Heather steps up on her soapbox:
There are many entries on tolerance that I have come across recently in Xanga, and I thought it might be interesting to look at tolerance from a Christian point of view. From where I sit, tolerance seems to have taken on a bit of a different definition. Below is the dictionary.com definition of tolerence.
1.The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.
Christianity and Judaism have been billed as intolerant because the tennents of Christianity and of Judaism state that we cannot worship any other God but God. That means we cannot accept Allah, Zeus, Isis, the Great Mother, Gaia or any other God but God as our God. To some this seems intolerant, but it is one of the 10 commandments that God gave Moses, and Jesus also gave this commandment as one of the two commandments that we must obey. To claim that other Gods are also God would fly in the face of this commandment.
And Christianity also states very clearly Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
And in John 14:6 Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
For a Christian who believes Jesus, we have to believe what Jesus says, and he clearly without any holds barred says that we must come to God through Jesus. There is no other way.
Now tolerance as the world would want us to show tolerance would be to say that the above statement is in error and that people can get to God and be saved from many different paths. For a Christian that would then be disobeying what Jesus said, and we cannot do that.
There are many different beliefs about God and who God is, and what one must do to attain salvation in whatever form the religions state salvation for them is. Many are contrary to each other. Muslims say that there is no God but Allah, a Christian or Jewish person cannot believe that without disobeying the commandments we are given. We have to choose what we believe. There really is no way to reconcile the differences in the beliefs of many of the religions, so a person makes a choice as to what they believe. To fully believe the choice they make, they must practice ALL the tenents of their faith, not some, not pick and choose what is the most acceptable to them.
Today there seems to be a trend for what I think of as the supermarket religion. I like this statement from this religion, that statement from that religion, and the belief from this religion. I will put it all together, shake it up, and make what seems right to me. Romans 1: 22-25 describes this trend. “Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man–and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen”
Frankly, I tried many beliefs out for 40 years before I came to Christ. Beliefs like “Thou are god.” and stating that there are as many paths to God as there are rays of the sun, and creating my own universe through control of my thoughts, etc. But when you think of it, how many of us are really in charge of even our own bodies? Can I with my mind divide a cell, create blood, tell myself to breath in or breath out 24 hours a day? So much of what my body does is automatic, I am not in control of it, much less how the earth spins around the sun, creating oxygen. I cannot control what another person thinks or does, there is no way to pretend I am God. I cannot create new life from dust, and for that matter, I can’t create the dust to begin to create new life. Who am I kidding when I told myself that I was god and in charge of my own universe?
I want a God that is bigger than my small imaginings. In the Bible there are many stories of how people tried to put God into a box, figure out how He would act. So often God acted in ways that did not make sense to our senses or ways of thinking. If I try to form my own religion, peg God to what is acceptable to me, am I not limiting God? Am I not fooling myself? If I cannot limit God, force Him into a box of my own limited understanding, perhaps I should then CHOOSE to obey what He says and believe what He says.
But the definition of tolerance does not state that we have to BELIEVE and ACCEPT the beliefs of other systems to be true and accurate, just that we have to recognize and respect their beliefs.
I recognize that there are other beliefs besides Christianity, in fact I used to have other beliefs. I also respect a person’s right to choose beliefs contrary to Christianity, and I respect the fact that the people who choose these beliefs believe them with passion and in many cases with much dedication to their beliefs. But, from the experiences I have had, the religions I have studied and practiced, I have to state that for ME I choose to accept Jesus and his statement that it is through Him that we are saved.
We are all given the right to CHOOSE. And I will defend anyone’s right to choose what they will believe, even if I disagree with their choice. But some choices will not be the right ones. And I pray and try to show others what I know from my own experience to be the right choice, but respect their right to disagree with my point of view.
A person may choose not to accept gravity, but if they jump off of a tall building, believing that gravity does not exist, they will soon discover that their belief in the lack of gravity does not make gravity cease working. They will meet with the earth regardless of their belief.
Sometimes people say that Jesus’ statement is harsh, that it isn’t right. I kind of figure that the creator of the universe has a right to pick and choose the rules that we operate under. In this case one way is very merciful for it prevents me from making a mistake and picking the wrong way. If a town has one policeman, one police car, one police uniform, one police badge, it is very hard for a fraud to pretend to be a police man. If a town has many, many policemen, cars, uniforms, badges, etc. then a counterfeit can come in claiming to be a policeman and it is much harder to detect the counterfeit. I think sometimes God makes things simple for us because we can get so lost in complexity.
