A member named Tony taught the 8/16/05 Bible study. He spoke about the Holy Spirit also known as the Comforter and the Helper.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
The Greek word is paraclete and it means one called alongside to give aid and assistance. If you read the above passage in the Amplified Bible it adds that he comes to dwell on the inside of us.
God lives in us. We have a live in God (The Holy Spirit). He is not a freeloader, he is there to give aid and help, a comforter, a helper. We are not helpless.
We are never without help even in what we consider to be the menial things of life. We can talk with the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit talks back to strengthen us. He will excange our downs for ups, and give us endless strength. We must become GOD INSIDE OF ME FOCUSED. He (the Holy Spirit) is our advocate, and will plead our case. We are in the family business, the family of God our Father.
The Holy Spirit is what helped us to find Jesus.
Galatians says that the same Spirit lives in us that worked through Peter and Paul.
John 3, Jesus had the Spirit of God without measure.
We are members of the Body of Christ, and all the powers of darkness are under our feet.
Speaking in tongues is a doorway into other gifts of the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit, has not been sent to do our praying for us, but to help us to pray.
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
We should expect the Holy Spirit to speak, and listen to His promptings.
The Word of God is the Will of God.
Two preachers, several church members could have opposite points of view, but still could come to agreement in prayer by praying in tongues, for the Holy Spirit would know what we need to pray, even if we have a wrong idea of what we think we want to pray for.
1 Cor. 14: 14-15 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
(Heather’s note, our church teaches that there is a time and a place for tongues, that it must be in order. In our private prayer life, tongues is a way to build us up, to fill our spiritual batteries. At prayer meetings were believers are present tongues are prayed, and with interpretation. We are instructed to pray that God will help us interpret tongues. If it is a Sunday service or unbelievers are present, tongues seldom is prayed for we feel that the soul purpose of church services is to help others to know Christ, to come to salvation, and to learn more about God).
Jeremiah said that God says that He knows the plans He has for us, to build us up. We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit to such a degree that people don’t know where God begins and you end. We are to die to self and the Spirit.
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.
Tony said, “Some like to read the Bible in Greek or Hebrew, I like to read it in the Holy Spirit.”
Heather’s comment, lately I have been paying more attention to the Holy Spirit than I had been in the past. It is sad when you let your attention slip from the Holy Spirit. I truly know that it was the Holy Spirit that put my feet on a path that led to Christ Jesus, and no amount of gratitude to the Holy Spirit is enough gratitude.
Hope you are enjoying your holiday. Jim took the kids fishing and I get something I so seldom have, a few hours of alone time. What a blessing from God.

I had never really spent much time dwelling on all that the Holy Spirit means until this summer and, wow, I was blown away… I did the “Living Beyond Yourself” bible study by Beth Moore– sooo good.
I appreciated the part in your post about how your church handles speaking in tongues. It’s always so controversial.
Be blessed, my Sis!! Seek hard.
Hi Heather,
Thanks for posting this. I come out of a tradition that doesn’t teach tongues at all, so I am in an ongoing study to learn more. I really appreciate you sharing how “tongues” is used (or not used) in different settings. Very interesting.
BE blessed!

wondering04: You left a great comment on my Xanga last week, it was responding to what an impersonal answer to existence leads to. When we had our small group and discussed those questions I read the comment you left at my Xanga to the group. (you wrote of the clock illustration you used while in school). I was glad to read your comment today also. I look forward to getting to know you through what each of us posts and comments. Thanks for initiating this exchange between you and I. Bless you~

Behold, The Bridegroom Cometh!
It’s truly amazing what is happening in our world. Never before has prophecy been more meaningful and pertinent to our daily life. Incredible prophecies are being fulfilled right before our very eyes. What a thrilling time to be alive! You may ask “why are we so excited about this being the end time?” We are excited because all of these Final prophecies whisper Jesus is coming back soon!
The Rapture is when those who love Jesus go with Jesus Christ to heaven in a Twinkling of an eye,and those left behind will be forced to think weird explanations, like the Multitudes of People who disappeared went into a ufo etc.
After the Rapture, the world will be in chaos immediately. Some people will be raptured while driving in their cars, causing the cars to crash. Some people will disappear while working the most important jobs in the country, and once they disappear, cities will be destroyed. Planes will crash, electricity will go out, and phone lines will be jammed for days.If you think THIS sounds bad, the Judgements are much worse. Dont Be Left Behind!

John 1:23
He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
1 John 2:28
And now, little children, abide in him, that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
I agree with your view on love and not seeking to hurt others. But my post was on correcting each other and not condoning sin. Doesn’t the Bible say that if you see your brother sin and you do not correct Him the LORD will hold you guilty. Indeed the way we do that is another issue. We have to judge our motives and to everything with brotherly love. However, love does not mean turning a blind eye to sin. I have wonderful brothers and sisters in Christ who are not afraid to tall me to straigthten up when I need to..
One of the things that is wrong today is that we present Jesus as one who will make our life on earth comfortable and are not willing to let the law expose the sin in us. Mark what the Bible says: the law was made so that it may expose our unrighteousness. We also have to be careful not to overstretch this idea of “legalism”. Living according to the states and commands of God is not legalism but obedience and the fear of the LORD. I am also coming back from a period of completely living for myself and using Jesus as my servant instead of my serving Him. We are called to obey the commandments. It is the Holy Spirit who convicts of sin righteousness and judgmenet so let us stop trying to win over new converts with salesmen techniques. Unless one realises that they are sinners and that it is indeed just because of grace that they can even hope for forgiveness, that they owe it to the LORD to run to Him, seek forgiveness and serve Him with all of their hearts, there is no true repentance. And that is the problem today. There is no true repentance. Indeed, we all have become legalists in another fashion. “Do not brusque their feelings, do no make them feel salvation is difficult, tell the Jesus will give them happiness, joy, peace, but don’t dare tell them that everyone who seeks to live a godly life will be persecuted.” Isn’t that what we do today? Are we really presenting the gospel as it should be presented. Heather, I was delivered from sexual abuse and many things. But I got to a time when these same principles started infiltrating my system. And I had a wrong vision of God. It has taken brokeness and true repentance and it is still taking that for me to seek to even make an attempt to obey God according to His word. The Bible says that if we love Jesus, we will obey his commandments. James says that if we falter even on one of the commandments we are guilty of the whole. Is that what you are referring to when you speak of legalism. Seeking to obey what Jesus asked of those who loved Him? By the way, I would not lose my passion for Christ, just because someone holds different views. I think we all have to look at each other’s stand in the light of the Word of God and not emotions or feelings. I am very happy to hear other people’s views. It is the only way to grow, further our convictions, change, get corrected…. You see, most of what is in the Bible can be very offensive depending on many things. But isn’t it good to know that the Word is Truth? What kind of Christianity are we presenting to people? A comfortable one or one that demands that we be ready to pay the full price of discipleship?
I would like you to define the word legalism for me.
Thanks for the great comment,
Sof
Another thing. Do you mind expounding further on this statement: “Fortunately God is a just judge, and Jesus will be doing the judging. ”
Thanks
