Month: April 2006

  • I took massive notes on Friday and was asked by Pastor Don to type up what he was teaching. These are the notes I took and how I wrote them up. I am putting them up here now, but please know, after Pastor Don reads them, if there are any changes I will include them. I think the teaching is important enough to share now. Hope you enjoy the teaching and have an awesome weekend!

One new note: From Pastor Don’s book Christianese: the language of the believers, he comments under the definiton of new tongues, “Finally, remember that what you believe does not determine what God can and cannot do. What you believe only limits what you can do. Spiritual gifts and miracles happen today, and will continue until he comes.” Page 10

God will be judging His church, he will not be reviving the dead churches, but will judge them. We have a choice as a church, to do a self exam and repent or to disappear. Our churches need an obedience to the Love relationship with Christ. God is not looking at the style of worship, but at the heart of worship. While some may have a calling for mega churches, it is dependent on who is being glorified when churches are growing – is it for the glory of the pastor or for the glory of God.

In this day and age the harvest is not the internal church but the external church. Inside churches there needs to be a heart for God, and this will be carried to the outside world – so that revival can come in communities, not just within the church walls. Many within our churches today are not being taught properly. God is looking for a harvest of the spirit by God’s spirit, and it is written on the hearts and minds of the worshippers.

Many deny the supernatural movement of God. In every church today there are believers and non-believers. Just because a person has all the right movements, all the right words, all the right Bible knowledge, and acts Holy does not mean that they are a believer. There are two camps across all denominational lines, those that have the look and sound of belief and an intellectual comprehension of God, and those who not only have head knowledge, but the knowledge is in the heart of the believer. Non-believers say that the signs and wonders died with the apostles and the early church, they question Mark 16:14-18.

                            14) Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table;

and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart,

because they did not believe those who had seen Him

after He had risen. 15) And He said to them, “Go into all the

world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16) He who

believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not

believe will be condemned. 17)  And these signs will follow those

who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they

will speak with new tongues; 18) they will take up serpents; and

                            if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them;

they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. Mark 16:14-18

In verse 14, Jesus was rebuking his 11 disciples. This was not a group of people he just met, they had served in close proximity with Jesus, had watched every aspect of His life, saw the healings, watched the food be multiplied, the storms quenched, the dead raised. They had seen miracle after miracle, and yet they were operating in unbelief and hardness of heart. Even in the camp of Jesus’ closest followers there was a division because of unbelief. The refusal to believe Jesus is hardness of heart.

There is a connection between willingness and believing. People seem to think that believing is magical, that it happens without effort. They think belief is like turning on a light switch. They seem to think that they don’t have to have anything to do with their belief. Jesus is saying to them, you saw enough miracles to be able to believe and yet you choose not to believe. That is why He rebuked them. You can almost imagine Jesus saying to himself, “How can I turn my legacy over to a group of eleven guys who refuse to believe?”

As we grew up we were conditioned and our conditioning affects our beliefs. Even when we are taught the truth, often we still keep doing and believing things that we have been trained in the past to do and believe.  When we are operating with a mix of right and wrong thinking we must search the scriptures to see what is true and right. When our conditioning and wrong beliefs are threatened we often turn to argument, reproof, and have hearts that embrace unbelief as a belief solution, refusing to embrace the truth.

Jesus spoke to his disciples about the leaven of the Pharisees, Matthew 16:5-12 “Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadduces.’ And they reasoned among themselves saying, ‘It is because we have taken no bread.’ But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, ‘O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up? How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? –but  to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadduceess.’” Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Jesus rebuked the Scribes and Pharisees for their lack of belief. Mark 1:15 “…The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

What was the gospel that they were to believe? Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

He was concerned that, after all the miracles the disciples saw, they still did not get it. In Mark 9, regarding the demon possessed boy, Jesus says in verse 19 “…Oh faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.” And it is belief that is necessary for a healing to occur, because Jesus turned to the father and said in verse 23 “….If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Note, Jesus did not say “If you can believe, SOME THINGS are possible, and he said to HIM WHO BELIEVES, which implies that to anyone who believes, all things are possible.  And God and Jesus can work with honesty. The father says to Jesus in verse 24 “Lord I believe; help my unbelief!” The responsibility of believing rests on us, and what we choose to believe.

Romans 1:18 says, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”

This is a strong admonition, and it is not based on a direction to keep the law, which the passage could seem to imply at a quick glance.  We have to ask ourselves what the criterion for righteousness is, and we see that in Romans 4:3 “For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for RIGHTEOUSNESS.” When a person speaks unbelief into a believer’s life they are suppressing the truth in unrighteousness.

Deuteronomy 31: 29-30 “For I know that after my death you will become utterly corrupt, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you. And evil will befall you in the later days, because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger through the work of your hands.”

For God says in Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

When the Israelites started doing things through their own hands, not believing and depending on God, not relying on God, turning to false idols, it was then that God’s wrath became apparent. We are now in the Later Days that Moses talks about, and in those days we are seeing more and more unbelief, and more false teachings coming from the pulpit. We have moved away from believing God and have put him into a box of our unbelief. Deuteronomy 28 talks about the blessings and curses of obeying God, obedience brings blessings, disobedience brings curses. And yet God, as Paul tells us, gave us the Law as a schoolmaster so that we can realize our need for a savior. The Israelites fell into the sin of unbelief as Numbers 13 shows. This was when the 12 spies were sent into the promised land and two came back with a good report and believed that God would give the victory, the rest came back with a negative report. All saw that the land was filled with milk, honey, and fruit beyond their wildest imaginations. Because of their unbelief none of the Israelites except Joshua and Caleb would set foot into the promised land. They died in the wilderness of their unbelief.

At what point is the work of your hands going to translate to God is able? Pick up your miracles every day. Participate in the miracles and go and conquer giants in the land. Cooperate in miracles, out of belief, and work with God. God is able to do it.  Stop doubting. The gifts of God are still in effect. Use your hands, believe that God is able to work through you. Participate with God to do miracles. Titus 1:16 “They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.” What are the works? John 14:12-14 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.”

Who is Jesus talking to in the above passage HE WHO BELIEVES. He did not say, my 11 disciples, or limit it to anyone. He spoke about he who believes. And he assures them that they will do the works that Jesus did (heal sick, raise the dead, cast out demons) and GREATER works. What holds us back from doing these things… our unbelief and erroneous teachings. Those who say that these miracles are not in effect today persist in a form of ungodliness that God does not honor.