Today I was listening to the news and there was commentary on how one sect of the Muslim faith was seeking to bomb the Shiites, and destroy them, for their beliefs are not acceptable to the other sect. In my mind that is a remarkable lack of tolerance. And even here in this country intolerance is evident. Every holiday concert at school I notice that the kids can sing songs from every religion but Christianity. A child at my kids’ school had to have her parents threaten to sue the school because she chose to wear a teeshirt with a Christian theme. The principal wanted her to turn it inside out so it would not offend other students, but she called her parents and had it resolved that she had the freedom to wear the shirt. I still see so much prejudice occuring, even after years of equal rights. If our country could truly practice tolerance, we would be a better country, but the concept of tolerance is being misused today.
Christians are martyred more in this day and age and in greater numbers now than ever in the past. I know that men who profess to be Christians have also killed in the name of Christianity. I also know that they will have to answer to God for what they have done. Christians fight among denominations and sects in very vitriolic ways. We are not perfect in our Christian walk, but I shudder to think of what the world would be like if we did not have the basis of Christianity and Judaism, the Ten Commandments and loving one another as the basis of our behavior towards each other. If I am true to my walk in Christianity, my behavior will become more loving and holy. I will make mistakes, I will hurt others, but I have an ideal to strive toward, one that will only serve to make the world a kinder, gentler, and more loving place. I will continue to apologize for mistakes, ask forgiveness, and walk on toward following more in Christ’s footsteps.
I know that to learn to walk in the love that Jesus wants us to walk in is a challenge for us all. I fail daily at it, but I also know that I try very hard to walk in love. The me that you know today is way better than what I was, and I am still a work in progress.
Heather steps down from her soapbox, and wishes all a great day.
In love,
Heather

Lots of good points, thank you. What amazes me most is how “tolerant” (read that endures all things) God is with me. How can I not share at least some “tolerance” hoping it will lead someone to Him.
Christ himself was not tolerant – He said “no man comes to the Father but by Me.” Nuff said.
Great post and well said! I loved reading it! Amen!

We are all given the right to CHOOSE. And I will defend anyone’s right to choose what they will believe, even if I disagree with their choice. But some choices will not be the right ones.
Yep. That right was given by God from the beginning. There are those who would like to see us living in a Christian theocracy, but I don’t see that in the Bible. We are to change lives, individual lives, one-at-a-time in order to build the kingdom. Guess what… Not everybody is going to jump on the bandwagon. Forcing someone to adhere to a certain set of beliefs puts them in bondage. There’s no change internally, no repentance and no Christianity wherever that occurs.
A man convinced against his will
Is of the same opinion still
– Laurence J. Peter
ExDiastrepho, you are so right, God was way more than tolerant with me. In fact He waited 40 years before I could think of changing. Anna, yes, Christ was not tolerant, but he was loving, cared passionately about people, and really wanted to save all that he could.
I think you are right Carlos, but at the same time, whoever is in power in our government has to make sure that Christians also have the freedoms granted others. Too often today the trend is that Christians need to be suppressed in any observance. And our country, if you really examine the documents was founded on Godly principles. And the textbooks today edit out how many of the documents, and people were Christian.
In order to love someone, we have to give them the freedom to choose to love us in return. God gave us that freedom from day one, because being forced to love isn’t really loving a person. God would not force us to accept Him, but I also know it breaks His heart when we refuse to accept his free gift for us.

Inspiring and may I add this little poem………………………………Keep pressing on!
When I say…”I am a Christian”
I’m not shouting “I am saved”
I’m whispering “I was lost”
That is why I chose this way.
When I say…”I am a Christian”
I don’t speak of this with pride.
I’m confessing that I stumble
And need someone to be my guide.
When I say…”I am a Christian”
I’m not trying to be strong.
I’m professing that I’m weak
And pray for strength to carry on.
When I say…”I am a Christian”
I’m not bragging of success.
I’m admitting I have failed
And cannot ever pay the debt.
When I say…”I am a Christian”
I’m not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are all too visible,
But God believes I’m worth it.
