Exodus 9:8-12 Boils
Well we left Pharaoh hardening his heart. None of the plagues so far have caused him to think that maybe, just maybe God should be honored. We have seen that he refused to even let the Israelites go for three days into the wilderness to sacrifice to God. He has made promises to Moses about permitting this, and then taken them back. Each of the plagues given to Pharaoh have shown that God is more powerful than the idols that the Egyptians worshipped. We have now come to the Sixth plague Boils.
Remember that Pharaoh has finally crossed that line, where he has hardened his heart one too many times, and now God will honor that desire of Pharaoh. We will see God hardening Pharaoh’s heart, but that is only after Pharaoh made that choice five times previously.
Well, this new plague will be very unpleasant for the Egyptians, boils. What is a boil? It is a skin abscess, a localized infection deep in the skin. It starts out as a reddened, tender area, and becomes firm and hard. The center softens and fills with white blood cells to kill the infection, and this collection of white blood cells, bacteria and proteins forms pus. The pus forms a head which can be surgically opened or spontaneously drain out.
Imagine the fastidious Egyptians covered with pus filled boils. The Egyptian god, typhon, is the god targeted in this plague. Typhon was worshipped by sacrificing humans in a furnace (I would guess it would be the same furnace that Moses got his ashes from). Remember God requires obedience, not sacrifice. Typhon was a powerful Egyptian demon who constantly opposed a beneficent osiris. He is noted for bringing heat and drought and wind that came up from the Sahara desert, and destroyed everything that was vulnerable to heat. This wind later was called a typhoon. He was depicted as a monster of enormous bulk with several heads and wings from his shoulders. He imprisoned osiris in an ark and sent horus to an island. The other deities had to escape to save their lives, and hide in the shape of various animals, the same animals that the Egyptians later made into idols. He was later cast into Mount Etna, and is thought to have caused the blood red lava.
What is interesting about this plague is that this is a plague that God did not announce first, it just caught the Egyptians unaware. The Pharaoh could not pretend foreknowledge of it and He suffered as much as his subjects.
Exodus 9:8-10 So the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Take for yourselves handfuls of ashes from a furnace, and let Moses scatter it toward the heavens in the sight of Pharaoh. And it will become fine dust in all the land of Egypt, and it will cause boils that break out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt. Then they took ashes from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered them toward the heaven. And they caused boils that break out in sores on man and beast.
Boils were not comfortable and it hurt the animals and humans, driving them mad. God permitted satan to try Job with boils too, but for a far different purpose. God wanted to show satan that Job would not reject God just because his circumstances were difficult. But from Job we can see how painful they boils were. Job 2:7-8 So satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes.
I have to apologize to you, because before, after the plague of lice when the magicians told Pharaoh that this was the hand of God, I did not think they made another appearance in front of Pharaoh, but I was wrong, for they show up here unable to stand before Moses, brought to their knees.
Genesis 9:11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians. But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh; and he did not heed them just as the LORD had spoken to Moses.
God has escalated the plagues to a point where Pharaoh, had his heart not been hardened, should have realized that he needed to obey God. How many of us are like Pharaoh? Circumstance after circumstance in our lives gives us challenges, but we are determined to handle it ourselves instead of calling out to God. How often have we disobeyed God and then faced the consequences of that disobedience without repenting?
All it would have taken was a bit of humility on Pharaoh’s part and he could have preserved himself and his people some massive grief. But no, instead, Pharaoh hardened his heart.
Now this plague came unannounced. But we will, in the end times also see a plague of boils which has been announced in the book of Revelation. Revelation 16:2 So the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and a foul and loathsome sore came upon men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshipped his image.
I used to wonder about God and the plagues until I realized that in a way He is treating His creation like I would treat my child. When my kids disobey, I could not pat them on the back, smile and do nothing or else I would have created a tiny rebel. Instead they had to have consequences for their poor choices. I had to deprive them of an object that they loved, give them a time out, or as they got older take away a privilege. By doing this at an early age, I meet with little disobedience now, for they have grown to accept the limits that we value, and they honor them. The plagues seem harsh, but they did not start out as harsh. God first spoke to Pharaoh through Moses, then he showed him signs and wonders, and when that didn’t work there were annoying things. But Pharaoh chose to ignore God, and God had to speak “louder” to get Pharaoh’s attention.
