are a disciple of Christ? We ABIDE (dwell, habitation, our life exercise), in the Word, not speaking doubt and unbelief. A follower working and living in Christ’s way.

A true disciple will not have a spirit of offense, will take correction if it is given in the love of Christ, and according to God’s Word. We are not to compromise the truth of God’s Word.

If we are honest with ourselves we realize that we do not correctly follow God’s Word 100% of the time, so we have to realize that if someone shows us where we are missing it in a loving and kind manner, we will begin to know the truth and gain freedom as verse 32 implies.

Notice that Jesus was not speaking to the Scribes and Pharisees in this passage, He was talking to Jewish believers. We have to realize that sometimes friends, unbelievers, and non-committed Christians may not hear us – hear the truth of God’s Word. It is much the same as a teenager who has selective hearing about something their parent has told them,

If you abide in the Word (verse 31), then you are in position to receive the truth (verse 32).

Verse 36 ties into it. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. When we abide in the Word, believe what Jesus says, living in that Word that you believe, then we will see that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. John 14:12-14 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also, and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, then the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus is our path, our direction, our road. He becomes our mode of operation. When we know Jesus and obey him then we are in position to experience true freedom. Jesus will reveal to you everything you need to know. When this truth is applied to each believer, then there is a chance for true freedom in all nations. Those who speak peace as the world perceives it will never see peace manifest, it can only manifest as believers choose to obey Christ, and the number of believers increase, then world peace is possible.

Today people have taken the word “freedom” and abused its meaning. Freedom in our society leads to anarchy. What people today want is freedom without responsibility, and that leads to chaos. Teenagers who claim “I just want to be free” are really saying that they want to do what they want to do without responsibility and the consequences of their actions.

We need to know the truth about our desire to be free. Sin is a consequence of chaos, confusion, bad decisions without responsibility. Very few people who commit a sin start out saying, “I know what I am doing, and the consequences of what I am doing.” Satan does not want to reveal the consequences. There is baggage with every sin, even sins that you think have not been observed by others.

Revelation of truth comes by knowing the foundational truths of God, then you can understand the creation of the universe, entropy, gravity, microevolution, etc. The way to know everything that gives you the greatest freedom is to know Him. To be really free we need to know the consequences, then we have the ability to choose with knowledge. And He will reveal to us what we need to know.

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

To those who are perishing, who don’t know the truth, they come to a conclusion so foreign to what most arrive at.

1 Corinthians 1:19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

If I abide in the Lord, consult what Jesus says, find the truth and the Word about a decision then I can make a wise decision. So many people act first without consulting God. They go to God after the fact, not before, and it invariably leads to trouble.

1 Corinthians 1:20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

The Pharisees were the politicians of the day, the scribes were the historians, the keeper of the Word. Jesus was debating with the scribes when he debates scripture. The Pharisees would ask the scribes what the Word says, they had the Word, read the Word, studied the Word, but missed the deeper revelation, and the deeper revelation begins with OBEDIENCE.

What does the Word say? Jesus pointed out that God desired mercy, not sacrifice. The scribes would look for sacrifice, but God wanted them to look for mercy,

The Word of God is truth. The Word is greater than science or politics. Politics can be a very prideful activity, thinking that it is a way to effectively change people without the Word of God. All we do in politics is control, change conditions. Now we are seeing an evolution of the world view, one world view, and there is a push to accept things that God has deemed unholy, such as same sex marriage, etc. They are taking wrong things and trying to force people to see them as right.

We can tell a true Christian, that we know Christ well enough because Christ has reminded me of my problems. If we know Christ, He reveals to us every problem we have, and the source of it within us, that it is not caused by someone else.

Notice in verse 20 that refers to the sacrifice of a spiritual person who knows the world. Even though a person claims to be a Christian, they need to be examined to see if they are obedient to God’s Word. There are a lot of people calling themselves “Christian” who do not believe the gospel or like the gospel. Who selectively choose what they will obey.

1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

We do not get our wisdom by the prevailing world view. The world view doesn’t offer salvation and make life better. Our wisdom does not seem wise to the World. Jesus is looking for people saved by faith, who have a hart to love him, a heart to believe the unbelievable. In essence the world sees us as crazy people.

It is late, so I am going to stop here and continue tomorrow, but I wanted to get a bit of the Bible study out for you.

Hoping you have a blessed night.

  • Building Bridges of Emotional History by Pastor Don

This was an incredible Bible study tonight. Sometimes Pastor Don touches on a topic that is something I am struggling with at the moment and he breaths a breath of fresh air into my life. This topic was brought up spur of the moment. I, one day, want to know the Bible so well that I too can teach spur of the moment.

You have heard about Friday Bible studies – our Wednesday night studies start out with praise and worship – sometimes a worship team, sometimes Joy plays keyboard and sings, other times others sing and praise. After we sing and praise God, Pastor Don brings forth the prayer requests and we pray for those who have called in prayer requests and any requests from those in attendance. Tonight one of our members spoke about a wonderful reunion with her son, who had been estranged for quite some time. Pastor Don had been counseling her on forgiveness, and over Christmas her obedience to God in the area of forgiveness led to a reconciliation that blessed us all to hear about it. Then someone asked a question about forgiveness and Pastor Don decided that this was the topic to teach on. I was so blessed by this teaching and  I pray that this also blesses you.

Pastor Don pointed out that besides our bodies, we are also made up of Spirit and Soul. Our soul is our mind, will, and emotions. People today have been trying to downplay willpower, but we need to develop willpower to obey God. Our will, will determine which direction we will go. And so often we operate by what we feel, but we have to be careful about feelings – we want to have feelings that are in line with the Holy Spirit.

Pastor Don then pointed out that the God has feelings, we are not to grieve the Holy Spirit, God told Moses he had to work up anger at these people (the Israelites), there is the joy of the Lord, and Jesus wept, etc.

When we become born again we want to plug our spirit in with the Holy Spirit so that our emotions are tied to what God feels. The problem we face is that our flesh man wants to be the boss, but we do not want to give in to the flesh, we want to be led by the Spirit.

But we need to be honest. Pastor Don asked us, haven’t you ever gotten so mad and you wanted to be mad, felt you were justified in the situation and wanted to hold onto your anger? Someone tells you to calm down (the Holy Spirit tells you to calm down), but we say, “I don’t want to calm down, I want to be furious. I have a RIGHT to be furious.”

We can’t have spiritual maturity when we are captives of our emotions. So often the Holy Spirit tells us to go right and our flesh says, “no, go left.”

We need to realize that nothing good dwells in our flesh, that left to ourselves we can act dumb and stupid and feel justified in doing so.

So often in our lives, when there is a break in a relationship, it generally starts out with a little upset that gets fanned into a great divide. Emotional breaks usually begin with small triggers and then build on the small triggers and over time it is off to the races. It then turns into a he said, she said situation.

