  • Carolyn asked the following questions:

    1. I don’t know much about N.Y., but after seeing the bears ~ are you near a woods;  what kind of land are you in (suburbia, country, etc.)

My husband saw this bear the other day, which is why Carolyn asked where we live. I live in upstate New York, and it is a mountainous area, with lots of land, trees and country. I live in a small town, and there is enough woods around to support a bear population. We have a few bears around that tend to make a circuit that seems to be related to the garbage truck route. Many of the towns around are very careful because of the bears, we have had a few problems with bears breaking into houses and causing trouble. Right now we have to be especially careful because there are cubs and moms wandering around. We do not want to get between a momma bear and her cubs. I have instructed my kids to not go out too much by themselves to walk or jog, because until we know the bear isn’t around I don’t want them getting cornered. During the fall we also have to be careful during to hunting season. But what is awesome is that when I look out my back window, I see mountains and no houses. In the winter I can see the road in front of my house, but it feels like the country. I love it.

While the focus of the picture was my daughter on her birthday, you can see the view from my back deck. Trees and mountains, and what awesome pictures God creates with those.

    2. What country (s) would you be most interested in visiting, and why?

My fantasy is to visit Israel, to walk where Jesus walked and just worship.

    3. What parts of the Bible do you most like to read devotionally, or for other reasons ~& which ones are the most challenging for you?

I tend to like to read the Bible from cover to cover because I find that if I pick my favorites I might miss something that God wants me to see about my life. I think the most challenging for me changes depending on where I am in my walk with God. For example, when I first stumbled into Living Word Chapel’s Friday Bible study, Pastor Don was teaching in Romans. Romans was tough for me because I was pretty angry at God. For a long time I struggled with Job, wondering how God could have allowed satan to inflict Job with his problems. How could the book end by saying that God restored in abundance all that Job lost, when Job did not get back his first kids who died. I was angry at God’s seemingly lack of response to Job when Job confronted God. Sometimes the love of Jesus is tough to take when I am feeling rather down. And when I looked at passages in Psalms like He knew my end from my beginning, or had fashioned me and knew what I would have dealt with. I used to bristle at that. Now God will strike my heart almost anywhere I am reading, it seems that He knows as I read that I will have to face His truth.

That being said, what has most impressed me lately is how much Jesus is in the Whole Bible, and how God does keep His promises, and that often God does not act immediately (that is not always comforting to me when I want Him to act sooner). But how, not one promise has fallen through the cracks. When I see the prophesies fulfilled, I can trust that the unfulfilled ones will also be fulfilled in the right time. It is comforting to know that even when we don’t see how much God is in control, He really is. I hope that makes sense.

TBN has Pastor Don on right now, from a previous show of Praise in the Night. I am recording it, so am up later than I probably should be.

hoping you have a blessed night.
    Heather

  • Hi Heather,

I saw your posts on my son’s (Davenporter’s) Xanga.  Looks like you have quite a following.

I’ve been to Israel & the middle east (as a young child).  While it would be fascinating to see the land where Jesus walked, one gets a lot more context about the teachings of Jesus from books about the culture and people (Jews) and religious setting of that time period.  I’m getting a lot from the A.D. Chronicles by Thoene.

My fantasy is to see Jesus in Heaven.  Not as much so anyone else (I can’t imagine what it will be like).

If Jesus is truly God, then it should be expected that Jesus can be seen throughout the Bible.  Some Jews will try to explain this away, and some of their points may seem valid.  Could make for a lengthy discussion so I’ll stop there.

You might be interested to read what C.S. Lewis thinks about the book of Job.  The main theme of Job is that God is sovereign and not to be questioned.  He knows what He’s doing, and we usually don’t understand it.  It’s also an inspiring story because it’s about someone who hit rock bottom yet ended up at the top.  Must have been written by a man, for men, but you have some good points that I don’t disagree with.

Your daughter looks about the age of my youngest, about 13 I’d say.  Whoops, next thing you know she’ll be driving, and then off to college like my son!  Thank God I have a week at Cannon Beach Conference Center to spend with him!

  • Hi Heather,

That is one big bear and your daughter is just beautiful. The view from your deck fantastic. I had a hard time when I was reading the Bible from cover to cover with Numbers. I think that it would be fantastic to walk where Jesus walked. Greg’s uncle went to Israel and he was baptized in the river Jordan how cool is that. Take care and have a wonderful weekend.

    Love ya, Darlena

  • Wow…what a wonderful place to live! Although, I am a baby when it comes to the woods~ I am orginally a city girl. We live in western Ny and we have woods around us also. Farm lands, Amish….my husbands family owns acres of land in PA. We go there once in awhile for family picnics. The kids all love to walk through the woods…I am on the edge of freaking the whole time I’m in there! I know it’s crazy but…? lol lol lol.

