House of Cards
Thank you for your prayers. We had a great visit – no cavities for five people. Pretty good if you ask me. We also went to the World Trade Center site and spent some time at Rockefeller Plaza. The kids were off for Yom Kippur.
I have to tell you that God has been dealing with me for repentance lately, and I am repenting. I count myself so blessed to have the relationship with God that I have – never would I have thought that God would bless me so much with His presence. God is so awesome.
I save devotionals that are pretty awesome, and today during our long visit to the dentist my middle son was building houses of cards (granted that they were business cards) but it reminded me of the following devotional. I hope it blesses you. For most of my life I always thought that my life was as feeble as a house of card, but God has redeemed even that. May you never look at a deck of cards the same way again. This is from an anonymous source.
Deck of Cards
This is a story about a soldier in the North Africa Campaign in World War II.
After heavy fighting, the man returned to camp. The next day being Sunday, the Chaplain had set up church service. The men were asked to take out their Bibles or Prayer Books. The Chaplain noticed one soldier looking at a deck of cards. After service, he was taken by the Chaplain to see the Major. The Chaplain explained to the Major what he had seen. The Major told the young soldier he would have to be punished if he could not explain himself.
The young soldier told the Major that during the battle, he had neither a Bible or a Prayer Book so he would use his deck of cards and explained: Well sir,The Ace, it tells me that there is one GOD and no other.
The “2,” it reminds me that there are two parts of the Bible, the OLD TESTAMENT and the NEW TESTAMENT.
The “3″ tells me of the TRINITY OF GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON and GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT.
The “4″ reminds me of the FOUR GOSPELS, MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE and JOHN.
The “5″ it tells me of the FIVE UNWISE VIRGINS who were lost and that five were saved. The “6″ makes me mindful that GOD CREATED THE EARTH IN JUST SIX DAYS, and GOD said that it was good.
The “7″ it reminds me that GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY.
The “8″ it reminds me that GOD DESTROYED ALL LIFE BY WATER EXCEPT FOR EIGHT PEOPLE, Noah, his wife, their three sons, and their three son’s wives. The “9″ I think of the NINE LEPERS that GOD healed. There were ten lepers in all, but only one stopped to thank him.
The “10″ reminds me of the TEN COMMANDMENTS carved in stone by the hand of GOD.
The “JACK” makes me remember the Prince of Darkness. Like a roaring lion, he devours those that he can.
The “QUEEN” I see the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF JESUS.
As I look at the last card, “THE KING,” it reminds me that JESUS IS LORD OF LORDS and KING OF KINGS!
There are 365 spots on a deck of cards, and that is the number of days in each year. There are 52 cards to a deck and that is the number of weeks in a year. There are 12 picture cards and that is the number of months in a year. There are 4 different suits in a deck and that is the number of seasons in a year. And so, the young soldier then said to the Major, ”You see, Sir, that my intentions were honorable. My deck of cards serves as my BIBLE, my PRAYER BOOK and my ALMANAC.” A deck of cards should most importantly remind us that we need JESUS 365 days, 52 weeks and 12 months a year and that we should always PRAY “4″ others.May you never look at a deck of cards the same way.
I pray that God blesses you. I know that I am blessed by knowing all of you!

New York City is a fascinating place to me that I have took a greyhound bus to literally wander around in twice. It has been years since the last trip as I look forward to another one in years to come to learn more about people. I can’t tell you how many times, I was asked, “What country are you from” while I walked around the streets talking to people on the first trip. The second trip I brought my Mother with me who told me the first trip put additional grey hairs on her head as she worried about me. So, instead of giving into her fear and her not being that far from home before, I encouraged her to go with me the second time which she fought the idea for months. We arrived around 2 am at the bus station in the city and took a taxi to Brooklyn where a cousin around my age lived. The taxi driver was enough of a initial scary experience for her as he proved to be such a nice guy despite appearance as he drove us to Brooklyn. God used the taxi driver as he talked to us to help calm her fears about the trip and open her eyes to more of the wonderful people God created in this world. It was seeing Rockfeller Plaza decorated for Christmas what encouraged to come as she saw the city in early December that year. What we saw in the midwest on TV became reality to her as she saw it for real as she walked the streets of New York.
We are told about Heaven in the Bible. There are many ways to experience an idea of it here on earth to make it more of a reality for us as we live this human life and look forward to eternity.
Very interesting….I had never heard of this before. I will remember this when I use a deck of cards.