Pastor Don told us about a couple who came to him for counseling – where their situation had escalated to a serious level, and when they finally sifted through the mess it turned out to be that both parties were over stressed. The whole episode could have been avoided if they had gone to the gym and worked out an hour.

The excess stress could have been worked out in the gym instead of being cast at another person. Pastor Don asked us when we are angry, if we ever go to the bathroom, look at the mirror and scream at ourselves? No, we take it out on someone else. He also pointed out that a burnt bridge can take years to repair, whereas working out the excess anger in the gym takes one hour.

It is natural to have tension in our lives, God gave us relationships and allows us to reach points of tension and stress because that is what allows us to build strength. With life comes problems. It is not Biblical or healthy to go through life without strife. resolution without conflict is mediocrity. You don’t plumb the depths of love without the pressure of life.

Luke 11:2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

To be emotionally sound we need to recognize that the only perfect place is in Heaven. We want that perfect Heaven manifested down here on Earth. Those who work with computers know that they are not perfect – they can lose data, shut down, need rebooting, etc. What is down here on earth is chaos. We get upset when we believe that the lie that we deserve peace and quiet and perfection here on earth. Most of the time life is a mess.

All of us go through life under great pressure, and often get upset when people or the Holy Spirit tells us to chill out. Jesus was able to live a life of ease under pressure. Is there a war going on in you? Heaven is a place of perfect peace and I want some of that perfect peace here on earth.

Pastor Don noted who was in the Bible study tonight and said, that all of us in this room have seen a two year old throwing a temper tantrum, watched them, and said, “uh, hah, a temper tantrum.” We did not let the child’s temper tantrum destroy our peace or get upset with it. We did not get caught up in the temper tantrum, throw ourselves down on the floor and join the child, etc. We just loved the child and let the temper tantrum run its course, so that the child could gain better control of himself.

That’s where Jesus wants us to get to, the point where the chaos of the world does not affect us any more than a two year old’s temper tantrum does. When the people get excited and upset around us, we don’t have to play. Of course we also have to be careful what we respond to those people. We don’t have to be pulled into their upset situation, but we can point out to them that we are there for them and care.

Bridges are built or destroyed depending on whether or not we ignore or agitate a situation. We want to keep the peace and tend to their needs. Jesus was calm when the disciples were upset that the children wanted to come to Him, he told the disciples to let the children come; when Blind Bartimaeus called out to him- the disciples wanted him to be quiet, but Jesus let him come to Him for healing; in tempest tossed storms Jesus was calm, and when he got angry at the Pharisees and moneychangers he calmly wove a whip to drive out the animals- his anger was under control.

Pastor Don told us never to get into an argument without carefully choosing the battlefield and the situation.

Luke 11:3 Give us day to day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

We need stuff in life, and we can trust God to provide. But in order for God’s provision to flow freely, we must forgive. We gain emotional stability by forgiving. Forgiveness is an act of the will. We will to forgive, but we may not feel forgiving. We are not expected to feel the forgiveness, we are just to forgive in obedience to God. As we forgive in obedience and keep doing so in obedience, our feelings will line up with the fact of the forgiveness.

Mark 11:25-26 And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Someone then commented (I love our Bible studies because Pastor Don encourages us to share and this was a wonderful night of sharing in such a way that it built on the study.) What if there is someone in my life that you forgive, and then they play you again, forcing themselves into your life, sending notes and letters and ultimately hurting you again. How often do you forgive them. Pastor Don mentioned that we forgive them in obedience to God, forgive them to God, but if they are going to keep hurting you, you do not have to bring them back into your life in a way that permits further hurting. For example, if you know someone who constantly steals from you when they are in your house, you forgive them, but you are not required to let them into your house so that they can steal again.

And notice that this follows Mark 11:23-24 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those thins he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

Notice, this passage says “SAY.” You do not have to feel forgiveness when you say it, just say it and your feelings will follow. Unforgiveness and bitterness is a huge mountain that needs to be cast into the sea. Believe by faith that you forgive the person, and believe then that God forgives you. You do not have to believe that you love the person who hurt you so, or believe that you care. Just believe that if I say, “I forgive you” that they are forgiven. You don’t have to like them, you don’t have to reconcile (unless the Holy Spirit directs you to), just love them as a brother and sister in Christ and be nice.

What you are saying is that I choose by faith not to punish you anymore. So often unforgiveness is our attempt to punish a person for what they have done to us. We are thinking that they hurt me and I want to hurt them back. Jesus pointed out that when we do this we are murderers, Matthew 5:21-24 You have hard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder,’ and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, “Raca!” shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, “You fool” shall be in danger of hellfire. Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go on your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”

Romans 12:19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath, for it is written ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.

If I make myself angry at you, if I focus on how mad I am at you, it does nothing to you. Most often the person is not aware or doesn’t care about how you feel. All you end up doing is committing suicide to your self. It hurts your physical and your spiritual self. And if you get mad at a person over a misunderstanding and decide not to talk with them, all they do is write you off as a nonentity. You do not end up hurting the other person with your unforgiveness, you just hurt yourself.

You have to make a decision to believe God. The word of God requires us to forgive, so we forgive. We are not to expect the other person to respond to our forgiveness, the forgiveness is not for their sake, but for God’s sake.

Until we let go of unforgiveness we can’t reap the benefits of what letting go of unforgiveness does. We forgive out of our heart, but it must be spoken with our mouths. God releases forgiveness with our mouths. Now, at times it is not appropriate to go directly to the person who hurt us (unless the Holy Spirit directs us to), so we can forgive them to God. Or if a person who hurt us has passed away, we can forgive them directly to God. (Heather’s note, I had to do that with my parents, for they were dead when I realized I was holding on to unforgiveness and bitterness). We forgive them to the Lord.

Pastor Don had us say, “I’ve been given a ministry of reconciliation.” We are to reconcile people back to God.

Someone mentioned being constantly hurt by a person. Pastor Don pointed out that when we get out of the mix, remove ourselves from the situation in forgiveness, then God can be a vindicator of the person. There is a fine line between faith and foolishness. We can’t put words into God’s mouth. The process of the heart catching up to what we are believing for is the message of faith. Often we have to forgive the person first without our hearts following, and then over time – sometimes years- we finally come to a point where we look back and realize that we really have forgiven the person.

Sometimes we mechanically walk the Christian walk, but we don’t have to feel it in our heart. The Word says we do it, so we do it. We don’t have to feel it, we don’t have to want to do it, we just have to obey.

The most difficult (Heather’s note, and I can attest to this) is when we hold God in unfaithfulness. Attributing blame to God for something He didn’t do. Someone on earth hurts us very much and we attribute the blame to God, figuring He should have stopped it, or that He doesn’t care. God is a safe place to vent anger. Most often when we are hurting we pray and don’t seem to get an answer from God, so we figure we can vent at Him because He doesn’t hear us anyway.