How I pray that I am obedient to God, that I listen to Him the first time. It has taken quite some time for me to realize that God does not issue orders just to issue orders. Growing up in my home, I learned that when my parents said they loved me, it meant they wanted something from me and it would hurt. I realized that their demands were more self-serving and did not always have my best interests at heart. But God, God loves with an agape love mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13, and His love and commandments, and orders are not to make me jump through a hoop, but instead to help me grow in ways that are best for me. I had to learn that the Creator of the Universe knows what is best for His creation. If I follow God’s guidance, things go well, if not there are troubles. God wants to help us avoid the difficulties through our obedience to Him.
Hoping you have a blessed Sunday.
Heather

it’s in our difficulties that we do struggle a lot. but perseverance brings strength and strength- hope. and it reminds me of phillipians 3:12-14. because struggles make us stronger. and ultimately.. if the person’s a true christian… more godly
[How I pray that I am obedient to God, that I listen to Him the first time.]
Amen. Have a blessed Lord’s day Heather.
larry
Amen to that! Often when we are plagued we tend to blame God. Thankfully God disciplines those He loves rather than spoiling us.
Wonderful post
RYC: I think that your so right about what it will take to unite the church. I think that we all know the right answers in our hearts and minds but it is laying down the pride or whatever it is that keeps us from doing it in the flesh. I’m waiting for that day when we will be truly united in Heaven WOW What a day that will be.
Love ya, Darlena
Well, Heather, you have again posted another excellent study. I imagine that you take TONS of notes during each and every service, scarfing down the word of God like it’s a Pumpkin Pie on Thanksgiving.
On the heartache front: Sometimes, being broken allows us to love the Lord with all of our heart. He becomes our bread and water…our only sustaining life force. Through a lack of, we come clinging to the only one who can supply all of our need.
I am thankful for my past, in that, without it, I would not have come to know my future. When I had nothing left, God became my all in all. I clung to each word that fell from His lips, as if it were a morsel of food falling upon a man in starvation. God’s word was my nourishment; He became my strength. With each and every morsel He dropped into my heart, I grew wiser and stronger. I could not see it day by day, but I can look back now and see just how far I’ve come.
I love the Lord, and all He does for us. I can not imagine where my life would be without Him. I pray, my dear friend, that I will have the pleasure of meeting you in person. You are a tenderheart…a precious soul, and I do ask the Lord to make it possible for us. (Maybe we’ll go to Toronto together? Two birds, one stone? Or should that be Two prayers, one answer? Either way, be blessed!
And know, you are ONE, chosen before the foundation of this world to be Holy (set apart, unique) and precious (so~ dearly loved).
I thank God for you, daily!
Wonderful insights, Heather Dawn. I came to thank you for your kinds comment on my site about my family. I know enough of your past to know how deeply you feel about family. I am proud of you for how different you have made the lives of your children. I am even more proud that you have chosen not to allow it to harden your heart. I have often found it to be true that the hearts which most easily overflow with Living Water are the broken ones. I am proud to be your brother in Jesus. James
Thank you again, Heather
Thank you for the response. I truly appreciate it.
However, I firmly believe that the “greater things” are not for us to drive out demonic spirits, heal the sick, or such. If you go back and read that section of Scripture you will discover to whom Jesus was addressing (not us, but His disciples at the time) and why this is important. The seventy-two had just returned all full of joy that they could cast out demons. They were incorrectly focusing on the wrong thing: the miracles and their ability to do them. Jesus firmly tells them: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” This is referring to Jesus’ own victory for us through His death, burial, and resurrection. Then He goes on to say, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Is this the focus? Nope, because He goes on to warn them by telling them, “However, DO NOT rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” So which is more important, the handling of snakes and scorpions (demonic influences, I believe because He goes on to say “to overcome all the power of the enemy” which is Satan) or salvation? I believe salvation is.