Where we have gone wrong today is that we embrace people of unbelief, not lovingly challenge them to come to a point of belief so that they can achieve their healing. God is not pleased with unbelief, it is not a higher badge of honor to “suffer” for Christ. How can you love someone and not point out to them that they do not have enough faith. If they need to raise their level of faith would it not be more loving to hit the floor and pray with them, help them find the passages in the Bible that will raise their level of faith, and keep persisting in praying until the victory is won. We must rely on what God says and not tolerate the language of unbelief, language that Jesus rebuked. All of Jesus’ parables point out to persistence – the widow and the judge, pray without ceasing, knock. Mark 10:23-27 “Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved? But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God, for WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.” Note, God did not say SOME things are possible, He said, ALL things are possible.

When we read the Bible, we must take the word of two or more witnesses. We have seen similar scriptures in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and others. If we persist in our belief that miracles and healings died with the apostles, then it is our choice to persist in unbelief.  Paul said in Romans 1:18-20 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so they are without excuse. There is no way God is going to change his eternal power, the nature of the power is ETERNAL, it does not end, is not limited.

Everyone who comes to God comes in the belief of his eternal salvation, they believe God’s power is manifested in them and affects them in the belief of salvation. Yet, through hardness of their hearts, they have decided that God’s eternal power for healing and miracles isn’t available.  They teach a theology of excuses. They have shut their hearts to the word of truth in this regard, and selectively read the scriptures. Here is a good example, Psalm 103. (with comments in plain text, the Psalm in italic).

    Psalm 103:1-5

Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! (no problem there, we all agree that we should bless the Lord). Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: (no problem, we should remember God’s benefits. But notice the punctuation mark, it is a colon – a colon denotes a list of items, so now we are going to read a list of ALL of the benefits that God gives us). Who forgives ALL (words in all caps is my emphasis) our iniquities, (praise God for forgiveness of sin, now look what comes next, and is sandwiched between two easy to agree with benefits) Who heals ALL your diseases, (he did not say heals SOME of your diseases, he said ALL your diseases – so many pastors can believe for forgiveness of sin, but fall short in believing that God can heal all diseases – yes there will be sickness, but we need to begin to exercise our faith for healing – healing is possible if we believe), Who redeems your life from destruction (praise God, no disagreement there – for salvation helps to change our life course from destruction to salvation), Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (an elderly eagle beats his beak off on the rocks – our rock is Jesus, and spends time unable to speak or eat until the new beak grows in, when the new beak grows in the eagle is restored. We need to beat off our beaks, for out of our mouths come words of unbelief. We need to stop speaking untruth, and start eating of the Word of God until what comes out of our mouths agrees with God’s Word, then we will be renewed.)

It is important to realize that God will heal us. How He heals us could involve many ways, instantaneous healing through faith, we could take time to come into agreement with his word and the healing takes time until we link our faith to God’s truth, we could be healed naturally through God’s healing built into our bodies, we could link our faith with a doctor and God to bring about a healing, and some might die, being healed in Heaven. What we need to remember though is that God is in the healing business, and as we learn to trust Him and His word, and link our faith to the Word of truth, we can speed the process of our healing. Sickness does not glorify God, but walking in joy and health is a good testimony to God. God loves us and wants the best for us, and His best for us is health and joy and peace of mind.

To get the benefits of God mentioned in Psalm 103 we have to remember that they are eternal benefits, we can claim them anytime, when we release our faith for the benefit. The release of benefits could be instantaneous, three weeks, three months later. It depends upon what we can believe God for.

In a Bible with lots of footnotes, the passage Mark 16:9-20 has this footnote: “these are bracketed in NU-Text as not original. They are lacking in Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus, although nearly all other manuscripts of Mark contain them. We have to ask ourselves a question, why would these verses be left out of some texts, even though NEARLY ALL other manuscripts of Mark contain them. Perhaps the persons who left them out decided that the text was unbelievable and chose not to put it in. What we have to ask ourselves is if the same teaching shows up elsewhere in the Bible. Even if we tore this passage out of Mark and discarded it, we would still see in other places in the Scripture such as John 14:12-14. Don’t forget too that these miracles were seen by others who were not disciples. The disciples came to Jesus in Mark 9:38-41 complaining that someone was casting out demons in Christ’s name, but he did not follow Christ like the disciples. Jesus answered, “Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me. For he who is not against us is on our side.”

It goes without saying that it is not US who do the miracles, but God who does the healings. We must have faith in God, not faith in faith. But having faith in God means that we believe ALL his Words. We must not err in limiting the works that God does on earth through our unbelief.

Another challenge to the Mark 16 passage involves some churches who have taken this scripture to heart and handle serpents, drink poison, etc. Truth is, relatively few in those churches die from doing this, but it is not the heart of what Jesus was teaching. We have only to look at Paul who did not let the bite of a deadly asp stop his work of spreading God’s word. He shook off the asp in the fire, and the fact that he did not die from the poison caused many to be saved. The mis-handling of the Word of God by some does not invalidate the truth of the Word.

In the Word, we have seen the apostles demonstrating the miracles and healings of Jesus, we saw a Jew who converted – Paul demonstrate great miracles, we have seen others like Ananias who was told to go and restore Saul/Paul’s sight, , the 72 who were not apostles, Stephen. It is time we join the ranks of these believers and act on the truths that Christ taught. To go and do the miracles he has told us we are able to do, in His name. Stop limiting God. It is time that we stop losing heart and as Psalm 27:13 says, “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” In these end days, it is time that we see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

  • Grrrrrr. Can’t get a book put up on the site, but I want to share an incredible book with you. I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist by Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek.

It is an incredible apologetic tool, answering a variety of question. It is highly readable, you can give it to an atheist to read, and it also is very good at strengthening faith in areas where you may need some shoring up. I have chuckled so much in reading this book that I encourage you to acquire it.

It covers many topics that atheists would debate, from truth, to evolution, to creation, to relativism, etc.

In a chapter regarding Relativism, that there is no absolute truth and no absolute moral values, the authors give a funny example that shows a student that asserted that there were no absolute values, but that they really did not believe that.