We then come to a point where we depend on our self (that wasn’t God’s plan for us). We end up in an emotional bondage and meltdown, but we brought it on ourselves, but want to attribute blame to someone, and God is good for that. He feels safe.

Someone pointed out that people often ask us, where was God when that terrible thing happened. Pastor Don said that when people who are parents ask him that question, he says to them, has anything bad ever happened to your child? Of course every child falls down and hurts their knees or gets hurt by another person or child. When they admit to that, you say, where were you when they were hurt? The truth is, unless you keep your child in a cage, they are going to get hurt in living their lives. We need to give them the freedom to grow and make mistakes and learn from their mistakes. God does that with us. Gravity works on earth, and we all come up with the consequences of gravity.

Luke 11:5-8 And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

We have to be persistent in action to heal that which is broken. Forgiveness is required, but we are not required to reconcile every relationship. Reconciled means to be rejoined to them, or reconciled to an understanding, acceptance and understanding that this is the way it is. Sometimes we have to communicate from a distance, sometimes we need to reconcile with God for that person and not contact them in person. It really depends on the situation. We are not required to reconcile face to face with an abusive person or put ourselves into danger to reconcile with a person.

Pastor Don said that when we forgive even those who have died, there is a reconciliation in the realm of the Spirit. Not like the TV shows about speaking with the dead want to indicate, but there is a host of angels surrounding us who will convey to God and to the person in spirit the forgiveness.

When we are persistent in reconciliation, it must happen. And then bridges can begin to rebuilt.

Luke 11:9-10 So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

Faith works in human relationships. When bridges are broken down, we ask God to renew the relationships. We often break down our bridges because of error, and most often, when the error is discovered it isn’t a good reason.

Pastor Don gave a personal example of how one day he stepped out of his office, thinking about the service that was about to happen, planning the last minute messages, and there were lots of people coming and going in the church lobby. He did not notice a person and come over to say “hi” and give her a hug, he just didn’t see her in the mix of people. She took offense, figured it was something personal he had against her, and started backbiting and spreading negative messages about Pastor Don. He asked her what the problem was, explained that he does not always notice everybody all the time, she still took offense and decided to leave the church. To help restore a relationship you need to find the root cause, and the cause is often linked to something vacant inside of ones self. This woman had a need in her for constant affirmation, a sense that without that she was not complete.

Pastor Don then pointed out that to rebuild a bridge you often have to pray for the person or find the lie that went into the situation that broke the bridge in the first place. We need to pray to help us see the person as God sees them.

One person in our group mentioned that she had to pray for her husband’s exwife, and when she would pray words would come out that were not particularly loving, so she ended up praying in tongues for her, then God would give her the interpretation of the prayer so that she could learn how God wanted her to pray for this woman.

Luke 11:17 But He knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation and a house divided against a house falls.

In hearts holding unforgiveness, our hearts are divided and we end up divided against ourselves. If we harbor unforgiveness which is the tool of the devil or bitterness, it turns and destroys us. God can’t elevate a person when unforgiveness and bitterness is in their hearts.

Some churches are emotionally broken. They judge their worship by the emotional performance, and while outside it seems so emotional and focused toward God, they are really hiding a rage within. Sometimes what we think is passion is really bitterness and rage and competition.

If we keep the word and keep asking, the Holy Spirit can work within us.

Luke 11:24 When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’

Once we speak words of forgiveness with our mouth, we can’t remain in unforgiveness, bitterness, resentment and anger. These are evil spirits (unforgiveness, bitterness, resentment, anger) who will come seeking to reenter the host (us). When we allow unforgiveness, resentment, bitterness and anger to rule us, it rots us out from the inside. It can lead to sickness and death. We can tell when we have fully succumbed to these feelings when we begin to think that the whole world is this way, that everyone is like that, and that people will constantly let us down.

People keep coming to church because it is a fertile place to hate people, to be vulnerable. People who want to hate people don’t go to bars to do so. In a bar, you chalk up behavior as a person being drunk. In church we see people in their sober state, and the real person is there.

God uses church to help us to learn to deal with other people and to treat them the way God wants us to treat them. We learn to love others because God says we must love others, not necessarily because we want to love them or because they deserve to be loved.

Luke 11:28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”

We are blessed when we are obedient and keep His Word, whether or not we feel like it.

Luke 11:29 And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say,, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.”

The announcement was made by Jonah, and the people had the choice to respond or not. We are wrong to forgive someone and expect them to give us a response back. If we forgive someone, we cannot expect them to extend forgiveness back to us, or respond in any way. The forgiving we do is for God, not for the other person.

Luke 11:33 No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light.

Our forgiveness shines like a light in the dark world. People will notice that there is a change in us. They will notice that we are always looking to fix bridges.

We have to get to that place where, no matter what the devil throws at us, we still work to fix bridges. When we decide to do that, expect that satan will try to pull us off course. The devil will try to cause division and trouble. But we will persist as bridge builders.

Luke 11:40-41But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done without leaving the others undone.

We cannot succumb to a spirit of offense. When a person offends you, we clean it out with forgiveness. Jesus in another passage talked about the Pharisees being clean on the outside, but dirty on the inside. Jesus wants us to focus on the inside, on the relationship with God, the important things like forgiveness and love. To give the other person the benefit of the doubt, to figure that they messed up and extend forgiveness. To not return evil for evil.

Someone mentioned that this is good for small things, but what about atrocities like the rape and murder of a child – how can the parent be expected to forgive. Pastor Don pointed out that they still need to forgive in order to gain liberty in Christ. That what helps is to see that the real perpetrator is satan acting through the person, not the person themselves. Also to know that when we step out of the way and forgive them, it leaves the field open for God to deal justice to the person. As long as we hold them in unforgiveness, we block God’s ability to act.

Luke 11:42 But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done without leaving the others undone.

We need to do the whole of the law, not just the external details like the Pharisees. God will see that justice is done. The devil doesn’t want us to forgive, he wants as much evil as possible in the earth. He knows he will end up in the lake of fire and wants others there with him. People want to take their pound of flesh, but God wants us to forgive.

Then God speaks of various woes.

Luke 12:4-7 And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear. Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you fear Him! Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows.

We forgive because God hates unforgiveness. God knows what is done to us and he knows what we do. We need to obey God.

Luke 12:22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.”

If we are not worrying about life, then we will not have bitterness, anger, unforgiveness. We won’t have to worry about what is happening to us, knowing that God has things in His control.

Luke 12:30-31 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.

This passage speaks for itself. Seek God, and the rest follows.

Luke 12:57-58 Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

When do we try to settle? on the way.

Luke 12:59 I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.

Pastor Don pointed out that if you are wronged, still do not judge another person, lest that person then complains to God about you and your judgment. If we are wrong, then God will be judging us on our wrong conclusions. If we step out of the way, God will rightly judge the situation. That is why it is never good to return evil for evil, but rather seek to do good.