In John 14 Philip told Jesus, “Show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus comes back immediately and retorts, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or AT LEAST believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. (The focus here is that Jesus considered the miracles unimportant as compared to knowing and doing God’s will.) Why do I say this? Jesus goes on to relate that He will do even “greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” (John 14:9-13) What is the greater thing? A miracle that lasts only a lifetime, or salvation that lasts for eternity? The apostles would not necessarily do more stupendous miracles than Jesus did (like feeding 5,000) but their outreach would be far greater (Peter in one sermon had 3,000 converts). This was possible because Jesus had gone to the Father and had sent the Holy Spirit. Miracles are important, but some pastors, evangelists, and missionaries have done even greater things than these by preaching the good news to many thousands of people. So which is greater, a miracle of the moment or salvation? I believe salvation.
In John 5 we find Jesus chiding a man He had healed to quit focusing on the miracle and he related to the Jewish teachers who were giving Him a hard time about it this way: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.” What greater things? Namely, salvation through His resurrection: “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.” (John 5:19-21) So which is greater, the miracle or salvation? I believe salvation.
Far too many focus on the “greater things” thinking they are the miracles, but as we have seen as we take a closer look at the passages, for Jesus the greatest thing was salvation through Him, and never the miracles. His miracles were done always to point people to God, show He was the Messiah, and to let people who were lost know that the kingdom of God had come.
Just so there is no mistake in thinking I do not believe in miracles or that they can happen now, because I do and I have seen them for myself. However, to equate what Jesus taught His disciples at that time as something we now are to be doing on a regular basis is faulty teaching. Why? Because folks begin to focus on the miracles rather than Jesus and salvation. If someone is healed in the name of Jesus, they are healed forever and completely. If not, it is not from Jesus. However, the greatest miracle of all is not someone ever getting healed, but that person entering the kingdom of God. This is why Catholicism focusing on certain relics, holy water, doing absolutions or having visions to heal people is false teaching. People begin to focus on the spot, the relic, or the person rather than Jesus. The same is true for evangelicals who want a pastor, speaker, or evangelist to “heal” them. God is not in the “assembly line” business of healing people. (NEXT!) In fact, He will heal whom He wants when He wants to, and it will always be done to bring Him glory and never to just heal the person. Again, what is the greater thing, salvation or the miracle? I would rather that people be saved than healed. This attitude does not do away with miracles, as if we could ever do such a thing, but places the focus where it should be — on Jesus and salvation.
Glad you liked the article. Yancey and Brand co-wrote three books together, all of which are terrific, and Brand was very much a mentor in Yancey’s life. As Yancey writes in the introduction to the book that passage was from, “I have written honestly about my early struggles, due in large part to lengthy exposure to toxic churches. I can imagine God taking great delight in steering me to Dr. Brand (through my wife’s serendipitous descovery of his essay in a closet, of course) at a critical time in my spiritual journey. Okay, Phillip, you’ve seen some of the worst the church has to offer. Now I’ll show you one of the best.“
In The Likeness of God is the updated version of the first two books they wrote together, and it’s one of the best ten books I have ever read. You’ll love it.
ever Beloved,
Joe
Pastor Blastor, are you one who believes? if so then Mark 16:15-18 is written for you. Mark 16:17 says, “and these signs will follow those who believe….”
You say that the greatest gift is salvation and in that you speak correctly. Salvation is by far the most important gift that Jesus gives us. But signs and wonders also have a place in the church, and if used properly also help to reach people.
One of the most important questions to answer regarding the use of any of the gifts of God, of the signs and wonders is, WHO GETS THE GLORY? If God gets the glory then it is a gift from God. If people walk away praising the one using the signs and wonders and the gifts, then it is likely not of God. When Jesus healed people they did not walk away praising Jesus, they praised God. If someone in our church is healed, they walk away praising God.
You have to admit that satan is alive and well on this earth today. New age theology is rampant, people are treading paths that lead to destruction, the occult is rising, and dangerous philosophies are emerging that are trying to pull people away from God. In fact Jesus predicted that in the end times it would be like in the days of Noah, and that it would be worse than Sodom and Gomorrah. Given what is occuring on the earth today, would Jesus leave us defenseless? I do not think so. He knows that we need the gifts and callings that He promised us. satan is thrilled that so many Christians are not acting effectively with the gifts that God gave us to put satan under our feet. Jesus left the earth with the instructions that we are to have dominion over the earth, that what we bind on earth is bound in heaven.