    From Page 173-174

A professor at a major university in Indiana gave one of his relativistic students the same experience not long ago. The professor, who was teaching a class in ethics, assigned a term paper to his students. He told the students to write on any ethical topic of their choice, requiring each student only to properly back up his or her thesis with reasons and documentation.
One student, an atheist, wrote eloquently on the topic of moral relativism. He argued, “All morals are relative; there is no absolute standard of justice or rightness; it’s all a matter of opinion; you like chocolate, I like vanilla,” and so on. His paper provided both his reasons and his documentation. It was the right length, on time, and stylishly presented in a handsome blue folder.
After the professor read the entire paper, he wrote on the front cover, “F, I don’t like blue folders!” When the student got the paper back he was enraged. He stormed into the professor’s office and protested. “‘F! I don’t like blue folders!’ That’s not fair! That’s not right! That’s not just! You didn’t grade the paper on its merits!”
Raising his hand to quiet the bombastic student, the professor calmly retorted, “Wait a minute. Hold on. I read a lot of papers. Let me see…wasn’t your paper the one that said there is no such thing as fairness, rightness, and justice?”
         “Yes,” the student answered.
“Then what’s this you say about me not being  fair, right, and just?” the professor asked. “Didn’t your paper argue that it’s all a matter of taste? You like chocolate, I like vanilla?”
The student replied, “Yes, that’s my view.”
“Fine then,” the professor responded. “I don’t like blue. You got an F!”
Suddenly the lightbulb went on in the student’s head. He realized he really did believe in moral absolutes. He at least believed in justice. After all, he was charging his professor with injustice for giving him an F simply because of the color of the folder. That simple fact defeated his entire case for relativism.
The moral of the story is that there are absolute morals. And if you really want to get relativists to admit it, all you need to do is treat them unfairly. Their reactions will reveal the Moral Law written on their hearts and minds.”

The book then goes on and give more detailed arguments and shows clearly the fallacies of some of these doctrines. But the examples that are peppered throughout the book help to make the book readable.

I am typing up notes from Pastor Don’s  Bible study from today and before I submit it for you to read I want to listen to my tape to make sure I got all the details accurate. It was a detailed study.

    Heather

  • Sunday when Pastor Don taught he caused me to chuckle – His first comment was so funny, “The Last Supper (Passover) was not a termination supper.”

Pentecost was a great promise God offered us, CRAZY PROMISES, promises way beyond what we can comprehend. CRAZY – beyond our normal, “you can inherit the earth,” promises of God. Definition of CRAZY – departing from proportion or moderation, consumed by enthusiasm or excitement, burning fire for promises of God, excited, intensely involved or preoccupied to the point of not being sensible. God is looking for excited beyond normal proportions., to push the bonds of what is sensible, preoccupied wit God so no one can take your focus away from Him.

We then looked at a Bible passage that changed all of Bible theology for all time. Romans Chapter 4. (Heather’s note – Beth Moore in her study Believing God had us read this chapter out loud, her hope was that we would do it at least 28 times in 10 weeks, because the teachings in this were so important for us, and showed us what belief was like).

Romans 4:1-3 What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

When you obey God, God gives you grace, not works, but empowerment to do. Abraham was righteous, not for what he did but because he BELIEVED God.

While we try to obey God, there are times when we sin. Some in the church discard those who sin, forgetting that we are being perfected by faith, not works. Our behavior will come to line up with what we believe. (Heather’s note – this is not a license to sin, because as we seek relationship with God and love God, we will choose to obey Him.)

Remember Grace is not limited to unmerited favor (that is Mercy), grace comes with a power from God to succeed.  Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Our job is to get people to Jesus, He will clean them up. (Heather’s note, near Montauk Point there is a church that is said to be the last church before the point, and there is a sign in front of the church, “Go fish, you catch them, God cleans them.”)

Pastor Don pointed out that he will keep on dreaming big dreams, not seemingly attainable dreams, but huge dreams that only God can fulfill. We tend to limit God to our own understanding, but God is so much bigger than our wildest, crazy imagination.

We need to stand on the promises of the Word of God, believe that God will keep those promises.

Romans 4: 4-8 “Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.”

David figured it out, David- a man after God’s own heart, realized that faith in God even though He sinned, made him covered by the mercy of God. Remember that David killed Uriah, had an adulterous relationship with Bathsheba, and when he went to God, he realized that He had sinned and humbly begged forgiveness, realizing that he had sinned against God.

We have to have the faith to believe that we can receive from God. Our flesh is shaky, and if we rely on what we perceive in our flesh, we will easily be deceived by our senses. We have to have the faith that if God said it, God will do it.

When the self-righteous judge, they have already sinned. They are assuming that by following a list of rules and regulations that they will be very pleasing to God. While God’s rules are meant for our good, and as we learn about God we will begin to shape ourselves with these rules, it isn’t wholly about following the rules to the minutest point, it is about the heart and following the rules from love of God. Following rules was able to be done by the Pharisees down to the tiniest seed count for the tithe, but following rules and giving from a heart of love is what pleases God.

Romans 4:9-10 “Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. How then was it accounted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised.” Remember that the sign of circumcision was given to Abraham long after he obeyed God, he obeyed God, not knowing where he was going, just trusting God. He was righteous by obeying God.

Romans 4:11 “And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised.”

Before God gave the Law to Moses, before God told Abraham to be circumcised, he believed in God, and God counted that as righteousness. Don’t forget that there were no Israelites at this time, that Abraham was a gentile, just as we are gentiles. We as gentiles are grafted into God’s kingdom because of the righteousness of Jesus.

Faith sustained Abraham before he was a Jew, and sustains us as new testament sons and daughters of Abraham. Faith helps us to circumcise our hearts, cut away the flesh of the heart and believe God, it isn’t act right – it is have a believing heart (remembering that what we believe we will be acting on). We have blocked ourselves up to not believe the crazy promises of God. God is better than us. When He makes a promise, He keeps it. We are constantly grading God, implying that God can’t resolve a problem. We should be giving God and A+. Here are a few key verses, Isaiah 52 the promise of the Savior; Romans 4:13 he is the father of all who believe, Romans 4:16 “…Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is father of us all.”

Moses gave the Hebrews the law, but the law was meant to be a tutor, to show us our need for the savior. No one can live up to the law, not sinning once – no one but Jesus.

Romans 4:17-25 (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed – God who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; who contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “so shall your descendents be.” And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was able to perform. And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.”