Romans 12:19-21 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath, for it is written,Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord. Therefore, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

When we return good for evil we can sometimes turn the situation around, or if that is not possible it does confuse the person who is doing evil. A hot coal burns and eats their mind, causing confusion. They cannot understand why you would do good when they have done evil. In some circumstances it can even lead to reconciliation. It is like killing with kindness.

Praying that we can all cultivate forgiveness in our lives, what a great goal for the New Year.

    Have a blessed day!

  • Ezekiel’s prophesies and today’s news part 3 by Pastor Don

I found my notebook – losing one would be devastating to me because the notes in them are priceless. One day I should go back and start writing out notes that I took before I started Xanga. There is so much knowledge to share.

I was blessed to receive your Christmas greetings. My oldest son corrected me and said it should be 12 fish for Christmas – one for each of the apostles, but my husband has also heard 7 fish. Whatever, a fishy Christmas was quite fun.

So, now that things have settled down somewhat, I thought I would share last Friday’s Bible study with you. It is a continuation of Ezekiel’s Prophesies and comparing them to events of today and how the world seems to be shaping up. In my private studies right now I am using Kay Arthur’s precept ministries study on Daniel – I do it a bit slower because it is a personal study, not part of a group, and I am so blessed to see how much the prophets are in agreement. I think I may continue in my personal studies this year doing the prophets. Don’t worry, I won’t abandon the Israelites in the wilderness, we will still do that, as I am learning so much following their path through the wilderness. I would love to be able to spend hours and hours and hours studying.

If you haven’t read the previous two Bible studies on Ezekiel, here are the links for them:

    Part One and Part Two

Pastor Don pointed out that he forgot to mention the last time that the East Germans also helped Iran with their nuclear supplies.

People try to say that the Bible is not trustworthy, but the proof of the scripture is that prophesy is unfolding right in front of our eyes. We don’t have to give our opinion about why we believe the Bible, we just have to show that the Bible has prophesied thousands of years ago events that are unfolding today.

Pastor Don pointed out that we are so fleshly in our nature that we want a word from God every moment, for every decision. But the prophets may have heard a word from God only once every 40 or 50 years, and they held true to that one word of God until they heard the next instruction from God.

Before going into Ezekiel 40, Pastor Don did a quick review of the end of Ezekiel 39, because Ezekiel 39 leads to 40. (In a previous study, Pastor Don pointed out that the Chapter numbers were not in the original text, they were inserted to help people find passages quickly, but often they are arbitrarily labeled and that the passages of the end of one chapter often are connected to the ones in the next chapter.)

Ezekiel 39:21 I will set My glory among the nations; all the nations shall see My judgment which I have executed, and My hand which I have laid on them.

This passage can only occur today – “all the nations shall see…” Only today is that possible with news shows like CNBC, CNN, etc. If you look at other passages in the Old Testament you see that all the nations HEAR, or SHALL BE TOLD, but now all shall SEE.

Ezekiel 39 talks about a horrific power that is brought down on the people who come against Jerusalem. It talks about burying corpses for 7 months, and by combining this chapter with Zechariah 14 which talks about the same incident, it seems to be nuclear in nature. (see previous two studies for more details on this) There are natural aspects of these events, but people will see it as the hand of God.

Ezekiel 39: 23-24 The Gentiles shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity; because they were unfaithful to Me, therefore I hid My face from them. I gave them into the hand of their enemies, and they all fell by the sword. According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions I have dealt with them, and hidden My face from them.

This is important to notice because there is a dangerous teaching that is going on in some of the Christian circles – replacement theology, which states that since the Jews did not believe in Jesus when He was alive on the earth, they have forfeited their place in the Kingdom forever and that the gentiles have taken over that place. This is not what God teaches or what is shown in the prophesies. God clearly points out that he hid the revelation from the Jews for a time being because of their transgressions. This made a way for us gentiles to get into the kingdom. But there is still a nation of Israel, and God will not abandon it for His Name’s sake. His promises are forever, He would not change His mind and go against His promises.

Ezekiel 39:25 Therefore thus says the LORD GOD: “Now I will bring back the captives of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name–

In this part of prophetic wisdom has happened, God will gather the Nation Israel from all the nations where he SENT THEM, planted them during their captivity. (Heather’s note, remember in Genesis where God gave Jacob a new name – Israel. And then after that God would call Jacob/Israel according to his actions – Jacob if he was acting in a fleshly manner and Israel if he was acting in a Godly manner.) Notice in this verse that God is bringing back the captives of Jacob (fleshly Israel) and then later Israel (when the nation is acting in a Godly fashion).

Pastor Don mentioned that when he was a child if his mom called him, “Donald, come in here” he would come in gladly. But if his mom called, “Donald Eugene..” with the emphasis on Eugene he knew that it wasn’t good. That there would be repercussions for some transgression. In a way it is similar to how God would use Israel and Jacob, letting the people know if He was pleased or not.

So in verse 25 – the captives of Jacob were the descendants of Israel who were fleshly, and they left in the same way that Jacob left after he stole the birthright from his brother Esau. He feared persecution and destruction at the hand of Esau.

Pastor Don asked if Jacob’s father knew about the prophesy before Jacob was born, and the answer was yes, there would be no way that Jacob would have gotten the name that meant “heel snatcher” without the father knowing. Jacob would leave his family and flee persecution, but come back with a bride.

Today this passage hasn’t been fulfilled, because ALL the Jews in the world have not returned to Jerusalem, some are still staying in wonderful comfortable places like New York City and Miami do not desire to return to Israel. But there is a good chance that at some point, something will happen that will shake up their comfortable lives and cause a mass movement towards Israel.

He also pointed out that in Chapters 38 and 39 there is no mention of the United States. Israel will be surrounded by the hostile nations like Magog. There have been failed attempts to resurrect Babylon on the old site. This will not be happen.

America is on the brink of making a big mistake in Iraq, if they do the same thing that they did in Vietnam, pick up and leave. If we abandon Iraq, and do nothing to stop the destructive nuclear capacity of Iran and radical Islam taking Iraq, within our lifespan the forces of the north in alliance with Iran and Persia will attack Israel. And we will see terrorist outbreaks in our country, for such an abandonment will be perceived as a sign of weakness.

Our country is losing the values of God that it was founded in, and becoming weaker in influencing the world. For example, in New Jersey the courts, which are not the lawmakers, insisted that a law be made regarding same sex unions. There are people who are starting to try and convince the world that the Holocaust did not occur, they don’t want people to have empathy for Jewish people. And to say that their claim to the land of Israel isn’t valid because they perpetuated a lie to gain the land. A Jewish rabbi was shaking the hand of an Iranian Mulah, and agreeing that there should be no special treatment for Jews, and speaking against Zionism. We are asleep at the helm, afraid. There is a movement, even from the Catholic church, to try and unite the world’s religions.