When I say…”I am a Christian”
I still feel the sting of pain
I have my share of heartaches
Which is why I speak His name.
When I say…”I am a Christian”
I do not wish to judge.
I have no authority.
I only know I’m loved.

There are only two paths of life before us, God’s way of obedience or the way of rebellion and destruction.
Jesus said, Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it (Matthew 7:13-14). Note: The gate that leads to eternal life is called narrow not because it is difficult to become a Christian, but that there is only one way to live eternally with God and only a few that decide to walk that road. Believing in Jesus is the only way to heaven, because He alone died for our sins (John 1:29, 1 John 2:2) and made us right before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Living His way may not be popular, but it is true and right (John 14:6).
So be encouraged in your walk of faith and Remember, God Loves You And So Do We. *******
A person may choose not to accept gravity, but if they jump off of a tall building, believing that gravity does not exist, they will soon discover that their belief in the lack of gravity does not make gravity cease working.
lol.
GREAT ENTRY HEATHER!!!! I really believe we can have different beliefs and still respect each other (and their beliefs). HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t think I would call God so much tolerant as patient. He sees what’s in the heart and knows the future. He knew you would choose Him.
Yeah that’s tolerance.
yeagrmeister, hope you read further because if you did, you would have read the following:
But the definition of tolerance does not state that we have to BELIEVE and ACCEPT the beliefs of other systems to be true and accurate, just that we have to recognize and respect their beliefs.
I recognize that there are other beliefs besides Christianity, in fact I used to have other beliefs. soapboxes were MADE fer stepping on once in awhile!
yay! oh, and by the way,
“HAPPY INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY, MATEY!”
No you do not have to believe what I believe. But you can respect it. You say you do and yet you say you can’t follow the definition of tolerance because it is disobeying Jesus.
The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.
That is the definition. Recognizing and respecting. Not believing or following it. Do you really believe Jesus doesn’t want you to respect people of other faiths? I think you can follow the definition of tolerance. I think you chose not to.
At this point I think it’s best for you to live in your world and I will live in mine. I have blocked you from my site, please feel free to do the same.
Oh and just so you know. Allah?
It’s the same Gd as you or I worship. Not a different one. It’s the Gd of Abraham and Moses.
yeagrmeistr, I am sorry you feel that I am intolerant, for I think that I am not. I have not said that I do not respect people of other faiths, I respect people, but do not always agree with their point of view. I will not block you from my site. Perhaps one day, when things are not so charged you might see that you are misreading what I have written.
Heather
I like your entry today a lot. Tolerence is respecting other beliefs – not the same as saying it’s all the same as long as you believe something. Can’t we be respectful of other people while saying, “I believe you’ve got it wrong”?
BE blessed!
Steve
We may be intolerant as far as what we expect (or demand) from ourselves with respect to serving our God. But we are not intolerant to the point that we insist that other people believe our way. Even God does not insist that they believe on Him. He let’s them choose. He WANTS them to choose Him and all the blessings that come along with that. But He gives all of us the right to choose.
Christians are expected to recognize and respect every other religion, but no one wants to recognize or respect ours…..
I’ll get back to your soap box in a bit. But for now, RYC;
“not to dump unless there is abuse or threats to one’s life”
What do you mean by “dump”? I wouldn’t expect anyone to stay near enough to be physically harmed.
I appreciate the comment “can work”. EVERYTHING is possible with God!
And AMEN! to your soap box!!!
Great post.
By the way, does your site meter work as a tracker box as well? I have a stalker tracker, but I’m looking to update it…
Great Post. As you can already see, some are just not ready and willing to listen, but they sure want to argue. That is what we need more of today. People standing firmly in the Word of God, speaking truth in love so that we do look different. We will pray that the Lord will open many peoples eyes in these days, so they can know the Way, the Truth and the Life.
God bless you!!!
It is sad too, that Mormons, know the bible and go door to door giving their testimony. It is sad that people look down on Christians and when it comes a time to test… a lot of Christians are not well informed or well read in the bible, the book of God. I, myself, don’t claim to know the bible. I feel the bible is a book that you can never stop learning from. However, I believe as a believer, we should strive to increase our knowledge IN HIM so we are better vessels to reach others in Christ.