Praise God, we too will be justified as we believe on Him who God sent. Remember that Sarah and Abraham were too old to give birth, yet God was able to quicken her womb, and she gave birth to a son – Isaac. He had to believe for a long time before that happened. (Heather’s note – Abram was given the name Abraham by God, and he had to go around calling himself Abraham – father of many nations. I am certain that when people asked him how many children he had and he said none for year after year after year quite a few eyebrows were raised – but Abram believed God in the face of seeming impossibility. That is why he is honored so).

Because of Abraham’s belief, we are able to receive the promises of Jesus, so many of them. Just read John 13 onward to see some of the many promises we will receive.

John 13: 19 if we receive Him, God receives us.
John 13:34 love of the brethren
John 14:3 Jesus has prepared a place for us in Heaven
John 14:6 Jesus is the way to come to the Father
John 14:12 When we believe in Jesus we will do greater works than Him.
John 14:16 The promise of the Helper (Comforter, Holy Spirit)
John 15 Grafted into the vine, love and joy perfected,
John 16:33 Comfort in tribulation because He has overcome the world
John 17 – Jesus prays for us
John 17:12 has not lost any
    John 17:13 joy

And on and on and on, even into Acts

Pastor Don says, regarding God’s promises, “God said it, I believe it, that settles it” God is not done with us. Let your neighbors see these crazy promises in you, let the tests and trials not seem like terrible tests and trials but adventures that God will see you through. Serve the Lord with gladness, be the exception, not the rule. Listen and believe that He can do His will effortlessly. Get out of your mind, you’ve been in there long enough, start acting on His promises, not limiting His power.

The Psalm that Pastor Don shared with us was Psalm 145, oh how comforting that Psalm is, the verse that stood out to me was, verse 18 “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.”

Pastor Don allows us to teach from the pulpit too, and Michael spoke about the Good Samaritan. I will share that tomorrow, I just love how we can look at the Word of God and find depth of wisdom in it, and new treasures are unearthed. God is such an awesome God.

Here’s hoping you have a blessed day!

  • Pretty soon the whole discipleship manual will be on my blog (she says smiling). I am replying to a comment from the previous entry, and the best way to do it is through a few pages from you know who’s Discipleship Manuel (Pastor Don Moore). I have to tell you that I am so very blessed to be sitting under his teaching. He has helped me to grow so much. God is so good to have brought me to Living Word Chapel/ In His Name Ministry. This comes from pages 95 – 97 (long entry, but goooood)  But let me tell you that the teachings from Sunday are also good.

Tools of the Trade – Good News and Signs

In Mark 16:15-17, Jesus gives disciples clear instructions on what the Tools of the Trade are: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel (Good News) to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe:” The NIV translation reads, “these signs will accompany those who believe:” In other words, the disciples, the ones that are going to multiply, have two main weapons going for them: Signs and Good News.  You tell the Good News, God will confirm it with signs and you will multiply. Signs and Preaching Good News will get the job done.
***You do some believing, and God will do some accompanying.
Jesus goes on to delineate the signs. He says, “In My name, they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (V 17-18) Is that just the pastor of the church? No! – That’s any and all disciples, any and all believers have these signs – and they have the Good News! The Good News is Isaiah 61, paraphrased; ‘My God is a good God Who does good things for His children.’ Let’s read beginning with verse 1, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (v. 1-2)
So…the kid is in Sunday school class and he needs prayer. I don’t expect somebody to run up and get an elder. No, I expect the teacher to say, “In the name of Jesus, let’s pray.” If you notice in verse 18, “they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them.” this is on the natural level as well as the spiritual level. Yes, if a snake bites, for example, the Apostle Paul – a deadly viper bit him (Acts 28), hooked itself right onto him -he shook it off into the fire – then everyone sat back and waited for him to die. And he just went on eating his dinner and then they praised the Lord. A sign. After this, many received the Good News and were saved. In this example, the unbelievers saw a sign, and then Paul preached to them the Good News.
Now that the Old Testament has been fulfilled, you are acceptable to the Father, through Jesus the Christ. Anyone who does not accept Jesus as Truth, will be condemned by God. You have to speak the whole Gospel -there is a Heaven to be gained, but there is also a hell to be shunned. This is the summized meaning of Isaiah 61:1 & 2.
Now let’s get back to Mark 16, Jesus is talking about deadly poison, natural and spiritual. He’s referring to the fact that we must bless our food to protect us physically and spiritually. I can remember years ago, when I was working at a rehabilitation agency, the Gateway Industries, we used to go to this greasy diner to eat. On one particular day the mayonnaise was bad. At that particular time, I was not in the habit of saying Grace in public. Boy do I wish I had said Grace then, because that rancid mayonnaise, when it hit down in my stomach tow and a half hours later – I felt like I was going to die. I’m telling you, it was painful.
I believe sincerely that since then I have eaten bad food, but I believe, without a doubt, that the Lord has worked many miracles to keep me from getting sick. The Spirit purifies the food or warns us not to ingest it. That’s what He is talking about in the material realm. In Mark 16:18 Jesus tells us, “if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them.” This is especially important on the mission field. Prayer in Faith will protect us from bad food or water, and the Sprit gives us wisdom in these matters.
In the spiritual realm, He’s talking about drinking in a bad teaching. You drink in (ingest, listen to, take) some spiritual poison. When Jesus talks about serpents and scorpions, He’s talking about the work of satan, evil demons and their workings. Let’s say some believing Christian says to you, “Here, read this book, it’s really great stuff!” You’re going along, and it’s really, really great, and you get to page 55, and on page 55 it says, “While Jesus was in India, He went into a cave…” (The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ). All of a sudden, Jesus is in some cave with a  bunch of women carrying out some hocus-pocus. Deadly poison. But some of the book reads really nice. The book shows Jesus as loving, kind and just a wonderful guy, but not Lord of lords. Wait a minute! Something in your heart, because you’ve got the Holy Ghost, will say, “Wait a minute, there’s something wrong about this book. There’s something not right about this ‘poison.’”
You’re reading something, or you’re sitting in church and somebody gets off of Scripture. They get off into their own opinion, and their opinion is that if you don’t listen to them, you’re going to hell. You’re drinking in that deadly poison and you go, “Huh????” You’re listening to the radio…and some guy says to a woman whose husband divorced her, and he has married someone else, and the radio guy says to her that she can never marry again. Something should go off and say, “Huh??? Why can’t she marry again? If she’s divorced and he’s remarried, why can’t she?” And something should say, “Let me check that out in Scripture.”
And then you go through eh Scriptures and you find out that Scripture says that if the unbeliever leaves, or where Jesus said except for marital unfaithfulness – you’re free to marry (I Cor Ch. 7 and Matt. Ch 19) And you say, “That was a deadly poison…I almost drank that in. ‘She can never marry,’ sounded good, had a ring of truth but…! I almost believed that!”That’s what I’m talking about. When Jesus says, “if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them…” He means you!!! Meaning the Holy Spirit in you will bring you out, into the truth. The Spirit and the Word must agree. If adultery and fornication and divorce are sins and all sins, save one, can be forgiven, then 1 Tim. 4:1-3 must be right: “in latter times some will depart from the faith…forbidding to marry.”
You have to believe that you will not get into theological error and stay there. You have to believe that the Holy Spirit will direct you. you have to believe that supernatural signs and power will accompany the Good News. You have to believe that the message itself is supernatural and will produce disciples. Jesus said to teach them “all things that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:20) – well that’s what we’re going to do, examine what He taught His disciples by example and demonstration.
The debate over signs and wonders is a waste of time. Consider that we believe the preaching of the Word changes peoples’ hearts, and that being Born Again is a wonder of wonders – Jesus will come to lead our lives and change us. How can we believe that great miracle of being saved and dismiss all others? Strange, Jesus never had anyone pray the sinners’ prayer or did He ever say, “After I leave and the Apostles of the Lamb leave the earth, you can discount all other signs and wonders.” Some things are just too big and important to surmise on the basis of conjecture – we need proof. The proof on the experience side is overwhelming.