  • Heather, your daughter is very beautiful and wow what a background to be blessed with! Have a great weekend! In Christ’s Love……Monic

  • Greetings Heather,
Found my way over here from OJesusLovesYouSoMuch’s site and thought I would pop in and say hello.
What a beautiful area that you live in and your daughter is stunning. I am from the Black Hills of South Dakota where almost all of God’s creatures roam freely. Even though we do not have bears in the “neighborhood”, we do have deer, elk, mountain goats, etc. and they all nestled in our beautiful forest.
I fear that I would be a dissenter in visiting a different country. I love the country that I’m in and I truly have no desire to travel elsewhere.
Thank you for allowing me to drop by today and leave a comment, your site is a wonderful place to visit.   Blessings ~

  • Good morning! I came upon your current wonderings in some of my recent wanderings and thought I would greet you in Jesus’ name. Thanks for the great thoughts you express here. I loved the bear picture (I noticed the window stayed up for the photo – very smart). I live in the country myself and we occasionally see black bear – but they look like cubs next to that one! Have a blessed day and know that you are loved from everlasting to everlasting. Old Hat

  • You know I also had a hard time with Job. Still do at times. I just don’t understand why satan gets to visit him. And how God took a wonderful man.. and did this to him. But …what I love about the book is that.. it show’s who’s boss.. who has power.. and who we have to answer too.  ( He does not have to answer to us. ) It show’s who is in control. ( Thats the God part)  The other part shows..how people .. even the people that are suppose to love you..can fail you. That what seems wise to others.. isn’t wise at all.  And in the end..If we just love God no matter what the circumstances are.. he will bless us. We just need to trust that all things worked together for good, beause we love him.

  • ps.. God didn’t do this to job.. but he allowed satan too. I noticed in the above statement that I said God did.

  • Hi Heather!  Thanks so much for your comment.  I’ve really been appreciating your testimony.  Wow.  We used to live in Newark, NY (not NJ!) and spent quite a lot of time around the Finger Lakes region – sooo pretty there!  This was a really great post.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  • That looks like a beautiful area to live. Not too sure about the bears.

  • They certainly can! But so precious and rewarding. Worth it all…

  • Thank you so much for your prayers and words of encouragement. I havent been around as much lately but that is changing. God Bless you.

    Hugs,

    Patty

  • Hi Heather!

Your daughter is so pretty!  What a sweet smile she has, It looks like she had a nice birthday!  I have a very good Christian friend from upperstate NY!  I am very partial to most New Yorkers, my kind stepdad was from the Bronx and as I mentioned my good friend is from upperstate.

It’s good to read the Bible from cover to cover because it’s then that we see the entire character of God and as you said, we see that Jesus is there throughout.  : )   Thanks for your comment, I understand.  We have to listen to that still small voice don’t we, and discern what the Lord would have us to say and just as importantly what not to say. : )

    Blessings!

  • Hello!  I am still on vacation, and am only able to be on a library computer for a few minutes.  I am sorry I don’t have time to read your post, but I plan to catch up as soon as I am back in Texas again.  I just wanted to say thank you for the comments!  :D   My trip is going wonderfully, I am having so much fun!

P.S. Your daughter is so pretty! :)

  • It took me a very long time to learn that He’s always in control…but your are so right. I love the pics. I love mountains!! Been to the Smokey Mountains and then to Mt. Ranier a couple of times. Gorgeous! I honestly do not understand how anyone can look around them and not see Him.

Hope you’re having a good weekend!

    God bless you!!

  • nice neighbor bear there. Hope you have some extra honey….. rex

    remember to pray ALL ways…

  • Wow, a bear!  The wildest things that my parents get in Schenectady are squirrels or an occasional deer.

  • I lived in Orange County NY and we used to go to Bear Mountain about 45 minutes away, tada, A BEAR!!  Cool!!

ryc, It is kind of aggravating when several things are going on but oh well, just have to have a good attitude and know that God is in control.  I am really enjoying that book, started reading it last night and almost done with it today, I can’t put it down!!

    Have a great weekend,

    Mike

  • Hi Heather, Thanks for answering my questions. I’m working on the ones you asked me for my post this evening. 1. You live in a beautiful area! We have wooded areas around us where we live, too ~ but no bears. We see lots of deer, raccoons, squirrels, possum, and skunk.   I too love nature so much; We have such an awesome Creator God!! We do NOT have mountains. I’ve been in mountainous areas before, & know how beautiful they are ~ how wonderful to be able to experience them every day! Your daughter really is pretty! I actually saw her and forgot to look behind her until your comment under the pix, then went back to see the background of the picture. 2. I kind of had a feeling that your answer was going to be Israel. It would be neat to see all of the places that Jesus was in – firsthand! I think that could definitely inspire worship ~ but so do the forests, mountains, etc. 3. I definitely understand the joy of reading through the Bible! It is so cool how God speaks to us whatever HE wants to get across to us, no matter what part of the Bible we are reading in at any time. I too enjoy seeing Jesus throughout the entire Bible, and seeing how God always keeps His promises & fulfills His Word! You have tackled some tough books ~ right here in Xanga posts! Revelation, for example. The  prophetic books tend to be the toughest for me.  Well, I’m going to give some serious thought about question #2 that you asked me (I’m such a book lover!). I’ll post sometime tonight after church. ~ Your sister in Christ ~ Carolyn