If the gifts were only for the apostles, then why did the early church abound in them? How do you explain the book of Acts? How do you explain people like Smith Wigglesworth? How do you explain Paul who did not walk in the flesh with Jesus performing miracles? Why would God give those gifts then and then take them back when we so desperately need them now?
I suspect that there are people who have had the following dialogue in their minds, “I am a good Christian, I pray to God, I go to church, I live a good life, I prayed to God that he heal ________ and he wasn’t healed. Since I am a good Christian and God did not heal ______ the gifts of healing are no longer active on the earth.”
The Bible says we will have what we say, and what we believe. If we believe the gifts are not for today, guess what, the person believing that will not have the gifts for today. They will not operate in the gifts of the Spirit.
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. It is sad that people zero in on the Word of God that supports what they want to believe. Yes, you can take the Word of God and argue any point you want, but why dumb down God? Why give the message, IF GOD WANT YOU HEALED? IF????????? Of course God wants us healed!!!!! When we pray, ”If it is God’s will that you be healed….” we are dumbing down God. God wants our healing. Sickness is not of God, but of satan who brings sickness and death. Of course, our healing may not immediately be what we imagine it to be in the physical. God may choose to allow a physical condition to persist as He heals a deeper issue that we don’t imagine. But illness was never God’s intent for mankind, illness comes through satan, so if we are praying “If God wants to heal you…” we are saying, that God cannot defeat satan and the illness that satan has put on a person.
We need prophesy, (Speaking forth the Word of God prophetically), those prophesies will agree with the Bible and most often will agree with what God has already shown a person. We also need the works of the Holy Spirit, praying in tongues with interpretation. All of the gifts and callings. Yes, we are to preach the Word of God, but not just preach, but put into practice ALL the Word of God. A healthy church operates in all the of the ministries, not just teaching and evangelizing. What the church today suffers is a lack of faith. Oh, we have faith for salvation, but do we trust that God can come through in all the areas of our lives? Our church today has put God in a box, and it is time we let Him out. Our lack of faith hampers the fullness of what God can do in our lives. Yes, God is sovereign, but He will not force Himself on us. We choose to let Him operate in our lives fully or not. God will honor our request, and He will honor our hardened hearts if we so choose. He will not force a person to salvation, and He will not force a person to act in faith. And yes, a person who can only believe for salvation will be saved and go to Heaven. But I want to be as effective here on earth as I can, and so I believe that I will let God do His will with me in all areas, not just salvation.
And at the same time, the church needs discernment. Some who say they are of Christ are not, some are false teachers and prophets. But because there are false teachers and prophets, does not mean that all are. It is equally blind to totally negate the good that God is doing by claiming that these gifts, signs and wonders are not active today, that is also a lack of discernment.
I know we can agree that salvation is the most important gift that God gives us, but why not use all the tools He has provided to effect salvations? Why not use all the tools that He has provided to defeat satan, we are to gain dominion on the earth. Who gives us the power, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It is not in our own strength, but by the name of Jesus. It is not us who will get the glory, but Jesus. There is much work to be done, why not use all the tools He has provided to do the work. There is such a harvest and we are so busy trying to convince ourselves that we cannot do what He said we can. Pastor Blastor, I know that when you get to the point of stretching your faith in God, that you will be a mighty warrior in God’s camp. satan will be trembling in his boots.
Heather
When I went to post the above post on your site, I saw that you mentioned that your mom was into the new age and that you too did crystal readings. It dawned on me that you might be hyper sensitive to anything that even closely resembles the new age. I am too. I weigh everything I see in the scale of is it new age stuff or is it of God, which is why I am so careful to see that it is God who gets the glory. The new age is a feeble imitation of what God does, and it is meant to be that way to pull people away from God. Why not show the new agers the real thing, and then use that real thing to lead them to salvation?
Heather
The ALMIGHTY GOD is greater and there is no power but his, I am glad that you wrote the about Moses, Pharoh and the plagues as an example that the CREATOR is no joke, and no one to be playing with. With all HIS power and might he is loving, merciful, forgiving and unforsaking, but HE hates sin which the LORD distroys all evil. I love the LORD
!
Funny how the world tries to put new names on it’s perditious ways, new age all right new age for the wrong ideas.
GOD bless, you dear sister!