Jesus still heals and does signs and wonders today. The only people that are against it and don’t believe it, are those who have never experienced or have denied this experience and disbelieve the testimony of others. In the final analysis:
***If you don’t believe, then signs don’t follow you. Jesus said so.

Due to a spirit of religion people conclude, “I’m a most excellent, good Christian and it never happened to me, so these people are of the devil or deceived.” Jesus never put on a miracle show for a Pharisee then and He still doesn’t now. Jesus said, “And these signs will follow those who believe” (Mark 16:17) He did not say they would follow those who don’t believe and are skeptical. People that say, “I’ll believe it when I see it” are usually wrong. Their skeptical attitude causes them to be skeptical about what they see. Many people see and still do not believe for believing is of the heart, not the head.
Lastly, let us look at ignorance of the Law of Faith. Heb. 11:6 “and without faith it is impossible to please God.” ‘ My mother was a good Christian, she prayed and still ain’t healed-so God doesn’t do healing anymore…’ That doesn’t prove God doesn’t heal–but it may prove that some “good Christians” may not have God pleasing Faith. It may prove that God isn’t moved by our goodness, but is moved by our Faith.
How can a supernatural God cease to do the ‘super’? How can a good God cease to do the ultimate good? How can a loving Father not show compassion for 2000 years to His own children? How can a Bible believer believe something that’s soo important without one clear scripture to refute Mark 16, Isaiah 53, Acts 10:38, Hebrews 11 and 13, James 5, 2 Peter 2:24; Mark 11:23-24; and all the testimonies of millions who have been healed, seen angels, heard the Spirit Voice, spoken Words of Knowledge and Wisdom, seen great acts of Faith and prayed in Tongues, had Tongues with interpretation, seen visions, been drunk in the Spirit, fallen under the power of God, been delivered from illnesses and addictions, prophesied the future, and lived clean moral lives as good as or better than those who stopped at being Born Again? If God needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Moses needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Mary and Joseph needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Elizabeth and Zacharias needed signs and wonders, we do too. If the 12 ‘sent ones’ needed signs and wonders, we do too. If the 72 ‘sent ones’ needed signs and wonders, we do too. If the 120 at Pentecost needed signs and wonders, we do too. If the 3,000 at Pentecost needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Cornelius the Centurion needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Paul and Silas needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Charles Finney needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Smith Wigglesworth needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Katherine Kuhlmann needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Oral Roberts needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Kenneth Hagin needed signs and wonders, we do too. If Benny Hinn needed signs and wonders, we do too.
If satan is going to counterfeit signs and wonders, then let’s give him some real great stuff to copy – because Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to My father”(John 14:12) Don’t let anyone with an argument take this great God given Tool out of the disciple’s Tool Box.
To remove signs and wonders is to leave us helpless against a supernatural
devil, and that was not God’s plan!

  • Here is another entry that God has put on my heart to put up from Pastor Don Moore’s Discipleship Manual regarding demons. It comes from pages 153 and 154