Tolerance and compromise are the bywords of the devil. Tolerance today has the added meaning of people wanting you to accept that what is being said as absolutely true, and compromising values that are God ordained puts us in direct disobedience to God. The real definition of tolerance has nothing to do with accepting values as true, just accepting that people have the right to have differing views. If you don’t stand for something, you bow to everything. We, who believe and obey God’s Word, are part of a remnant.

If we are awake, we are to prepare people for the coming of the King of Kings. Our strength is not in politics, but in understanding that we are in the last days. We need to study to show ourselves approved, because we have to stand in the last terrible day.

It is important to ask ourselves, how are we using our time? Are we using it for the gratification of ourselves or are we using it wisely? If we use it wisely, we can hasten the coming of the Lord.

Pastor Don mentioned the children’s song, “This little light of mine…” Little lights do not shine much, but we must see ourselves as great lights – moons reflecting the Sun’s light. The sun gives off a lot of light.

Compelled by coming events, we have to be willing to resist rejection and still show God’s light to the world.

Ezekiel 39:26-28 after they have born their shame, and all their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, when they dwelt safely in their own land and no one made them afraid. When I have brought them back from the peoples gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and I am hallowed in them in the sight of many nations, then they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who sent them into captivity among the nations, but also brought them back to their land, and left none of them captive any longer.

How many of them are left out of their land in the end times? NONE. This has not happened yet, but will in the last days. Still today there are many scattered abroad.

Ezekiel 39:29 ‘And I will not hide My face from them anymore, for I shall have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel’, says the Lord GOD.

Notice the words: SHALL HAVE – this is a powerful prophesy. It will take a calamity, disaster like never before has happened, the perpetrators of evil will know their demise, and out of it, God will pour out His Spirit on the nation of Israel. (Heather’s note – the nation of Israel is not permanently abandoned by God like the replacement theologists are saying). Out of this, will emerge Chapter 40.

Ezekiel 40:1 In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was captured, on the very same day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and He too me there.

Pastor Don asked – where is there? It is a future vision of the New Jerusalem and Temple.

Ezekiel 40:2-3 In the visions of God, He took me into the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain; on it toward the south was something like the structure of a city. He took me there, and behold, there was a man whose appearance was like the appearance of bronze, He had a line of flax and a measuring rod in his hand, and he stood in the gateway.

A cubit was a measurement from t he elbow to the tip of the middle finger – and the cubit measurement was calculated using the measurements from the king.

Ezekiel 40:16 There were beveled window frames in the gate chambers and in their intervening archways on the inside of the gateway all around, and likewise in the vestibule. There were windows all around on the inside. And on each gatepost were palm trees.

Ezekiel 40:31 Its archways faced the outer court, palm trees were on its gateposts, and going up to it were eight steps.

Ezekiel 40:37 Its gateposts faced the outercourt, palm trees were on its gateposts on this side and on that side, and going up to it were eight steps.

Notice, in this new temple is 8 steps, not the seven steps of the old temple. That is because it is a new temple in the new Jerusalem. Pastor Don said that years ago he taught on palm trees (I have to find a copy of that teaching) but apparently the punch line was that today when we raise our hands (palms of praise) in holy praise we are like palm trees.

Ezekiel 40:46 The chamber which faces north is for the priests who have charge of the altar; those are the sons of Zadok, from the sons of Levi, who come near the LORD to minister to Him.

Ezekiel 41:16-19 their doorposts and the beveled window frames. And the galleries all around their three stories opposite the threshold were paneled with wood from the ground to the windows-the windows were covered from the space above the door, even to the inner room, as well as outside, and on every wall around, inside and outside by measure. And it was made with cherubim and palm trees, a palm tree between cherub and cherub. Each cherub had two faces, so that the face of a man was toward a palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion toward a palm tree on the other side; thus it was made throughout the temple all around.

    Palms of praise,

Ezekiel 4l:21 The doorposts of the temple were square, as was the front of the sanctuary; their appearance was similar.

Ezekiel 42 & 43 give further descriptions of the temple.

Ezekiel 43:10-12 Son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities; and let them measure the pattern. And if they are ashamed of all that they have done, make it known to them the design of the temple and its arrangement, its exits and its entrances, its entire design and all its ordinances, all its forms and all its laws. Write it down in their sight, so that they may keep its whole design and all its ordinances, and perform them. This is the law of the temple: The whole area surrounding the mountaintop is most holy. Behold, this is the law of the temple.

We were told to underline in verse 12: “The law of the temple.”

Ezekiel 43:18 And He said to me, “Son of man, thus says the Lord GOD; ‘These are the ordinances for the altar on the day when it is made, for sacrificing burnt offerings on it, and for sprinkling blood on it.

Ordinances on how the temple is to be used.

Ezekiel 43:27 When these days are over it shall be on the eighth day and thereafter, that the priests shall offer your burnt offerings and your peace offerings on the altar, and I will accept you,’ says the Lord GOD.

Another reference to the 8th day. Does it stop on the 8th day? No – for it says THEREAFTER. And also God points out that He accepts the Israelites.

Ezekiel 44:1-2 Then He brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary which faces toward the east, but it was shut. And the LORD said to me, “This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter by it, because the LORD God of Israel has entered by it, therefore it shall be shut.

If you go to Israel you will see that the Western Gate is shut and sealed. The Muslims were trying to prevent this prophesy from occurring. To further make it harder, they made the area right up to the wall and in front of the Western wall into a cemetery. They did this so that when the Messiah comes, because He is a priest, He would not want to walk through the cemetery and be around the dead, so He would not be able to enter by this gate. In the natural this makes sense, but we know something the Muslims don’t know. The dead in Christ will rise first – so when Jesus comes again, there won’t be any bodies in that cemetery!

Pastor Don also mentioned that we must pray for the nominal Christians and nominal Muslims, that they may know the truth about God. The nominal Muslims do not know the Koran. In the Koran it is pointed out that Jews and Gentiles are to be given every opportunity to convert and if they refuse, they are to be put into slavery or killed.

Just like in France, we are now beginning to see the effects of what happens when a Muslim community increases in size in our country and begins to take over government positions. At some point in time we will find that our ability to worship as Christians will be severely curtailed. We are also seeing problems emerge in parts of England and Holland.

Chapter 44:3-4 As for the prince, because he is the prince, he may sit in it to eat bread before the LORD; he shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gateway, and go out the same way. Also He brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple; so I looked, and behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD; and I fell on my face.

As Ezekiel 34:24 says And I, the LORD, will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken.

Could be David that is the prince.

Ezekiel 44:5 And the LORD said to me, “Son of man, mark well, see with your eyes and hear with your ears, all that I say to you concerning all the ordinances of the house of the LORD and all its laws. Mark well who may enter the house and all who go out from the sanctuary.

This temple is not built yet, but it will be in existence in the Millennial reign, Revelation 20.

We haven’t had the events of Chapter 38 – the great earthquake yet.

