  • When God wakes me up at three o’clock I know that I have to do a bit of prayer. I still have to work a bit on the sitting and waiting for God’s response. Seems that is the part I am still weak in, and it is the part that is the most important.

    Can’t yet fall back to sleep, so thought I would share an old hymn with you. Last Sunday Pastor Don was cantering across the stage singing the refrain of this hymn. It was perfect for it was 5th Sunday, which in our church is the time when the kids put on skits for the church. They were setting up the puppet ministry, which was so awesome a production, that they are going to give a repeat performance this Sunday, God willing. Anyway, after a bit, Pastor Don asked us to reach under the seats and pull out the red hymnal and turn to a particular page – usually our praise and worship team sings from foils. Anyway, not growing up in church, I don’t know all the old hymns, and I exclaimed, “I didn’t know this was a real hymn”. Pastor Don laughed because he knew that I thought he had just been joking around. It is a kid’s song, but I really hope to one day be a sunbeam.

    I’ll Be A Sunbeam
    Hymn Lyrics

    Jesus wants me for a sunbeam,
    To shine for Him each day;
    In every way try to please Him,
    At home, at school, at play.

    Refrain

    A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
    Jesus wants me for a sunbeam;
    A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
    I’ll be a sunbeam for Him.

    Jesus wants me to be loving,
    And kind to all I see;
    Showing how pleasant and happy
    His little one can be.

    Refrain

    I will ask Jesus to help me
    To keep my heart from sin,
    Ever reflecting His goodness,
    And always shine for Him.

    Refrain

    I’ll be a sunbeam for Jesus;
    I can if I but try;
    Serving Him moment by moment,
    Then live with Him on high.

    Refrain

  • Oh, Heather, I remember that song!!!!!  What an awesome message it has for each of us–young or old or in between!!!!  I accept that challenge today to be a sunbeam for my Lord!  God bless you, dear sister!!!!!!  With much love and many prayers, paula

  • I remember singing it as a child. Nice memory

  • I have never heard that song before but I like it. I want to be a sunbeam.

    Love ya, Darlena

  • In our church, The Salvation Army, we have a program for young girls called “Sunbeams.”  It’s very similar to Brownies – they have meetings, earn badges and wear uniforms, etc.  The big difference is that our program is Biblically based. It’s more of a Christian education program.  This hymn is, of course, their theme song!  :)

  • It was and is a great song!  thanks for the reminder.

  • I grew up singing that one! Thanks for the reminder of a good song!

  • Along with several others, I grew up singing that. It took me back to those days. I love the phrase, “ever reflecting His goodness.” Isn’t that a great goal? Lord, make me like You.

  • I remember the song as well, thanks for the memory

  • Working in a nursing home.. I became friends with this old man. He had his pants up to his waist. So his socks showed on the bottom. He had a balding head and round glasses. He was always happy. And picked up his walker when he walked lol. Well.. One day he sung that song you just wrote down. I’ve asked him many times if he would sing that song to me again. He always did. He has never left my heart. The song even though mostly for children has a deep truth to it. Just as Jesus loves me. I believe I will see him someday in Heaven. and when I do…I’m going to thank him for singing that to a new babe in Christ. I now understand it’s meaning :)