    Setting the Captives Free
When in a meeting where emotions are high and many manifestations of God’s power are shown (deliverances, healings, signs and wonders), know that demonic spirits, if present, are looking for opportunity to manifest and occupy. Deliverance meetings set people free, but freed spirits look for somewhere else to go – “watch and pray”, and protect. If a demon of depression is cast out in a meeting,  you can be sure that before leaving the building he scans the room for someone that has a problem with depression.
In the Book of Acts, Chapter 19, we are told that the sons of Sceva were beaten by a demon possessed man when they tried to use the Name of Jesus improperly. The Scevas were not authorized by the Holy Spirit to use Jesus’ Name and the Holy Spirit was not present to protect them. Many Christians do not respect the laws of transference laying on of hands and anointing, and get into trouble. Personal sin cannot be present when we are going to deal with demons – sins must be confessed and forgiven or the demon can accuse and counter attack. Pride must not be the motive – “showing off” has no place in warfare.
The unction (powerful leading) of the Holy Spirit must be present, as the Holy Spirit is the power to “protect us” and overpower the demonic. The demonic can overpower the natural, but not the Holy Spirit and the Name of Jesus.
I remember once being told by a demon that the host (person) had invited the demon in and that the demon had his permission to stay. When the host’s will changed, then out came the demon.
Another demon threatened me, “I’ll tear you up!” He snarled, “Who do you think you are?” I replied, “I’m nobody, but the Lord I serve is Jesus and you will do nothing to me!” The demon then made the host leave the room. The Holy Spirit urged me to follow him. I cornered him in another room and asked if the host wanted freedom. He responded, “Yes!” I then told the demon he could not speak and he had to come out – and immediately he did. This young man had been very violent and super strong, but now as a tender, graceful, loving teenager.
I did not  touch him until after the demon was cast out. Notice in the Scripture that Jesus did not lay hands on any demon possessed person, yet I am appalled to see Christians “playing Bible” and touching anyone and everyone. This “religious tradition” is in error, and many people are opening themselves to attack. I saw a man who wanted to be noticed and praised as a prayer warrior so he, unaware, laid hands on and repeatedly prayed over a demon-possessed woman. They were laughing and “playing prayer.” My warnings were not heeded and the man picked up a spirit of depression that took about 6 months to get free of.
We have two contrasting examples: In the first situation, I was under the unction and protection of the Holy Spirit and, though the young man’s demon had subdued many hospital orderlies, he feared and obeyed the Name of Jesus and that power. The other is an example of error upon error. We must fear God and respect the things of the supernatural. Touch can lead to transference and then warfare. Without a strong anointing, this is dangerous and improper.
Finally, no one can stand for Jesus against satan without his sins confessed and curbing of the sins of their flesh. The accuser of the brethren, satan (Rev. 12), can gain legal right to attack and disable. The heart and the eye must be pure and focused on Jesus.
We must recognize that most of Jesus’ great miracles were done in private or small groups with just a few people. This is because the unbelief of the group can hold back the blessing and limit faith. There is a place for public displays of power, but only as the unction leads. There is no normal way that patterns how the Holy Spirit will move. Sometimes command, sometimes pray, sometimes oil, sometimes spit, clay, laugh, touch, slap, etc. We are the vessel, not the master, and we must observe the laws and the leading.
We must notice that Jesus sent out the 12 and the 70 and in some cases they got over their heads. Go to the Pastor or other elders and ask who to pray with and when. It is the elder’s job to know, and God has covered them with special anointing in their pasture. The Christian walk can be fun, but it is not a game. Never minister to people at a different church without the head Elder’s approval. The Spirit placed them there and will not override their authority, but satan will. Seek to come into agreement with the prayer leaders – Why are they here? What is the prayer need? What do they want from God? etc. (More on this later). God has laws of transference; know them and respect them.

***Heather’s extra note, and if a demonic force is cast out of a person remember to fill up the empty room with God’s word and discipleship, for Jesus told people that the demon will come back with friends and re-take possession of there is nothing put in place of the outcast demon’s abode.

In the lecture that accompanied this passage

Pastor Don pointed out about King Saul and the demons who possessed him, and how they were trying to destroy the anointed one, David.

He also warned us that if we pound on the devil’s kingdom, he is going to try and get us back, so we have to have a committed will, we have to stay prayed up, we have to make sure we have confessed our sins, and at times the Holy Spirit will bring to mind sins that need confessing.

He also pointed out that if you are in a room full of believers, it is good to ask the Holy Spirit if there is anyone who is vulnerable to that particular demon that needs casting out, if so  it would be better to pray with the person in another room. Pastor Don has said that he also tells the demon that he cannot enter any in the area, in the church, in the parking lot, and also he tells the demon to go where Jesus would send him. We cannot cast a demon to hell, even Jesus let the demons go into the pigs, we have to cast the demon out and make them leave the area.

Remember demons are dis-embodied, and are looking for a host, so we have to make sure that we give them no inroute to oppress us – once we are saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit we can be oppressed by the demons, not possessed.

It is also important to know when you are not trained for a particular spiritual activity, and reach out for the help of a pastor or elder. If you pray for a person, but pray with unbelief, and the healing or deliverance does not come, not only have you not done the person any good, but you may actually have put a barrier in their path, or made it harder for the person who follows to do the work necessary.

    Heather

  • I will get back to Revelation, but good news – Bible studies are starting up again, and today at church there was a phenomenal Bible study and a great sermon to share, so Revelation postings may be less frequent.

Before I get to the posting of Sunday services, I want to share a pretty large passage from Pastor Don Moore’s Discipleship manual regarding demonic activity. This is prompted from someone’s post that I read and I want to put this up as a resource.

The devil Made Me Do It!
Demonic activity can occur at any age in anyone. The greatest saints can come under attack or due to error act upon a lie from the evil one. We should not be overly concerned as the evil one in our midst will always be found out and defeated by the faithful. Too often saints confuse demonic activity with people acting out in their “flesh.” The flesh with its sinful desires (Gal. Ch 5) rises up without any help from satan. Often “The devil made me do it” or “I was under attack” are excuses for out-of-control behavior. In Galatians Chapter 5, we read that self-control is one of the fruits of the Spirit we have, but we must exercise it.
There are people that, without demon influence, are mean, hard to get along with, out of balance and devilish while not devil influenced. Children may learn to be selfish or to throw tantrums to get their way. If they are not corrected, they become infantile adults. A demon sees this behavior and pushes it from selfish behavior into out of control self-destructive behavior, from tantrums to out of control rage. The will power of the person becomes greatly compromised at times and in specific areas, leading to demonic oppression or even possession-almost complete loss of self-control over one’s own will.
People, due to bad habits and wrong thinking open the door for demons to enter. Consider for example, a woman that measures her importance by having a man. Her low self-esteem is wrong thinking and chasing men for validation is a bad habit. Consider she gets saved but doesn’t allow Jesus to be Lord over her personal life in this area. She allows a man that she’s chasing to move into her apartment due to her desperation. She has now opened the door for the possibility of demonic attack.
Usually the convicting power of the Holy Spirit will cause her to consider her situation but bad habits and wrong thinking lead to compromise and hypocrisy. She hides from the “light of the Truth” unaware that devils wait in the darkness. She begins to hear voices that tell her what she wants to hear, and after awhile begins acting upon them, which results in compulsive erratic behavior; demons have gained a foot hold. The sin must be dealt with (boyfriend thrown out) as well as the bad habits and wrong thinking, but only when she goes to  Jesus can we help her.
This is one example of how sin can open the door for the demonic – this is the same with any saint or sinner. Remember demons are bullies and they attack the weak, the sick, the young or the old – anyone that is not protected or poses a threat to their kingdom. As Peter said in 1 Peter 5:8, “your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
Modern psychology has helped demonic activity by putting us all in denial, saying, ‘they are not ill, not demonically influenced or possessed.’ I believed what I had been taught in graduate school. While working as a counselor on a chronic schizophrenic ward in Toledo, Ohio, my thinking was challenged one day when I saw a skinny 16 yr. old boy toss four grown, trained orderlies around the room. I realized that psychological babble and 1500 mg of Thorazine couldn’t help this young boy get free of what was making him unbelievably strong.
Modern psychology has often put labels on behavior that is clearly demonic and has failed to truly help these people. Medication sedates the host’s body and may make it difficult for the demon to act out, but he’s still in there bending or dominating the host’s will. Without all the fancy diagnostic terminology, the Jews of Jesus’ day cut to the chase. If you’re out of your mind and working against your best interest there’s probably a demon somewhere around – and you may need an exorcist, not Prozac or Valium. You may need true salvation, which includes deliverance. You need to put away sin and get the forgiveness of Jesus to get free. If it’s not a question of sin, then it is a manifestation of the demon dominating the weak, and Jesus is till the answer.
The demonic is compulsive, erratic, confused, overly rigid and usually opposed to the things of God. Demonic possession is better described as demonic influence or demonically influenced will power. Note that even the demon possessed an of Gaderenes (Mark 5:6) had enough will power to go to Jesus. He had a legion of demons that could make him super strong and even self destructive, but they couldn’t stop him from going to Jesus. In Acts 16, the slave girl had a fortune telling demon and still had enough will power to follow Paul for days, crying out till deliverance came. The Gaderine demoniac and the slave girl had some will power left but usually they were dominated in many other areas of life.