There is still debate about the exact location of the Temple, that it may not be what is today called the Temple mound. Inside the dome is a large granite rock that some say is the rock that  Abraham was to sacrifice Isaac on, and is also considered the rock that Mohammed stood on. The dimensions of this rock are too big to fit in the holy of holies, and no where in the Old Testament is such a big rock mentioned in connection with the Temple. There will be an antichrist who will come on the scene and bring a peace agreement – perhaps pointing out a site that is 1000 feet away from the Dome of the rock. He may point out that the western wall (wailing wall) is really the eastern wall.

We discussed some more questions and issues and Pastor Don pointed out that, Prophesy that is not mixed with faith is worthless.

Our Bible study needs another hour or two to fully develop these topics. There is so much to share, but maybe these notes will help in your personal studies.

Hoping you have a blessed day.

  • I am slowly getting to your sites, but wanted to share how the fish dinner went. Remember, my middle son wanted 7 fish, we ended up with about 10 – not all are technically fish.

It was a very fun meal, something we want to do again. It may be a new tradition in our house. I picked up fish from Adam’s, and got crusted fish of different varieties, one fillet each. They all baked at about the same time and temperature which made it easy.

    1. Shrimp appetizer
    2. Crab cakes.
    3. Caribbean crusted snapper.
    4. Mediterranean crusted salmon
    5. Salsa crusted Mahi with roasted citron and blackbeans
    6. Herb crusted cod
7& 8  Rolled & stuffed sole with  scallop and crab stuffing.
    9. Cornbread crusted catfish
    10. Lemon pepper crusted cod (we counted that as a separate fish because of the different coating)

Hey, we can make the rules. Had I been smart and gotten canned sardines and pickled herring we would have had 12.

We had a lot of laughs. My husband cut each fillet into five pieces and we had a reading of the name of the fish and a taste test. We all got one or two small bites from each fillet, so after all were consumed it was the equivallent of about 1 1/4 fillets per person. After all fish were consumed and there was only some shrimp left over – then we ate the side dishes of rolls, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes with butter & brown sugar, and baked potatoes, all walked away satisfied. Pumpkin pie will be served later.

While it was not the turkey I am used to, it made for something so fun that we will do it again. Anything that produces that much laughter and joy at a dining table is worth the change of tradition.

Somehow in the hustle and bustle of getting ready for Christmas I am missing my notebook with notes from Friday’s Bible study. I think someone moved it while tidying up, and I have to locate it.

Hoping you had a lot of laughter today, sometimes Christmas can be hard for people. It took having children for me to begin to enjoy Christmas. I remember as a kid calculating the hours, minutes and seconds until the Christmas vacation was over so I could get to the relative safety of school – even though the kids in school were mean, I was safer at school than at home. Summer vacation seemed interminable.

Anyway, I praise God for His healing of the hurts of this holiday in me, and He has done so much healing. I really count myself blessed. I pray healing for you if you have challenges at Christmas time.

Have a wonderful rest of the day,

    Heather

  • Ask a question

We had a great Bible study today on prophesy, but I want to be more alert when I type the notes, so will start doing them tomorrow. It takes about 3 to 4 hours to get them properly typed up with Bible passages, etc. My oldest son has a college interview tomorrow, fortunately local, and I still have a gillion things to do before Christmas. My middle son wants to try and do an Italian tradition of having 12 kinds of fish for Christmas. Has anyone done that? If so, what do you suggest to make it easiest. My husband is behind this idea 100% and I am sadly realizing that turkey, my favorite will not be on the menu, sigh. I may get my turkey though once they go on sale after Christmas.

I want to wish you a Merry Christmas, and will try to get to your sites asap. Praying peace and joy in your households. For me, I am looking forward to Christmas Day and what it means. We still have to put up our tree, it is outside getting rained on, and we want it a bit drier before we bring it in. I can’t wait to smell the pine. We keep our tree up until the needles almost all fall off.

A friend of ours gave my husband a huge sprig of bamboo for a picture he wanted to take. We put it up in the Christmas tree spot (kind of looked like the Peanut’s Christmas Tree). My middle son did a double take, not noticing it even though he was sitting 3 inches away, so we told him it was our tree, that the needles had fallen. We had a good laugh. I live for those moments of laughter.

Anyway, I am putting myself at your mercy. Feel free to ask any question you like – as long as it stays within the bounds of propriety. I will try to answer it. It can be personal or Biblical.

    Have a Merry Christmas,

  • Exodus 12:37-51

Now the journey begins, and trust me Moses and the Israelites are going to have quite the adventure. I used to marvel that the Israelites, the moment Moses’s back was turned for those 40 days in the mountain, made idols. After all the signs and wonders they saw God do they still built idols. I am now realizing that those who depend solely on signs and wonders will wander once the signs and wonders pass. Without a relationship with God, it is far too easy to fall back to old ways, to old idols. Only walking forward with God protects us. Moses exemplifies a good example of a shepherd for his people. He had human traits, got angry with the people, frustrated with their complaining, and tried to take on too much, but he also had a love for this wayward tribe – interceded for them, and kept a love and focus on God that is enviable. And in his last days, Moses will prophesy the birth of the savior. What a life!

The Egyptians are grieving the loss of their first born sons. Once when I read this story to my oldest son he gulped when he realized that he was the first born son. If you didn’t know the heart of God, some of these historical stories could seem rather harsh. It is easy to forget, because so many years are compressed in so few pages, that the Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for 400 years. They came to Egypt through Joseph who actually saved the lives of all Egyptians and Israelites from a severe famine. The ruling powers ultimately forgot the good that Joseph (an Israelite) did for the Egyptians and enslaved the Israelites. God could have acted instantly, but instead waited 400 years, and I am certain He hoped that the Egyptians would mend their ways. They didn’t, but during this time God prospered the Israelites and helped them to grow in numbers. It was this population growth that upset Pharaoh so much that he, instead of destroying firstborn sons, decided that all male babies had to be killed. And God preserved one male child, Moses, in the palace of Pharaoh. Moses interceded for the release of the Israelites, but Pharaoh chose to harden his heart and not listen to Moses. God gave ample warning of what would happen, but Pharaoh decided to ignore those warnings and plagues - and that mistake on his part cost him not only the life of his firstborn son, but the lives of all the firstborn of the Egyptians and animals. What a cost Pharaoh’s pride had. And to top it off, Pharaoh is still going to act stupid.

Reading through the Bible I once asked Pastor Don why the Israelites kept turning to idols, kept doing stupid things when God had shown Himself so strongly in their lives. Pastor Don pointed out that God put the individual historical stories in the Bible to show us about ourselves. He picked and chose what went in so that we could learn from the mistakes of others instead of through experience. That these people made thousands and thousands of good choices, but God focused on the not so good ones because He wanted to prevent us from making the same wrong choices. He also pointed out that often many years pass between one chapter and the next. Between Genesis and Exodus 400 years had passed.

Exodus 12:37 Then the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children.