I feel we should be able to stand strong and preach the love of Christ as you mentioned in your blog. It is true that we should not be tolerant but at the same time view these people “without knowledge” and don’t know the REAL GOD and we can only pray and hope they come to the truth, the light of the world.
We should be tolerant of evil people instead of being judgemental. We should be tolerant of our loved ones and continue to be a living testimony of ourselves to others so they SEE CHRIST. We are visual examples of Christ.
THANK YOU for stopping you are most welcome to join i have many other teachings you may want to read if you look back thanks you be blessed of GOD
You are a mighty warrior in Christ JESUS rise up like an Eagle with wings and soar to the highest heights. Be all that he has called you to be. He is your strength in weakness. Be blessed filled with joy and peace GOD BLESS YOU! JENNA
Thanks for stopping by my site. You are welcome to come vist and chat often. I love meeting new people through Xanga.
Blessings! ~Margie
Great post.Maybe Christians shouldnt tolerate other religions, because they dont lead to Christ. As you said,we’re to tolerate other religions, but they wont tolerate our belief that Christ is the way the truth and the life.It takes faith in the unseen, and an empty grave. The promise of life eternal, with the Father and Son. Thanks Heather.
Prayer is a priviledge to practice! It is my priviledge to pray for you as you seek knowledge along the path of righteousness, Heather. Questioning along the way, discernement of the information gleaned, and leaning on his everlasting arms while focusing on his face…..priviledged we are as his children….honored to even be in his presence….filled with wonder and hope that He could love me, be so tolerant of me, so as to have sent his son to die in my place…..
God bless your day, Heather, and may he give you strength to handle whatever breeze blows your way today, and whatever ill may be upon it! <3 bette
Great post Heather. Keep on keeping on for the Lord and God bless you……. Cd
Great Post Sister! I really enjoyed it!
Be bless!
Hey heather! I always love your posts! I gain so much knowledge from them…..welp just checking up on you! God bless you….
GREAT comment over at my place! I too am thankful He is obsessed!!
Great post!
I wish more would understand this concept. Tolerance is a difficult word to use within the context of Christianity. As Christians, we love the sinner but hate the sin. we are also to make the attempt to show others the way to our gift of eternal life through Chirst. Tolerance is respecting the individuals within the confines of Christian love, but the Bible clearly states what is not acceptable to gain entry into the kingdom. Although others have different and sometime opposing beliefs, we cross the line when we discriminate against them. We are to show them and tell them the way to Christ, not beat them over the head with a Bible or our own beliefs. Ask for divine guidance and let the Spirit lead you in helping others find the way. Patience, which we all seem to lack, is teh key to winning others to Christ…..
Opps, didn’t mean to start up on this…………..
Again I liked your comment and wish more would read the entire article carefully and not take offense but try to truely understand what you have written…
In Christ,
Steve
Hats off to a very well written post. I am reminded of Paul in 2nd Corinthians saying that he can’t do anything against the truth, only for it. What an incredible place to be …to be so filled with the Holy Spirit that you never doubt that you are correct but no one agreeing with you doesn’t bother you in the least.
The unoffendable heart of Jesus… o/
M-
Ah, me. Anything and everything and everyone is accepted in our great culture/country with one exception…anyone or anything that declares THIS is truth. Pilate asked, “What is truth?” Jesus didn’t answer Pilate directly, but of course earlier said, “I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life…” It ain’t a multiple choice thing!
My as-yet unsaved brother says, “Jack, you are so stinking narrow minded.” And I tactfullyl (not) reply, “You know, it is easy to be narrow minded when you know you are right!” As has already been pointed out, Jesus said wide is the road that leads to destruction, and narrow the path that leads to eternal life, and few there are that find it.”
I’m just glad God through Jesus via the Holy Spirit found me. I certainly wasn’t looking for Him (neither was HE lost…I was!). I’ll let real smart people argue about whether I enllisted or was drafted, all I know is I am currently forgiven, accepted, justified, loved, etc. That is rather cool.
And, as First Jack One Eight says, “Don’t let what you don’t know mess up what (Who) you DO know.”
Taketh care.
Thanx for praying, we are heading out again!
How can Christians say that Jesus is the only way to God?