    devils In The Church
Demon possessed people show up in church when the host has a will to want to get set free, or his will has been dominated and the demon plans to infiltrate, disrupt and destroy, using the host who has yielded his/her will to that end. There are other circumstances and further study is of value for the true disciple. Good study sources are books on thesubject of demons written by Lester Summerall, Kenneth Hagin, and Derek Prince.
We just know it’s God’s will to have victory over the demonic. In these last days the battle lines will become less obscured. Those that are against the message of the Gospel are aggressive and in the open. As persecution increases we must know satan is the source and that he uses people in and out of the church to do his work.
Look for critical whispering spirits that think they see what others are missing. As we read in 2 Cor 11:13-14 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” I call this prideful seed planting. As you walk in love with compassionate care for all the sheep, the demon becomes frustrated and angry, and will manifest. The host will become overt and may exhibit a wide range of behaviors from shouting, self-mutilation, verbal attacks, uncontrollable weeping, to violence. Remember in all cases. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rules of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Eph. 6:12)
Stand on 1 John 4:4 “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” Your counter attack is to identify the will of the host and dominate the foul spirit using the Blood of the Lamb. A person in cooperation with the demon will resist you and flee in order to keep the demon. They will refuse prayer, counseling and avoid you at all costs. I once had a person who flat out told me, “I know what you want to do.” I had invited him to go to my office so I could call on the Lord to rid him of the demon. “I’m not going into the office or sanctuary with you. Maybe later, but now I’m keeping what I got, so I’m leaving,” he said.
People are free moral agents. Through choices they make and through sin they earn the state they are in.This is not the case with children or the weak, and we must set them free. satan is an oppressor and a bully with no sense of fair play. he takes advantage over unprotected children, the weak minded or sinful unsuspecting souls.
People that are hard to get along with may not be demon influenced. They may be just flesh influenced. Signs of a person under demonic influence.
     1) they cannot stay in the service when the power of God is moving
     2) they move contrary to the flow of the Spirit (i.e. loud when everyone is quiet, troubled
         when all is at peace)
     3) they draw attention to themselves at inappropriate times
     4) they fight the Pastor and Elders, but with little cause
     5) they have hate for the Jews and their position with God
     6) they have an unbalanced spiritual self-image, very low self-esteem (God could never
love me), or superiority complex (they’re all hypocrites, but me)
     7) they are unbalanced Scripturally (i.e. everyone should be a prophet, the devil will
get saved, women have no place in the church. etc.
     8) they have contradictory behavior that they refuse to deal with (they say, “I’m the
only true holy one”, yet they continue to fornicate, lie, and refuse to address
         these issues.)
     9) they have recurrent persistent strange illnesses
    10) spiritual paranoia -(thinking, “someone, somewhere is in league with the devil casting
spells against me, and I think it could be the Salvation Army”)
In these last days, “End-Time Discipleship” must involve a knowledge of and dominance over the demonic. Pray for discernment and drive out the demon. If the host is not willing, drive them both out (See 1 Cor. Chapter 5)
Scripture showes that most demons gained entrance through sin, unforgiveness, drug use, resentment, bitterness, anger, hate, rejection of the Truth, generational curses and idol worship. These sins and emotions should be destroyed to remove the demon’s stronghold. This can be done through repentance, prayer, and other means; more on this later.

***When dealing with the demonic, the disciple should always confess:
       1) God hath not given me a spirit of fear.
      2) faith works every time against every demon.
      3) He sent His Word and healed them Psalm 107:20
The church is  the place where demons can come but cannot stay, for there is power in the Blood of Jesus, Amen!

I am hoping that the above is helpful, it is from pages 113-116 of the Discipleship Manuel that was written by Pastor Don Moore, In His Name Ministry. Pastor Don knows and approves of the posts that I am making, and when I see him, I give him copies of what I have posted and your responses to the posts. I always want to make sure that I am presenting him accurately.

Hope you have a blessed Sunday.

    Heather

  • we have a thief at our house

My husband has set out food for the birds, and has delighted in watching the varieties of sparrows who have come to eat the birdfood. Unfortunately our bird food has been rapidly disappearing and he caught the culprit red-handed, or for him the chips are down. I see a sweet chipmonk/my husband sees a thief.

  • What a day! My husband brought me to a restaurant to celebrate my birthday. What I did not know was that he and my friend Julie got their heads together to give me a surprise birthday party. What a great night, I am so blessed.

  • I just want to share something cool that happened today. A few days ago I shared about the 7th grade girl that I had been working with. I go in as a parent volunteer during a sewing segment and the teacher puts me next to kids that need a bit of extra help getting paperwork done, and later getting their projects completed. Sometimes sitting next to a child will focus their attention toward the goal.

I sat next to a girl in full goth regalia, and she had a armband on that said, “How can I ignore you today.” I was able to find a bracelet amidst the dog collar spiked bracelets that I liked and commented positively about it. She was amazed that I was not scared of how she dressed, and I pointed out to her that I have found out that it is not how you are on the outside, but how you are in the inside that matters a lot. She and three of her friends were surprised at my comment, and said that is what I have been trying to tell people.