During this journey we are going to be looking at the meanings of the place names for they tell a story about the journey that is kind of surprising. If there are 600,000 men, and then women and children, that means that there is going to be an incredible tent town of 2 1/2 to 3 million people. My middle son loves military history, and we got to thinking about how much would need to be provided so that many people would have all that they needed in the form of food, water, and provisions. It is mind-boggling. And we need to remember that God abundantly provided for these people for 40 years! God truly is an awesome God, and a wonderful provider. We will also see God reveal Himself to the people through various new names of God that help us to see more of His qualities. This is going to be a great adventure for us too. Slip on your sandals – don’t forget that for 40 years the sandals and clothes never wore out.

Rameses means – Child of the sun. Rameses was an Egyptian city, so God liberated them from that Egypt which is a symbol of the world, the flesh, and sinful, idolatrous ways..

Succoth means tent town. Succoth is now a festival celebrated in September/October (harvest time) which commemorates the time when the Israelites lived in the wilderness during the Exodus. As a reminder of the shelters used in the wilderness, huts (sukkah) are built and used for eating and sleeping during the seven-day celebration. Succoth begins five days after the day of fasting and penitence, Yom Kippur. It commemorates a time of hardship, but also has rejoicing. The building of the Sukkah symbolizes trusting in God’s protection. It has to have at least three sides, but is flimsy. The roof is made of cut branches through which the sky can be seen. It is lavishly decorated with garlands and fruit. Even today these shelters are built and the Jews live in them for a week. During the time they spend in the succoths they talk to their children about the Exodus, and share the history of what God has done for their people.

Exodus 12:38-39 A mixed multitude went up with them also, and flocks and herds–a great deal of livestock. And they baked unleavened cakes of dough which they had brought out of Egypt; for it was not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared provisions for themselves.

What is cool is that some of the Egyptians and others went with the Israelites. Perhaps they left because of the plagues, curiosity, and others might have learned to respect God. But in all of Israel’s history there were those among them who were not Israelites. It was a fast exit from Egypt – the best way to exit from sinful ways, no looking back, not waiting to grab up souvenirs, and moving forward into the new life, trusting that God would provide.

Exodus 12:40-42 Now the sojourn of the children of Israel who lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years–on that very same day–it came to pass that all the armies of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. It is a night of solemn observance to the LORD for bringing them out of the land of Egypt. This is the night of the LORD, a solemn observance for all the children of Israel throughout their generations.

And this solemn observance continues throughout today.

Exodus 12:43 And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover: No foreigner shall eat it.

This is not a observance for pagans.

Exodus 12:44-45 But every man’s servant who is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then he may eat it. A sojourner and a hired servant shall not eat it.

Circumcision is a sign of covenant with God, so if the servant is under covenant protection, he may eat the Passover meal, if not, he cannot eat it.

Exodus 12:46 In one house it shall be eaten: you shall not carry any flesh outside the house, nor shall you break one of its bones.

This is another picture of Jesus, for the Lamb was unblemished, and was sacrificed to provide a covering for the house, and no bone is broken. Usually during crucifixion when they wanted to hasten death, the leg bones of the criminal were broken so they could not push themselves up on the cross to catch a breath and they would suffocate. When they came to Jesus they saw that He was already dead, so they pierced His side, but did not break his leg bones.

Exodus 12:47-48 All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. And when a stranger dwells with you and wants to keep the Passover to the LORD let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it, and he shall be as a native of the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat it.

Circumcision was a sign of the covenant with God. It involved the removal of a small fleshly part. We all have those areas of flesh that need removing in our lives, and now God is concerned with the circumcision of our hearts.

Romans 2:28-29 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly , nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh, but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter whose praise is not from men but from God.

Just like the Jews in Jesus’ day, we get so caught up in the outward symbols and signs of our faith, but what really matters is the heart. You can look externally like a Christian, but still be seething inside, and not very Christian in your heart. But in those days, it was an outward sign of an inward process. Think of what it would mean, the men who were circumcised were daily reminded of the covenant. It involved something that was very dear to them. And if you were close to others, you would be able to see if they were really circumcised as the covenant required.

Exodus 12:49 One law shall be for the native-born and for the stranger who dwells among you.

Everyone who is circumcised, both Jew and Gentile function under the same law. There is no difference, not one law for Jew and one law for Gentile. It is the same today, there is one law, one way to salvation. We play by God’s rules, not our own inventions.

Exodus 12:50-51 Thus all the children of Israel did, as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. And it came to pass, on that very same day, that the LORD brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt according to their armies.

I am not aware of any commentary about the Israelite armies, I am wondering if they are according to the tribes and how polished they were. I cannot imagine the Egyptians encouraging people that they considered a threat to carry arms. I know later God will assign the tribes certain places in the march, but this army reference puzzles me. Any ideas?

I took a break before spell checking this post to watch the Andy Williams show. And God delighted me with an answer to my question. The Israelites were NOT a mighty army at the time God spoke those words, but He was speaking a mighty army into existence. Sort of like He did with Gideon.

God has brought the Israelites out of Egypt. Now God has to get Egypt out of the Israelites. That is a mammoth job only God can do.

    Have a blessed day!

  • Exodus 12:23-36

We left the Israelites making their preparations for Passover. God had given specific instructions about the selection of the lamb and what was to be done with the blood from the sacrifice and the sharing of the meal, even the fact that it had to be eaten standing up with shoes and belt on. We looked at how this corresponded with the life of Jesus.

Do not forget that the Israelites had been slaves for 400 years, the Pharaoh had decided to kill all the sons of the Israelites because their population was increasing so much that Pharaoh felt threatened. God had warned Pharaoh that the plagues would occur, and Pharaoh chose to harden his heart and not allow the Israelites even three days in the wilderness to worship God. He chose so many times to harden his heart that God honored that. Much the same way that we too can choose to harden our hearts against God and His truths, and then one day God will honor that. God will not force us to love Him, for love to be love, it has to be freely chosen.

Now Moses shares God’s prophesy which was going to be fulfilled:

Exodus 12:23-27 For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts (remember, that makes the shape of a cross) the LORD will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you. And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance, for you and your sons forever. It will come to pass when you come to the land which the LORD will give you, just as He promised, that you shall keep this service. And it shall be, when your children say to you, “What do you mean by this service?” that you shall say, “It is the Passover sacrifice of the LORD, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.” So the people bowed their heads and worshipped.

One thing you might notice in this chapter is that the instructions of the Passover were repeated. God told Moses, Moses told the people. So often in the Old Testament the instructions were repeated. We will see this especially with the construction of the Temple and the various offerings. This is sort of like God sharing something in Bold Capital Letters. One thing we can see from this is that God is VERY SPECIFIC, and when He tells us to do something, He wants it done exactly as He said. There are reasons for this in the Old Testament – for these actions are pictures of Jesus, and God wants to make sure that the picture is an accurate portrait of what will come to pass. Moses will actually lose the chance to get into the promised land because of not following God’s commands exactly and adding something to God’s picture of Jesus.