Print this
Jesus Himself claimed to be God and others recognized Him as Deity. He said, “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30) The Greek language, in which the New Testament was originally written, is explicit. Literally, Jesus said, “I and the Father, we are one.” Jesus also claimed that He was the only way to God: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” (John 14:6) Again, the Greek language is very clear. Jesus used the words ‘the way’ and not ‘a way’.
The question is, can we accept as true what Jesus [God the Son], claimed? The most conclusive evidence establishing the deity of Christ is the historically verifiable resurrection. The apostle Paul wrote that Jesus “was declared with power to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the dead.” (Romans 1:4) If the resurrection of Christ is true, then it is possible and, indeed, logical to believe all His claims and miracles including His assertion of the complete validity of the Old Testament. They would be what one would expect from God.
The primary reason that Jesus is the only way to God is that He forgives sin and offers eternal life, (John 10:28) something that the founder of no other major religion has claimed to do. Think about that!
Every person is separated from a perfect, holy God by sin. According to God’s requirement, either the individual must pay the penalty for sin – death – or he must find someone who is willing and able – who has no sin – to pay the penalty for him. (Hebrews 9:14, 22) Jesus Christ was both able and willing to do this, as demonstrated by His death on the cross. That is why Jesus is the only way to God.
Will you receive Jesus Christ as Savior, and choose to follow Him today? Would you like to know God personally?
WOW! Good soapbox, I must say. Keep standing strong!
It is a lot of work and an awesome time
God is good
Awesome post. People always say Oh u can’t preach Jesus, you can’t do this or that, but we gotta have things shoved in our face all the time for the sake of others?
As per ur comment about one of my posts, Thank you very much,. I hope that God continues to offer you strength and hope in the midst of all ur battles.
God bless you from Isaac.
A lot to think about here. I think I like Carlos’ statement about God giving us freedom from the start. I fear greatly that someday that freedom will be taken away by a well meaning government trying to enforce “God’s” decrees. Good thoughts here.
Tim
Wow! You must have found this very important to speak about. It’s not like you to even pull out a soapbox, let alone step up onto it.
It seems the new defiinition of tolerance is not about respect but about agreement. “If you do not agree with me, you are intollerant.” But the funny thing that non-believers don’t understand about Christianity is that while it’s one of the most exclusive belief systems on the planet, it is the only all-inclusive one. “For God so love the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world would be saved through Him.” John 3:16-17 It is the only faith that says all people are equal in God’s eyes. No other religion puts women or lower class citizens on the same level as men of means. Especially not Islam or Hindu or even Kaballah (I find it fascinating that it is feminist women who are making Kaballah popular when women are not even supposed to be reading their holy works – if only these women really knew what they were promoting). While Allah may literally mean “god”, the god of Muhammed is not the same God as the God of Israel. The same Hebrew word is used for “god” and “God” also, but there is a definite distinction in Scripture that can only be caught with contextual reading.
When I was in college, someone complained about an art exhibit that was placed in the school’s library titled “suicide.” I never saw the “sculpture” because it was taken down almost immediately. Some students had claimed it was racist because the most prominent part was a noose. The art department struck back with an exhibit called “least offensive programming.” They alternately hung perfect rectangles of clear and blackened glass (mirrors) all along the main corridor of the building I most frequented. The point was that the only things people will not be offended by is either themselves or nothing at all. Of course we music students had to make fun of the absurdity of it all – “Oh, I see a zit! I’m so offended!” or “I see a stain on the wall under this pane of glass! I’m so offended!” Still, it was a good message, but I don’t think the complainers got it.
Gosh, I’m sooooo far behind in my reading! This was a wonderful post! Why is it so hard for the world to understand? We are to ‘tolerate’ all other beliefs, but no one has to tolerate ours. If we don’t give up the one bottom-line tenet of our faith – that there is ONE way to God – we are labeled intolerant. Respect for another’s beliefs doesn’t entail abandoning your own. That’s conversion. OK, I’d better stop before I find myownself on that soapbox. Besides, I’m using up good material I could post on my own blog sometimes. LOL!
Well, just one additional thought… I don’t believe that Jesus’ statement, ‘no man comes to the Father but by Me’ is intolerant. He is simply stating a fact. I’ve always felt He was extremely tolerant. He never pushed anyone to follow Him, only invited. If they declined, He didn’t stand there and berate them. He went on about His Father’s business and they went on about theirs.
Have a JESUS-filled day!