The next time I saw her she was happy, cooperative and responded well to me. We worked and got a lot done.

Today, she was cold and withdrawn. I prayed as I worked with another child to get him moving along (he too will finish his project for today we got a lot done). So I went up to my little goth girl and asked her if she would wish me a happy birthday, as today is my birthday. She smiled, wished me a happy birthday, and I was able to sit down next to her and get her almost finished, she really will be able to finish the work!

But the cool thing is that on the pillow she is working on she had to sew on up to three letters for initials, she chose SIN, sigh. I prayed about how to turn that around because I obviously couldn’t force her to use letters she didn’t want to use, and I need her to feel loved and accepted as she is, so I started musing outloud. Let’s see, SIN, hmmm, Sweet, Intelligent, Nice, Smart, Sincere, Inventive…. And then she got into the game and came up with a few other positve words for these initials. My prayer is that when she takes this pillow into her room after she finishes it that when she looks at those letters she will remember affirmation and love. I was so psyched when I left the room, and her final comment today was, “this is one of my favorite classes.” You have to realize that a few days ago she hated the class. Oh I pray so much for her that God’s love will come through to her. I did mention that she is in my thoughts and prayers now because I care for her. Her name is Natasha if you want to add her to your prayer list. I will get to work with her one more day, Monday, then the sewing segment is over. So please pray that God keeps guiding what comes out of my mouth. My heart goes out so much to her.

  • Currently I am doing the Beth Moore study Breaking Free: Making Liberty in Christ a Reality in Life. I could only find a picture of the Leader’s Guide, but there is a workbook with a similar cover. This is a tough study for me. Many of you know of my past and can probably imagine why. (Testimony on 3/24/06) And it still is incredible to me that Christ reached through all the walls, barriers, and hatred that I had for Him to touch my heart with love, and sent a wonderful mentor/pastor to help me navigate through some of the minefields.

I sure wish that it was possible to say, now that I am saved everything is wonderful. It is wonderful in the far-reaching aspect of my future in Christ being assured, but there are still the day to day things, and the hurts and pains that don’t just dissipate with salvation. Have you ever been envious of those who have challenges that are not so crushing to you? Challenges that you don’t have to do battle with on an ongoing basis. I am also certain that each and every person can ask the above same question. What seems easy for one is hard for another, and pain is pain is pain is pain. But right now I seem to be battling a bit of depression and a good dose of self-pity, sigh. My teenagers, whom I love dearly, can sometimes make you wonder. My teens have what I would have considered a heavenly life, and yet they complain, hate their life, and it is based on things that I would have thought so trivial (as a teen I was struggling just to live, not commit suicide, and survive massive abuse), being hated for making my teens do their homework, not dropping everything and running to the store for them at a whim, not letting them go someplace, or checking up on them is the worst that they have to face in their lives at home. I am certain pressures at school are tough, peer pressure, the lack of values that is so rampant today, and the demands placed on them there are probably tough ones. It is not an easy world to grow up in.

Right now I am in week 5, Binding up the Brokenhearted, and Beth Moore gave some incredible studies in Day one, She talked about the fact that having your heart broken is an injury in a class all by itself, and says that it is inevitable from time to time that it will happen, and that it is an emotional rite of passage into maturity, but that many individuals are introduced to mature emotions long before they should be – she has that one right there, I was introduced to a broken heart at the age of 8 and it put a huge wedge between me and my perception of God, I decided then that God had abandoned me – I now know He didn’t but it still takes a huge microscope for me to detect God’s hand at that time. I still struggle with why He didn’t do more.

One important point she made is on page 95, “People often contrast the God of the Old Testament with the God of the New Testament. Actually, He’s the same God. Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection from the dead fulfilled the demands of the Law and unleashed the gates of boundless grace, but God has always loved and been compassionate.

She gave several Old Testament references where we had to look at the circumstances  involved in the person’s broken heart, and how God bound them up. Genesis 16:1-13, Genesis 39: 11-23, Ruth 1: 3-18, and 2 Samuel 12:15-25. You may want to check these out.

She then pointed out Psalm 127:3-4 and said how do these verses describe “sons” - it is like arrows in the hand of a warrior. And she pointed out that God had one arrow in his quiver – Jesus. And love reached sacrificially into that quiver and pulled out the solitary arrow to defeat the plans of satan.

What love, what sacrifice, and all who will “lower their veiling shields of unbelief and let the healing arrow penetrate shall be saved.” P.96

On page 98 she concludes day one with a description of the word “bind up” in Isaiah 61:1 where it says, “He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted.” The word is chavash meaning to bind on, wrap around; bind up as a wound, bandage, cover, envelope, enclose, and in our context today it is one of hemorrhaging.

God will minister to his children, Beth says, willingly and lavishly whether the hurt is minimal or unbearable, . He sent Jesus to apply pressure to our badly bleeding hurt hearts with scarred hand. It is an intimate activity of Christ.

This paragraph on page 98 struck me hard. “Let’s conclude our lesson with a last thought on Christ binding up the brokenhearted. Notice the first definition includes the concepts of covering, enveloping, and enclosing. Have you ever noticed that when your heart is broken, you tend to feel exposed and less in control of your emotions? I certainly have, and frankly, I hate losing control of my emotions in front of people! Few things feel more vulnerable than a broken heart. Life’s way of reacting to a crushed heart is to wrap tough sinews of flesh around it and tempt us to promise we’ll never let ourselves get hurt again. That’s not God’s way. Remember, self-made fortresses built to protect our hearts not only keep love from going out, they keep love from coming in. We risk becoming captives in our own protective fortresses. Only God can put the pieces of our hearts back together again, close up all the wounds, and bind them with a porous bandage that protects from infection…but keeps the heart free to inhale and exhale love.

Then she challenges us to..” expose our heart one more time…just to Him. After all, this was what His father sent Him to do. The bow’s stretched back and the Arrow’s ready. But it’s up to you to drop your shield.”

Tomorrow I may share more for it will touch close to home, hearts broken in childhood. sigh.

Boy do these studies touch me deeply, the emotions that I still work hard at controlling, the need to withdraw, the need to hide and not be noticed, the fear that God might change His mind about me, all have their origin in a broken heart. I sure could use God’s healing hand tonight and a lot of prayer.