What if one of the Israelites did not feel like putting the blood on the lintel and just put it on the two doorposts because he did not feel like raising his arm over his head? He would have been mourning the loss of a child. God is very specific, and He will do what He promises to do. We need to learn to listen carefully and follow exactly. He has our personal best interests in mind, and when we stray from His instructions it does bring us grief.

Notice that it mentions that when He sees the blood of the sacrifice, he will pass over the door and NOT ALLOW the DESTROYER to come into the house. God did not do the killing, He just removed His hand of protection from the houses of those not covered. God has no desire that any should be lost, but He cannot provide covering for those who do not honor His commands. When we disobey God, there are always consequences, and sadly, they are brought on by us through our disobedience. God would rather that we obey and gain His best for us.

How long were they to observe the ordinance? FOREVER.  Not just until Jesus came, but forever. We will be seeing in Revelation that the feasts are still being kept. And I love the part about WHEN YOUR CHILDREN ASK, isn’t that what we want, our children to observe what we do and ask why, so that we can tell them of the goodness of God not only with words, mandatory church, and rules, but with our whole lives.

And the people bowed their heads and worshipped. Notice, at this point they were worshipping in faith, because they had not yet been delivered, but they trusted that God would do what He said He would do. And isn’t it true that the thing that brings us to our knees is God’s goodness in our life. When I think of what God delivered me from, I cannot help but worship Him.

Exodus 12:28 Then the children of Israel went away and did so; just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.

I am so pleased that in this they obeyed God. Later they will test how far they have to obey God, but here they obeyed completely and listened to their spiritual leaders – Moses and Aaron.

Exodus 12:29-30 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of livestock. So Pharaoh rose in the night, he and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

My heart aches for those Egyptians because they suffered so much because of their Pharaoh’s hard heart. Pharaoh rose at night – without God in our lives our spirits are in darkness, for we do not have the light of truth. We need to remember that we do not sin in a vacuum, that what we do impacts others. Pharaoh’s hardened heart caused so much death and destruction. Here it is the death of lives, but there is also a spiritual death that comes from hardened hearts and rejecting God’s gift of salvation. One of my subscribers has two sons he loves very much, but he is teaching them a false doctrine that might cause them never to come to Christ. I keep praying that there will be those in his son’s lives who will show them the truth about God. Not only is he hurting himself and causing his spiritual death but he is sowing seeds of destruction into other lives. The things we do impact others. When we as Christians do not act in a godly manner, it does not give a good testimony of Christ. If we as Christians do not pay our bills, cheat, swear, tip poorly (one example is leaving a tract because salvation is very valuable, but not a financial tip), or act rudely, or drive a car with a million Christian bumper stickers and disobey traffic laws or cut people off, those who are not Christian will take notice. Our sins do affect others, and we need to spend time with God so that when we walk on this earth, we are walking in His footsteps, His way. God does not find pleasure in spiritual death of people, He really wanted that none should be lost.

Exodus 12:31-32 Then he (Pharaoh) called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, “Rise, go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel. And go serve the LORD as you have said. Also take your flocks and your herds, as you have said and be gone; and bless me also.”

Pharaoh, pharaoh, pharaoh. He still has not learned, we will see that he has repented of his disobedience to God, but not wholeheartedly. He is like the person who apologizes for what they did when they got caught. They were not really repenting, meaning turing around their lives to walk in obedience to God, but rather sorry that they got caught. Pharaoh got caught, so he allows the Israelites to leave, but then he wants Moses to “bless me also.” Some Pharaoh, bless me, do this for me, do that for me, me, me, me. What about all the other people who lost children due to Pharaoh’s hardened heart? Does he not care about his people? And we will see that after a short time, when Pharaoh’s needs are not being taken care of by the Israelite slaves, he will decide to go and get back “his” slaves.

The Egyptian citizens realized what was going on.

Exodus 12:33-36 And the Egyptians urged the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste. For they said, “We shall all be dead.” So the people took their dough before it was leavened, having their kneading bowls bound up in their clothes on their shoulders. Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing. And the LORD had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.

The gold, silver and clothing would be the equivalent of the wages that they did not receive as the slaves of the Egyptians. The people would wear these clothes for 40 years in the wilderness, and they would not wear out, not even holes in their sandals. God also had promised the Israelites that they would leave with great wealth. God promised that to Abram, Genesis 15:13-14 Then He said to Abram; “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

Notice that the bread was not leavened. Jesus would warn his disciples about the leaven of the pharisees – leaven is a symbol for sin. We see that 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Not only did God show Pharaoh that He was stronger than Pharaoh, but it also showed the Israelites that God was stronger than the idols of the land, and that God would do what He promised, and in the time that He promised them. God literally purged the Israelites of leaven, for the sacrifice (symbol of Jesus) purged sin, and none of the leaven of the land of Egypt would travel with the Israelites. But God will take His people on a long journey, testing them so that they can see for themselves when they are in obedience and not, and forming them into a strong nation ready to move into the Promised Land.

God has freed us from our sins, and purged us from the leaven of our past. In our current walk with the Lord, He too is testing us through wilderness experiences and also through the good that He has done for us, so that we can become more and more like Him, growing stronger in the LORD.

    Have a blessed day.

  • Gifts

The heartbeat theme this week is gifts. For me, the most important gift is LOVE.

LOVE – There is  no love greater than God’s love, that He sent His Son, Jesus to die for our sins. Agape love is something that is beyond my comprehension and this is the kind of love that Jesus and God has for us. In the Love Chapter, 1 Corinthians 13, you can substitute God or Jesus for the word “love” and it would read true in every instance. If I put my name there, the passage does not always ring true. My love, in fact, all human love is imperfect. Only God gives us perfect, agape love. Love is not just limited to Christians, at one point the love of a group of pagans saved my life and stopped me from killing myself. The love of Pastor Don and those who sought to help me find Christ in my life also blesses me. My husband just came and kissed the top of my head, and my kids’ spontaneous expressions of love warm my heart. But we have to be generous with our love too. When we receive love, it is so important to share love – not just clutch it to ourselves. A sweet pleasure comes from doing loving things for others, and sharing the joy of God’s love with them. I see so many people starving for love, a smile or a kind gesture can make their day. In the Middle School where I get to volunteer during 7th grade sewing, so many of the kids tear at my heartstrings. These kids often do not have a positive word spoken to them and soak up love like a sponge. I remember those days of needing the few kind words of strangers to cherish during the terror. In orphanages where children do not receive loving touches they do not flourish. God loves it when we love Him back. I once apologized to Him because I did not think I was good at loving Him back, and He gave me the image of a baby with wet, sloppy kisses. He told me that you do not expect a baby to be proficient in love, but that those wet kisses are so special for they are given in love. He loves our attempts to Love Him. During the holidays, may your hearts and homes be filled with love, the greatest gift of all.
